I lived in LA for 25 years, and one of my absolute favorite memories was seeing John C. McGinley at lunch one day, and screwing up the guts to introduce myself to him and thank him for "Fat Man and Little Boy," still the best Manhattan Project movie ever filmed. He beamed, and said "You know, I think you and I are the only ones who ever saw that film!" He went on to recount how he'd based his character on an amalgamation of Richard Feynman and a number of other men he'd studied. He was unbelievably gracious and funny, especially since he'd obviously just been surfing or boogie-boarding or something in Santa Monica and was just trying to enjoy his lunch. It's no surprise to me at all that he's so engaging and open here.

Rene objenois ( I butchered his name I'm so sorry to him) was a similar thing. He was happy to talk star trek, but I'm a huge fan of MASH the movie and how it was unique having all the characters talk at once over each other and I've seen the technique only a few times once in jurassic Park the lost world where people are just talking over one another. He said Mash was too one of his favorites it was the intent to capture the moment as it would in a real makeshift hospital and he was replaced by William Christopher. And he said he loved the TV show. Once you spoke about something you share this same idea about its nice. You don't want an autograph, it's just a Frank conversation as two people it's nice

I gotta say, John C. McGinley knew exactly how to phrase why the spinoff/last season of Scrubs wasn't picked up for more than one season. It's not so much the reason but how he phrased it that was impressive: didn't put down anyone - writers, actors, etc. -but stated that barring a Robin Williams-esque actor in the new guard, it wouldn't have survived. And then he elaborated that there could never be another Robin Williams caliber actor on the small screen (which is very likely true). True or not, it was incredibly classy and smart.
@Isayonelove
@Isayonelove 4 года назад
A good example of this is Two and a Half Men in a way. A big ball of energy left the show, a major piece, and they did get someone who could fill that void. Ashton has energy and knows how to fit into a space and for that role specifically is a Robin Williams-esque actor. It did survive surprisingly long after Charlie Sheen departed.

Talk about a story teller, master of the long setup answer. Question is asked at 2:10 about if he has ever said he can do something that he can't. He tells an awesome story and gets to the connecting answer at 9:10. McGinley could read the phone book and have it be a little exciting.

@@TheGuruStud except instead of having the oratory skills of, say, the late Spalding Gray or, the ease and confidence - a mix of humor & intellectual of a John Cleese, fo instance, listening to Kevin Smith give a talk at some college, or wherever gets kind of annoying after a while "yeah, so I was going to go do this thing and my fucking phone rings and it's Prince who tells me he wants me to come down to Paisley Park & do a film about him; and I thought 'what the fuck is he calling me for'? So I thought 'fuck it', I could do this, And then, well, you know, this shit happened and then, fuck, I ate bad Chinese food and thought "fuck, I'll never fucking eat at that fucking place again..." (in other words, he seems to try to come off as some jr. college kid, trying to identify with the audience who he assumes, I guess, is full of a bunch of 22 year-olds who hang out at bars every night and read comic books. Plus, he just has to throw "fuck" in every other sentence he uses, not that I'm any sort of goddamn prude who'd think "oh my god, what a filthy mouthed guy". No, I don't care what anyone says. NOTHING anyone can say or do offends me. I don't have any hang-ups like anyone who would say "that is offensive". Those types are even worse. I just would rather hear someone, use whatever language you want, but at least be loquacious enough to enthrall an audience smart enough to appreciate the talk (like anyone who's seen and enjoyed Monster in a Box or Swimming to Cambodia, both very enthralling even though the feature-length films are just Gray sitting at a table with a glass of water & going on, very comfortable (seemingly, anyway, since there must've been wrong inside for him to have blown his brains out). But I hope you (or anyone else reading) can understand what I'm writing about here and not take it the wrong way. I haven't seen the McGinley interview but I've enjoyed his performances over the years, whether it was merely in some TV show or in a good film. He is, IMO a rather underrated actor, though, to tell the truth, I don't know how well he'd carry a film in which he was the "star", i.e., the lead. But great character/supporting actor!

That was awesome. I think Hollywood is carried on the backs of its great character actors, and John C McGinley is one of the best in these days.

Thank you for interviewing one of my all time favorite actors. I used to dream about Mr. McGinley AS Dr. Cox. He would riff and joke in my dreams and I would wake up laughing every time.

Earned yourself a sub. Good to see an interview done well, two people legitimately having a conversation with each other, and not some false, poorly researched question and answer scenario with direct statements to the camera.

McGinleys regular speaking voice is VERY much like Alan Alda. He could do a perfect Alda with little effort. Man, I love these interviews, just great.

Holy shit, the pole vault story is not only awesome purely by the words, he literally tells the best possible version of it. That drawn out punchline, I'm in tears. He's doing a friggin interview here, yet he's still connecting to and conveying what was the genuine emotion and attitude of that day with as much sincerity as any proper acting role of his.
