Johan Santana and Felix Hernandez are two sides of the same coin. Their careers mirror each other in a special way. They’re far and away the two most valuable Venezuelan pitchers in Major League history and their time in the Majors followed an eerily similar arc. Despite their careers overlapping for 8 seasons, they only faced off head-to-head twice. And in their second matchup, they created the most unlikely, improbable, and unimaginable moment in MLB history.

As they said in the last part of the Dorktown doc, unlike A-Rod, Griffey, Ichiro, and Randy, Felix stayed. Edgar Martinez of course also spent his whole career here, but he peaked at a later age (he was 32 in 95), and may not have made as much money if he went to free agency. But we’ll never know.

Mariners fan here, and Felix was an excellent pitcher. His perfect game was an amazing thing to see in person (was there with my Dad), and he was no worse than the second or third best pitcher in the game for a half decade and change. It was unfortunate that he started to get hurt right when we got Nelson Cruz, and the lineup improved. With an average lineup in his prime, Felix probably retires as a 200 game winner. Santana similarly had an incredible peak, and it’s unfortunate that he went one and done on the Hall of Fame ballot. He might deserve to be in. What say you?
@AndThatsBaseball
@AndThatsBaseball 9 месяцев назад
I could see myself voting for either of them, but I understand that they’re prob both gonna miss because they didn’t stick around the league into their thirties
@justinlast2lastharder749

I think Felix gets in. The Perfect Game cemented it. I don't think it will be first ballot or unanimous...but he gets in because of it. That and a few impressive stats like 10 straight seasons of under 4 ERA. The King is the type of Pitcher Old Head types love. The type where in 10 years they can look smart talking about him because being in Seattle hurt his reputation amongst casuals.
@fortynights1513
@fortynights1513 9 месяцев назад
@@AndThatsBaseballThey are both essentially peak players without the longevity. Kind of like Dave Stieb if you’ve watched Jon Bois’ Dorktown documentary on him. From a Mariners fan, I’d argue that Johan Santana should get in if only one of them is to. Either way though, worst case scenario both deserved to be debated by the Baseball Writers, and Santana went one and done.
@fortynights1513
@fortynights1513 9 месяцев назад
@@justinlast2lastharder749Being in Seattle might have caused some to overlook him at times as he never pitched in the playoffs, and with how bad our lineup was from 2010-2014, his record wasn’t as good as it could have been. Regardless, Felix should get 5% of the vote if enough voters wish to go off peak performances.

I've had this take for a while. His stats career wise, and Kofaux, are so similar, its hypocritical to have one in the HOF and the other not.. ERA+ shows they were just as dominate for a similar amount of time, and way.. And looking at their careers, it just makes sense. This isnt me saying Sandy isnt a Hoffer, but Johan Santana had hall of fame chances, that were totally over looked because of his ERA.. Thanks for the video!

Felix will probably get snubbed in Hall voting like santana did, even though he should stay on the ballot. Santana probably had the best 10 year career a pitcher had since Sandy Koufax, and even though it didn't last long, he was hands-down the best pitcher in MLB for 3 years.
@fortynights1513
@fortynights1513 9 месяцев назад
A lot of older voters tend to look at raw, cumulative totals as opposed to peak performance, and as such, Santana probably wouldn’t occur to them. Though the case can be made that Santana belongs, and Felix is at least worthy of making 5% of the vote based on his peak.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the only runs the mariners scored that game… someone should do a video and see if an ace or any pitcher has gotten worse run support over their career with one team as Felix. He should’ve been a 300 game winner, I forget what year, I’m pretty sure it was the year after he won the cy young (and should’ve won it again this year) but he shattered the record for consecutive quality starts of going 7 or more innings while giving up 2 or less runs. I think the record was 13 and he ended up getting something like 18-19.

Felix really should have 2 Cy Young awards in his career. He got robbed, I believe it was in 2014. He had better stats than Kluber and it wasnt close. It felt like the usual popularity contest where the voters couldn't vote for a Mariner. The only excuse they had was Kluber's K's. Felix had a better ERA, ERA+, BB, WHIP, hits allowed, ect. How do you justify giving the other guy the Cy Young, what a joke. The same robbery happened to Verlander with porcello winning, even though Verlander was better.
@bmac4
@bmac4 9 месяцев назад
IMO that year's Cy Young should have gone to Zack Britton. I dont care he only pitched a third of Verlander's or Porcello's innings when he was nearly six times as effective in those innings as a reliever and pitching in high leverage situations all year. (And WAR doesn't tell the full story when that stat is already skewed significantly against relievers) Though among starters I'd still say Verlander got robbed by someone who recorded more wins in a weird vote overall.
