Joe Zuray Checks His Fish Net for King Salmon at Rapids

Fishing for King Salmon on the Yukon River is not for sport. People put up large amounts of the migrating fish that come up the river, some traveling more than a thousand miles to their spawning grounds. Promised you a video of my son Joe checking his King Salmon net after I uploaded the one of him setting his net out (see • How Joe and Sam Set Th... ). The first video shows how simple setting can be for someone who does it a lot. This one here is probably more rewarding and fun to watch.
Note: Been getting a large amount of questions about why the rocks are used to sink the net. Because of new regulations on mesh size our many family nets are now illegal and we are using a net too short to catch much fish, because it only fishes about the top 6' of the water. Eventually we will make a deeper net. Normally rocks are never used like this and they are a lot of trouble every time we check the net. Using the rocks to stretch the net vertically and sink towards the bottom away from currents is the only way we have found to make the short net catch any fish. Stan Zuray
Also "Carry On: Stan Zuray's Journey from Boston Greaser to Alaskan Homesteader" is now available on Amazon in paperback, eBook, and audiobook. Amazon reviews always appreciated. www.amazon.com...
Anyone interested in a signed copy has two options:
- Go to: www.thestanpro... and buy a pre signed book (the simplest)
- Buy a book on Amazon and follow these instructions. (Many have done this and it has worked well. Done hundreds and no mail failures yet).
1. Get two 12.5 x 9.5" priority mail flat rate envelopes at post office.
2. Self-address and put postage on one envelope.
3. Address other one to: Stan Zuray, Box 77172, Tanana, Alaska, 99777 and put book and other envelope in it (folded) and signing instructions if any and I'll sign and return.
Please send no money - my privilege to sign but an Amazon review would be appreciated. Flat rate both ways will cost you under $15.

Aloha Stan, Great to see you and Joey fishing together. Brings back good memories of me and my dad laying and checking nets in my youth. Now illegal to lay nets in my home waters of east Oahu, Hawaiʻi so I had to get rid of all my nets. I gave them away to a fellow Alaskan in Noorvik. All the nets my dad hung the floats and leads himself so they had sentimental value. Best wishes to you and your whole village from Kailua, Hawaiʻi.

Wow, I'm glad to see someone using there brain. Joey has a life vest on,and that shows wisdom. The Yukon is a deep,fast,dangerous river. Big deep powerful river's like that make me nervous. I bet the water temp is still in 50s up there? Have a good one boys, I will say you 2 were easily my favs from Yukon men. The only 2 that I would help or have help me. Joey reminds me of me when I was his age. Hunting is the most important thing going on EVER .

Hey I love watching these clips about you and your dad’s life, from a prairie boy they are interesting. One last thing, I noticed everyone seems to us jet boats to get around. I have heard a lot of great things about “Explorer Industries out of Edmonton” they make River boats right from scratch try While I don’t own one a number of my friends do, and they can’t seem to say enough good things about them. You guys never seem to mention your boat brands, so I wasn’t sure if you liked them or not. Any check them out if someone is looking for a boat.
@stanzuray
@stanzuray 3 года назад
Will do. I use a 22' Alweld semi V 60" wide. Its a very common boat for this section of the river. As you go towards the river mouth people use heavier boats and towards the headwaters they use more flat bottom lighter ones. Bigger river bigger waves - smaller river smaller waves.

A proper net and some ice would be nice.but all those fish are well past there prime.we have native fisheries on the great lakes to most of them are a shit show like this.
@stanzuray
@stanzuray 3 года назад
Not really that bad as we get them in 36 degree mountain water the minute they get back to camp (1/2 mile downriver) and they are processed as soon as they stiffen up. Fresher than anything bought in the best of fish markets.

Our family had 14 nets of all depths and a few years back they made all nets over 7 1/2" mesh illegal. All 14 nets were over that. We agree with the nets size reduction as it helps keep the big ones in the river to spawn but family has little money to replace nets that took many years to accumulate. So we use what we got.

The currents are so severe here you get pulled under easily. Every year we watch big drift logs disappear under water as the currents pull them under in this spot. After so many drownings people wear life vests in this part of the Yukon all the time.
