00:16 Lulu's Back In Town (Fats Waller) 04:55 Interview with Michael Hawley 07:40 Blackbird (Paul McCartney) 13:15 My Favorite Things (Richard Rogers) EG Conference in Monterey, California May 16, 2015
Joey is so inspiring because he plays for the sheer joy of playing jazz. So many great jazz players exude a weird vibe like "I'm better than you are, listen to this lick!" Joey strips all that bullshit away and plays for the joy it brings in playing and having others enjoy what he does. As unpretentious and pure as it gets.
What gets me.... is how can anyone listen/watch this, and not feel something supernatural happening? Amazing talent/gift from above!! We just need to accept some gifts are not easily explained. This brings me much joy!
After a few weeks I haven't gotten over my amazement at this extreme and original talent. Nothing can explain the Joey phenomenon, but God's own hand. This is nothing short of miraculous. Blackbird is a very original and beautiful rendition of the Beatles classic. I'd want to live longer just to witness how this wondrous talent will grow to be. What more can I say !!!!
Thank God. Finally new videos of Joey. I haven't worn out my favorites of him playing at the Apollo, or the Lincoln Center Jazz Gala, or playing with Sammy Miller, but it is lovely to hear newer music. I just shake my head and know his music is a gift from God. Self taught. Amazing!!!!
+Bedford Acquah Have you heard his version of "It might as well be spring" in 7/4? And he even has a great feel for afro-cuban. That is an area I really hope he gets way into because to me that is the ultimate, as advanced as jazz gets
Oh dear Joey, what did you have done to my heartn'd mind. More than fifteen years I have listen only old and modern classical, mostly vocal, music. I have thought that I had grow out from jazz and now couple weeks I have listened nothing but these files titled by your name.
Greetings all - I couldn't agree more with your kind comments for Joey's astounding song interpretations and talent. The chord structures, impeccable timing, improv note selections, tasteful, flawless with meaningful purpose and intention to move the listener while allowing Joey to express himself in such mesmerizing beautiful fulfilling ways. Only words I can add are spiritual, inspired, hopeful, intoxicating and uplifting etc... Thank you Joey for sharing your music. So glad you are here. You and so many others who share their talents help make this world a much better place. {8')
Joey music an talent is addictive: I have to come to hear some dosis every week and everytime a new video emerge, glad to find he is playing new tunes, all of them well arranged and beatiful. Just amaizing.
Joey is just one of those once in a lifetime geniuses. He is going to change the course of jazz the way Coltrane did, the way Bird did, and Satchmo before that, I don't think he's going to burn out like prodigies often do. He has all the makings of a major force in this music. A game changer.
+Ray Cabarga I agree. One worries w/kids this young, suddenly pressed into so much exposure and sides of the nature of the business that do surely burn out most contenders early on, but there's something about this kid, an intrinsic solidity, and depth, almost unnatural, but there it is...
He's something i've never encountered before. Yet he really is in every other way just a little kid. I had him sign my CD after a concert in my home town and he wrote with slow shaky kid handwriting "To Ray Love Joey" so cute.
this kid is so amazing... every time i heard he's playing,it fells like the music try to tickle my sense... man.. that is crazzy, I really enjoyed Joey ^^ keep in track, I'll always waiting your next performance.
Exactly what I've observed, beautifully put! "Measured old soul". English is not his first language, and yet I'd watch him take in a comment, get all the nuances, and crack up. Extraordinary in a person so young.
Are you talking about the comment about Linda Ronstadt? That was precious! he's so appropriate and kind not to hurt anyones feelings. I'm not the type to put celebrities up on a pedestal but joey is my hero all the way!
lets not talk about the age, the talent or any other gimmicks, just focus on his music, grammy nominated twice as best solo improvisation is a waayyyy beyond imagination
Didn't a wise man once say"be like the children in attitude and simplicity and the realm of the miraculous kingdom will be made manifest in you". No need to wait till he so call 'matures'. It may or may not be better. It doesn't matter. Just enjoy this young spirit now. He plays from the realm of imagination not intellect. The difference is what we hear.
Charming young man, with an apparently miraculous gift. I'm guessing his IQ is off the scale! It beggers belief that he his ear is so good and he has the ability to memorise and improvise with apparently little or no guidance.
Each tune is a different conversation each time he plays. Even if playing the same chart twice its always a different conversation. Grasp and vernacular is engaging amd and masterful, with each nuance is he simply conveys different ideas and stories to capture your ear mind soul into an experience unlike any other. Im a fan
Joey's amazing humility is so lovely. The whole girlfriend Q &A is so cute, since he obviously has no idea what a girlfriend is...good...he's eleven! The story of how he taught himself be ear with one of those electronic toy keyboards and his parents records is jaw-dropping. His father is a very good bassist and he has had classical training, but he mostly taught himself, by ear. He's such an insightful player, for any age. I am a huge fan of him. He's one of my favorite musicians ever and I'm 59. All of his albums and many of his live recordings are available, free, on RU-vid. Not too long ago, four full length CDs, a Christmas EP, and Four concert videos would have cost well over $100.00, now it's all free and disposable. It's now so easy to take such an incredible talent, not only for granted, but as an afterthought.
Where from you find concert videos to buy !? Four CD-albums I bought just when I notice available. Why I bought all his albums just when I found them? Just cause I thought: what my heirs says unless my accounts have no bills of his cd's !?
besides the music, and how humble joey is, what warms my heart is the comments on his videos. I dont see any hateful persons! only people who are in great joy, because of joey!
All the jazz musicians I played with learned their 'chops' playing Bach and the classics. Studying theme and variation etc. Then they can attempt improvisation This young man just walks right in and takes it (In Walked Joe lol)
How he goes from the old jazz style on Lulu's to his next song Blackbird is really amazing. Both performances fantastic and completely different styles. And then my fav things is just gorgeous.........
Joey sent by God so that all human beings are aware of joey is one of His miracles.. thanks God..and thanks Joey.. we Love you Joey from Bali Indonesia..
Oh my god, I just realized we are all gonna watch this little super prodigy grow up here is the beginning of that dreaded middle school awkward stage. Man sure doesn't show up in his playing P.S. Ray Cabarga hit the nail on the head.
actually this confuses me. I have always thought great jazz only comes out through life experiences and who you have been playing with in the bandstand...otherwise you cannot fake it, and it is no more than a technical exercise. i mean he is exceptionally young and yet sounds mature and surely will be the future of jazz. I can tell though he may have listened and connected very well with Monk's music. but he is no imitator, heas his own style, Of course it is great the parents nurtured him early on
Agree and I'm sure that he don't stay with chords he plays these days but to develop something entirely new, which about we have no idea yet, as Charlie Parker or Clifford Brown or Max Roach. By the way, I cann't get that he says "...eleven, almost, close..." wasn't he almost twelve those days May 2015 !?
xin yihao I am just kidding in a good way, meaning that this kid is so talented and bring such a enormous joy for who listen/Watch him that he might as well come from another planet and are using a human disguise. For sure he is human and an extraordinary one. All the best pal.
+Binsar Sitorus Thanks for asking for a comparison with Joey and Beka. Personally I prefer Joey's style of playing. Less frenetic. Beka plays like Coltrane played and I call it "scale work".
+Acacia Koa thanks for your kind comment. .. both are great for jazz for sure... though I share your opinion on Joey... I guess his purity, innocent age contribute to this good feel coming from his music... bravo...
+Binsar Sitorus A gracious good morning Binsar. Joey's music does make me feel good. I continually shake my head at how good he is. I also know that music touches us in different ways and at different times we need to hear different things. It would be so boring if we only listened to one artist or just one song. I'm sure Beka touches others the way Joey resonates with you and me.
What a boring host / interviewer! Sheesh! No wonder he seems like he didn't want to answer him, but he's just incredibly humble and well bred. Let him play his music. woot woot!
He will be beyond anything we can anticipate. He is tremendous, and not quite like regular prodigies. I think he's not going to fade out the way most prodigies do.
Совершенно зрелый, жёсткий и беспощадный по отношению к взрослым музыкантам ... ребёнок. Откуда такое мужское мышление в 13 лет? Этому нельзя научиться, с этим надо родиться!
