This is my favourite Joey trio formation. Dan Chmielinski himself was a child prodigy on bass and Ulysses Owens Jr. was a great supporter and thoughtful drummer.
@@ecaepevolhturt Ulysses is "good"? He rips man, one of the best drummers in the world. But don't get me wrong, Sammy is wonderful, I saw Joey play live with Sammy and Dan a few years back.
ohhhh ah my god the section at 7:29 is such a hip groove, and Joey just ices it with the funkiest asymmetric phrases that made me audibly laugh out loud. my roommates must think I'm insane.
The Cotton Tail vid (and the Newport stuff with Russell Hall) is legendary but I wonder why he's become so modern. The eclipse album is okay but it's very chilled out. When Joey hit the scene and was playing with guys like Sammy, Russell and Dan, the jazz he was playing was fun yet had the intensity of hard-bop. It seems that's he's cooled off a bit (just like all of our modern guys). I hope he plays with some more...EXPRESSIVE and INTENSE drummers (think Art Blakey).
