Ugh, the finale killed me. They may not have ended up together in the traditional sense, but how beautiful that their love was clearly still "it" for them, even after 50 years.
I started the series out, not liking Joel at all. But by the series finale, he had become one of my favorites. He had so much growth, and it was him leaving Midge, that led her to a life of fufillment. This is one of those rare times where I root for a tv couple to reconcile despite infidelity. This is beautiful. You understand their dynamic so well.
He sacrificed his freedom so she could be with her truest love: her career. It feels like when a secondary love interest gives their life to save the protagonist and the primary love interest.
I love them together and I think they always had love for each other but I also loved how the show ended. Midge was meant for something different and she had that.

I have watched, BINGED, on Midge and Joel's love/marriage over 100x- I got a crush on Joel, alias Michael Zegen when he appeared in Boardwalk Empire and after the 1st few episodes of season 1, he won my heart- again. My hubby owes me the soundtrack to THE BEST TV SHOW EVER because he said Midge would never take Joel back and I said, oh you just wait and see...! I love how Joel looks out for her no matter what and how Midge after 3 other marriages STILL hangs out with him- a Romeo and Juliet, sort of, romance! I still get teary-eyed when in the Catskill's Joel gazes at her with his big, sad eyes... Such fine, fine actors...Namaste to other fans. Hugs from Canada. " one more for the road..."

Sure, in season one, he was bad, but he had character development that's the whole point. In fact, they both grow. In the end, he even risked his livelihood and got arrested to protect her money. I'm sick of people hating Joel like he was the same guy throughout the show that he was in season one. When he just wasn't. He learned to be better. And he was in the end.
@@emmabennett7699 She held on to the past as many women do that's why she couldn't move on in a healthy way. Joel was a toxic anchor which kept her love life stagnant. Some women can't let go of toxic men, and the wind up single and alone.
@tia6622 Well, for one, there is nothing wrong with being single for your life. Lots of people do it, and they are happy. But even then, the thing that kept Midges' love life stagnant was her career, not Joel. Sure, she did say she was still in love with Joel before one of her weddings, but she also married many times after that (marrying four times) and it is made clear that her biggest problem in all her relationships, not just her romantic ones is her prioritizing her career above all else. It is made explicitly clear throughout the show that her comedy is her number one priority. So much so that the relationship she has with her kids is damaged by it. Her daughter is frustrated by her and feels the world revolves around Midge. Her son avoided her and didn't tell her about his engagement until she just dropped into the kibbutz he was at with a helicopter. She is also foul mouthed, and has lots of trouble holding her tongue and not knowing when not to cross the line. In ways that are damaging to both herself, I am others. Often, he is going on long rants that she shouldn't be going on. Who's to say that didn't damage her love life? What I'm saying is, Joel isn't the one solely at fault for the problems in Midges life. He was toxic at the beginning, and you can say he wasn't good for her, but the show communicates over and over again that nobody really is. Joel just came the closest.
