Ok, so this is the last installment (for now) in the John Bonham drum lesson series. It's been so much fun to go through and break out Bonham's drumming.
In this lesson, I give you a drum warm up that I have written based around many of the "Bonhamisms" that I've found through listening and studying Bonham's playing. The whole thing takes either 5 or 10 minutes (depending on how long you play each section) and will give you a way to review the Bonham feel while also warming up for your practice session or gig.
Here's the other lessons in this series:
Top 3 John Bonham Drum Beats: www.youtube.co...
Top 3 John Bonham Drum Fills: www.youtube.co...
Top 3 John Bonham Intros: www.youtube.co...
John Bonham Kick Triplets: www.youtube.co...

Stephen, after being with Led Zeppelin for almost 50 years now and having the unbelievable opportunity to have seen them in 71,72,73, and final time 3/5/75 in Dallas this is what I can tell you about John Bonham. John Bonham defied the limitations of what the human body can do and that’s probably why we will never see anyone of his capability ever again, this is why it is imperative that drummers with your talent skill and more importantly your teaching abilities keep these great fills and grooves at the forefront of drumming. Thank you my friend.

Great Bonham warm up. I love that you included Fool In The Rain. I play that every day. I still have trouble with it even though sometimes I can do it all day with no problem. It kicks my butt sometimes for some reason. That's why I have to play it every day. LOL. But I love it!

This lesson is fantastic! I love how it mixes useful practice with pulling from our favorite drummers. Could do a whole series of these. Or maybe practice routines based on specific songs, so you aren't exactly learning a cover song, but the techniques needed to play that song... The glaring one from this video to me would be Good Times Bad Times... Can't play that song until you master those Bonham kick triplets! You got me jazzed to practice this, Stephen!

Agreed, can't get enough of these Bonham lessons! Been working on those bass drum triplets for the Good Times, Bad Times groove, my project this summer, very challenging. Sure would be good to have you break down the best way to get those 3 doubles in a row in on the bass drum at speed! Thanks, Stephen!! Great and fun lesson as always :D
@lanceh4653
@lanceh4653 6 лет назад
Just practice them in a little grove that you make up where it is required to do them. I used to do 16th rather than triplets On a song called "Flight of the Vulture" that my metal band did back in the 80s. Original song and unfortunately no surviving recordings. There where Hi- hat flashes in the beat too, so I couldn't use double base for it. It was on 2, so 2 was on the snare and hat, and e&a3& was on the bass drum so its 4 sixteenths starting on the e of 2 carried to 3. It could just as easily be started on the e of four. There's actually a trickier bit on 4 in the second measure. I still do that rhythm now, because it is a great exercise and I still think it sounds cool. With the Bohnam triplets you have more time so you just have to break that mental paradigm that keeps you from carrying that triplet across to 1
@1596D
@1596D 6 лет назад
Lance H Thanks, Lance H! Sounds interesting, I will try that out. Shame your song 'Flight of the Vulture' isn't available, I would have liked to hear that. I've been practicing along to 'All My Love' (another Led Zeppelin song) and playing the BD triplets in Bonham's groove there, somehow it's easier, but still a challenge. Cheers for the tip, can't wait to try it out! :D
@lanceh4653
@lanceh4653 6 лет назад
I was messing around with the triplets last night and actually found it easier to play a full triplet on one. I think the real challenge is getting the accent on one. Without it, it just kind of feels like you stumbled into it. Yeah it's pretty unfortunate, but I had all the recordings of my early bands stored in a box out in the garage. My wife decided to tidy up and It just looked like a box of old crappy cassettes so she tossed them! For some reason, none of the members had any copies either. I still remember Most of those songs, but probably not every single lick.

I have been playing the Bonham shuffle beat incorrectly! I naturally put TWO ghost notes in the fourth triplet (2nd and 3rd notes of the triplet) which I guess he didn't do. Mine is kind of a hybrid between the Bonham and Rosanna beats. Now I will make the adjustment and have two shuffle beats to mess around with! Thanks for the videos.

That riff that you are showing is the ending part of Rock-N-Roll, correct? All of it is correct, except the bass drum plays 2- 32nd beats at the end. Goes like this... snare and floor tom, mounted tom, then 2 bass drum hits, not one. If you listen to him playing very carefully, you will here it. That's what makes his playing so difficult. Once you can do all of the 2-32nd notes on the bass drum with a 16th note on the hi-hat, then you can do his off=beat 16th note triplets with one hand and 2- bass drum notes, as in the first song, " Good times bad times." He plays his off beat 16th note triplets with his hi=hat and bass drum fills. 2- triplets with the hi-hat and the 2 bass drum notes then the one hit on the snare to complete the triplet riff. If you don't understand what I'm trying to say, I'll play it for you on a video. I know every riff that Bonham plays. Over the years many people have made Bonhams beats, " Only in a cheating fashion" just to make it sound like him, but in fact, they are leaving out many double beats on his bass drum... That's what made him so special...

Most excellent. Especially the fast doubles on bass and fool in the rain exercises. My question is, do you have any pointers/exercises to use to get the left hand/right foot and right hand/left foot in sync with each other?
@StephenTaylorDrums
@StephenTaylorDrums 6 лет назад
brian96597 what do you mean by in sync? Playing in unison?
@brian96597
@brian96597 6 лет назад
Yes. In unison between right hand/left foot and left hand/right foot. I keep trying to practice this and end up in a triplet. Hopefully that makes some sort of sense.
@soccerringettedad
@soccerringettedad 5 лет назад
I know what you mean. Exercise #3 is a b*tch. Took a while to get the right hand/high hat. Still struggling with left snare + base drum. And this is at 50 bpm! My brain wants to drift the right hand to sync with the bass drum and drift the base drum to be on the quarter notes. Getting there by breaking it into pieces - take out the left hand. Also alternating between just feet and all 4 limbs on successive measures helps timing and alleviates the difficulty of "getting started". Still a long way to go...

I don’t have a lot of time to practice which is a bummer. But seeing it broken down an the approach, is huge. You can’t just jump in and start playing like Bonzo. Unless ur a 12 year old virtuoso lol
