Memories of a wonderful 60s childhood listening to a Perdio Popsy radio in the family car on very long journeys!! Far better days!

Growing up in Sri Lanka and only live radio commentary available then he was one of my favourite voices . He once described in a test match in the 70s “Derek underwood bowls a maiden ball to Viv Richards “ 😂when viv was smashing every delivery to all parts of the ground ...

Impossible to disguise a profound love of the game. A truly great man.

The voice of cricket. I'm here rather than listening to the abject radio commentary on the current test match in India.

John Arlot was the voice of my childhood, walking home from school listening on my little radio. It was to me a thing of beauty.

There would be no place in today's cricket for someone like John Arlott, a non-professional cricketer who was a poet with words. Cricket is the poorer for the loss of different voices. Today we are treated to the endless hindsights and 'wisdom' of former professional cricketers turned commentators, many of whom are as inarticulate in front of a microphone as they were talented when out in the middle.

Just a selection of his commentaries and little about his life, listened to the whole thing but disappointing

The sounds of 'British summer' are so dry and dull, it's amazing the game has survived in that country. The 'sounds of summer' in Australia are very different. I appreciate dry English wit as much as anyone else, but I prefer more colour and life in cricket broadcasting.

It's fine, not everyone has any measure of class and humility about them. That's why we in England celebrate hourly the fact you are on the opposite side of the globe.
