I legit think this might be Matt LeBlanc's best scene in the whole show. So many different emotions all done so believably. Was he ever better than this?

Joey just has the purest soul.

I know people hate the Joey/Rachel thing but I think it only really got weird when Rachel fell in love with Joey. Matt LeBlanc does a great job here at actually acting like he's in love with Rachel and it feels believable and it's actually good character development for Joey imo. When Rachel falls in love with Joey later, it feels forced and it doesn't actually seem like Rachel's in love with Joey, just like she has a crush on him. And then the relationship ends almost immediately when they return from Barbados so like it's just a huge waste of time

This scene somehow turns a heartbreaking moment into a nice one when they hold each other for a while. Such great acting.

Unpopular opinion: I actually liked the two of them together. He was kind, respectful, and supportive of her. They laughed and had a great time together. I think they (the writers) could have really explored this. Like if Rachel had a work function to go to and Joey gets nervous because "he's not smart enough", but it would be wonderful opportunity to show him being there because it's important to her and trying his best. This was just such a missed opportunity. Then again, I always think that kindness beats out every other quality.

It's so weird seeing Joey fall in love and actually be serious

It took a lot of courage for Joey to confess his feelings to her. He knew there was a very good chance she didn't feel the same way, but he still told her. You have to feel bad for him. To be completely honest, he's too good for her.

This was one of most emotional moments on Friends. I know I’m in the minority, but I loved the Joey/Rachel relationship. Matt and Jennifer had awesome chemistry together. Pity that the writers couldn’t make it last.

The acting in this scene is phenomenal..the little details really make this scene..for instance, when Joey and Rachel hug the first time you can see he's about to put both arms around her but he's also a little hurt and guarded so he pits one arm on the chair..even though he's hurt he's still trying to be supportive. I think Joey was the best friend of the group. It really sucks that out of them all, at the end of the show he was the only one who hadn't found love and moved across country.

Rachel is the only woman Joey have ever loved and been serious about throughout the whole show.

I legit cried the first time I watched this. I know Joey's a bit of a playboy but his feelings with Rachel is different. It's pure and innocent and it's heartbreaking watching it getting turned down.

This to me is the realest scene in friends, and it’s played out beautifully by both Matt and Jen. I was asked out by a childhood friend when we were 19, and I was absolutely shocked. It was unbelievably painful turning him down, knowing I was hurting him. Now at 22 years old, I’ve fallen in love with one of my closest friends, and I have never felt this way before. I just love him, his smile is at the forefront of my mind, all the time, and I don’t believe I’ll ever meet a kinder, more chaotic and stubborn, wonderful person than him. I don’t want to feel this way, and I have never seen such unrequited love portrayed in such an accurate way, just the expressions on his face are so reflective of how it feels; likewise with Jen, the pure agony on her face when it sinks in, trying to figure out how to let him down gently. Being in both shoes is heartbreaking, and this will always be my favourite scene in friends, it really is painful because in both scenarios, you just can’t help how you feel.

I am out of few people's who loved Joey × Rachel more than Ross × Rachel. These two had much more understanding and comfort. Joey treated Rachel so well. And more important Rachel was the only woman joe fell for. And he fell for her when she was pregnant

Definitely one of the most emotional scenes in the series.

Let's not sleep on Jen's acting here. It's brilliant because she plays a more vulnerable and considerate side of Rachel which makes so much sense given her pregnancy and emotions going through her at that point in her life

Has Matt Leblanc received an Emmy for this scene? Because he is OUTSTANDING.

I always cry when I see this scene, when Rachel doesn't reciprocate his love, it's so heartbreaking. I think Joey loved Rachel more than Ross did.

this was always the weirdest storyline on the show.. it kind of ruined their dynamic for me. joey wasn't the kind of character to need a s/o to be happy, he just seems better on his own when portrayed in the show's runtime.

You know, the more I think about it, I think the Rachel x Joey thing COULD'VE worked, if they hadn't introduced it so late. If they did this in season four or five, I think it'd be okay. Honestly, I think they could've been better for each other than Rachel and Ross, only because the older I get, the more I realize that their relationship was kind of toxic. But by season eight, everyone was so invested in Rosschel, that there was no hope for Joey.

Joey was the purest, most truest and genuine, sincere friend out of all of them. Emotionally more mature than any of the characters on the show. Loved him here.

I don't get why everyone hated on this pairing. Season 8 really did a beautiful job putting them together. I think rather than having them be torn apart within the first few episodes of season 9, and they had just kept going with what they had started before, it would have been really, really nice. And Matt and Jennifer did so well together. Their chemistry was very, idk, spiritual in a way. The story was also a lot of growth for both characters (that was undone in the following season).

Oh my, that scene was so touching and superbly performed by Jennifer Aniston & Matt Leblanc. Great actors indeed! One of the best ever in Friends, of course there were a lot. Poor Joey he never really knew how Rachel would respond to his confession but hey he took a chance.

Joey is not immature. Although he seems innocent and sometimes immature too, which he's not. Here... he stopped Rachael right at 'BUT'. He knew there's no BUT in love. Kudos to him for understanding it right there.

People stating that Joey is better for Rachel than Ross , often enough judge Joey's character based on some silly cute things he does alone. In reality Ross is a much better character than Joey. Joey is a womanizer , throughout the show he is accused of sleeping with multiple women and never calling them back , he often sees women as objects just to satisfy his lust and nithing more. Sure, he would be useful at times as a friend but a person's general character is also relevant in deciding whether they can be a partner. Clearly no matter what people say abou the care he shows to Rachel and emma is higly contradictory wuth his attitude and respect towards women, even after proposing to rachel he continued to treat other women as objects which is not a good father figure or even partner. Even otherwise he is quite immature and its difficult to manage a man child. Ross has his own flaws but he is a good person in general, his flaw is his immaturity and complexes , in many occasions be it carol' s wedding , phoebe's bike etc he proved to be an incredibly supportive friend plus he is not a womanizer and a smart educated guy who can impart knowledge to emma . Plus he would be a good father figure , by the end ross also becomes more mature and realizes his flaw . Above all rachel really loved ross, inspite of all his mistakes she was never over him, she was never in love post ross , just going from one man to another in search of mocing on, but be jt Emily's incident , marraige in vegas or emma, she always tried to stay connected with ross which shows she loved him and only him

Everyone says that Joey is just a dim-witted womanizer, who couldn't care less about girls he sleeps with. But we do know that this was the first time he actually fell in love. And regardless of who and what he has been up until this moment, here he displays great emotional maturity in a lot of ways - he tells Rachel outright about his feelings, even though that puts him in a vulnerable position, he openly and fully accepts that she may not feel the same way about him, and he does a very selfless thing by assuring her that she will not lose his friendship - he'll be there for her even though it will really hurt him. I got all kinds of respect and sympathy for him here.

Rachel and Joey would've been more perfect than Ross and Rachel. Ross is too different than Rachel. Joey was there for Rachel, they could've just been together. Ross just doesn't suit Rachel. Ross is way less serious and less emotional than Joey. Joey is actually emotional when it comes to Rachel. Ross just moved on to Emily, even was about to marry her! Joey never did that. Joey even offered to be with Phoebe when he thought she was the pregnant one. Now that's an emotional guy! Ross wasn't emotional when he found out Rachel is pregnant. Ross was pissed. Joey on the other hand was actually mature about it, and decided to be serious about marrying Rachel 😭

This scene is funny but also sad, one of my favorite of the show, I think the storyline between Joey and Rachel was good in season 8 but very forced in season 9, so on season 10 the producers decided to divide the couple after few episodes, right choice.

I'm a fan of both Friends and HIMYM, and have typically seen Friends as the more light-hearted show, since HIMYM can get very realistic and serious about romance and life, much more than friends. However, this confession from Joey was extremely realistic and honestly felt emotional. Great job from Matt LeBlanc.

I’ve been in Rachel’s shoes before is really hard you don’t know what to do or say at that point your so confused. The last thing you want to do is break someone’s heart especially if is someone sweet as Joey but you gotta be honest. Is definitely one of the hardest things that ever happen to me sadly I did not handle it very well I wasn’t wise and strong as Rachel things were sour for the both of us that we haven’t spoken in years. I lost a my Joey💔😔

I am one of the minority that actually love this relationship. I personally felt the chemistry between them and the potential to be in a much healthier relationship. It's also great to see how a play/fuckboy like Joey to be in love with a woman. And Joey actually convinced me that he was deeply sincere, because he fell for her when she wasn't in a good shape. Yeah, she is still pretty and all, but normally, men falls for a single or atleast not a pregnant woman. It was a great character development for Joey. ❤❤

I felt that. This is pretty much exactly what happened, when I confessed my feelings to someone I have been friends with for 4 years. Still didn´t regret it.

They really should've ended it here and instead had them work on how to get past it and continue their friendship on a mutual understanding. I will say though that I do like their bond way more than Ross and Rachel's.
