SIR, thank you very much for posting this! I had recently viewed a vid of Chris Claremont being interviewed talking about the Dark Pheonix saga, and the original storyline. He mentioned John Byrne's illustration of Jean and Scott near the stream after she had returned to Earth. He also stated that Jim Shooter intervened because she had destroyed a civilization and that there should be consequences for that, so the storyline was changed. I have been wanting to see that illustration and finally have, Claremont praised it and I would agree, wonderful work. Once again, I'm glad I found your vid.

I think Terry Austin complimented John's work the best because Austin stayed true to Byrne's pencil strokes. He did not add or take away too many of John's marks. You are right Eta...Layton is a very underrated inker. He makes other artrist's works look so good!! His ink-work is crisp and pristine.

Byrne hated Laytons ink on his pencils.

I became slowly desappointed about John's work when Austin stopped to ink his work. The details were less good. It was in my opinion the best tandem ever.

That big splash page in the middle of Marvel Team-Up #67 I think Byrne inked himself. Yeah, it's fantastic.

I didn't know about that IH Annual 7 being by Byrne or I would have picked one up around the late 70's as I was trying to collect all things Byrne. I liked Layton too as I was a big Iron Man fan. Usually, back then, it was noted in Overstreet if Byrne did something but the annual doesn't have anything noted. I do have that Team-Up and Feature though.

Fantastic, thanks for sharing. I think it's a pity that so few videos of John Byrne exist - especially with him drawing, but thanks a lot for remeding that!

I like Bob Layton's work although other artists pencils tend to be lost under his inks. Still beautiful; Austin, Dan Green, and Joe Rubinstein are also amazing. - IMOHO.

No one could ink JB like TA. TA brought out the best in Byrne.

I think Layton was to Marvel what Dick Giordano was to DC! Both of their inks made even ok artist's work look so good. I can't forget about Tony De Zuniga's inks as well. May he rest in peace.

great analogy between Layton and Giordano. Layton can do it all from writing, to pencilling to inking....certainly very appreciated compared to Giordano. Glad you enjoyed my artist spotlights.

Great stuff! Thanks for posting. I have the Hulk annual, always was a favorite of mine. I have pretty much everything JB has ever drawn. Check out Johns work on TRIO IDW, His art on that book in particular is some of his best work ever! Looking forward to Triple Helix!!

Bob Layton was good but I find his inking a bit too sparse - but still very effective.

I disagree with you a little on the Inkers. Austin specifically...was one of those guys that made EVERYONE better. I've seen some people ink Byrne and totally spike it. Austin was and is one of the very best. TOTALLY agree with you on byrnes pencils. They recently put out Jim Lees "HUSH" in just pencil form and it's awesome. I wish they'd do that with some of Byrnes work.

indeed...I enjoy seeing the rawness of just pencilling and I would love to see many of the artists that I love from Byrne to Miller, Simonson, etc...pencilling because as much as I love inking and coloring, both take away something as well as adding something.
