I heard this symphony for the first time Friday, June 21, 2019, with the Milwaukee Symphony and now can't stop playing it. The trumpet solos are exquisite beyond words. I even had the honor of meeting John Adams when he came to Milwaukee a few years ago for the premiere of one of his pieces. I first discovered who he even was from the movie Shutter Island and now relish any opportunity to hear his music.

My wife and I were at this concert too! Crazy coincidence. We are listening to the Milwaukee Symphony do another one of his pieces right now - The Dharma at Big Sur

Hope this gets used for the trailer music for the Oppenheimer trailer (when it comes out that is). Has a very cinematic quality.

You read my mind! They didn't, but did you notice how Göransson's score evokes Adams' motifs constantly? I esp thought Trinity, Destroyer of Worlds, and Regret were undeniably taking nods from Adams. Also, if you see the movie, you'll notice some shots take after from the opera itself, including one of an agonizingly anxious Oppenheimer entering the tent with the test bomb, and the fact that Oppenheimer says to Groves, when asked to name the test, "Batter my heart, three-person'd God".

Antes filmó The Death of Klighoffer.

Qué afortunada tu amiga, Danse De Puck!!!

Terrific performance. A thrilling internal journey, lying somewhere between structure and aleatory, which offers a most rewarding and satisfying experience.

Agree 100%. I only wish the actual opera had been as dramatic [heavy sigh]. The libretto was a ball and chain around Maestro Adams' music.

Not really the biggest fan of this piece to be totally honest, but it's nostalgic to listen to this piece having played it before some years ago, but i must say, from around 17:45 to the end is just incredible to me

As with the opera, the only part of this that moves me is “Batter My Heart, Three-Person’d God.” The rest is cacophony: random chaos, unrelated and disorganized dissonances, thrown together without a pattern or rhyme. Adams was better as a minimalist.

@@dogisgreat1 If it’s “highly organized and packed with rhythmic interest,” what meter is the first minute in?

Listen more carefully. I played the opera when I was with the Metropolitan Opera. The music is well crafted and serves the story. I agree though, that “Batter my heart” is the highlight. Gerald Finley sang it magnificently.

Alert readers will notice that , after an entire year, neither @dogisgreat1 nor any other phony has answered my question. It is also worth noting that the successive compositions of John Adams have become worse and worse over the following years. I'd rather listen to the music of Jim Thirlwell than the Violin Concerto of John Adams.

@@KeithOtisEdwards Try listening to the timpani. What "meter" is the first minute of "The Rite of Spring" in?
