A spiral fracture of the humerus has only happened 5 times in MLB history, and none of the pitchers have ever been the same. Tony Saunders, Dave Dravecky, Tom Browning, John Smiley, and Aaron Barrett had their lives changed by throwing one single pitch.
I did a deep dive to try and find the reason that this injury is so rare and so terrifying.
