Actor John C. McGinley talks about the "Spread the Word to End the Word" campaign, a movement dedicated to ending inappropriate use of the r-word. John also shares his experience with his son, Max, who was born with Down Syndrome.
McGinley stars in the new movie 42, about the rookie season of Hall of Fame baseball player Jackie Robinson. In 1947, Robinson broke baseball's colour barrier, becoming the first African American to play Major League Baseball.

I love finding videos where they talk about something meaningful instead of just the next Hollywood movie. This makes a difference.

'..Get over your stuff dad... I'm here for the duration'.. That nails it. Thanks John for being an amazing example for the rest of us Dads (and Moms).

Yeah, but you can't blame the man from not wanting a pejorative word used in reference with his son.

Love this! And, love John. He is a gentle advocate with a powerful message. 'All Lives Matter' (Karyn Gaffney). Regardless of who you are, you are a part of humanity and you matter and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. So, if any group advocates against a particular word, we should all respect their perspective.

I dont know if you ever read this but....: Thank you mister McGinley... I live my whole life with disableation of related family members... my mother has a paraplegia... i know how discrimination of a beloved person feels. thats part why i decided early to work in health care ( here in germany) specialized for resperisatory disablations and do this ever since. most times at patients homes but also i have shifts at the hospital. so a lot of shifts i had at the hospital scrubs showed us all a good smile on our faces because how well it handels humor, tragedy and drama.

But "retard" means to impede development, it's not meant to be offensive. I'm sorry but you can't just write off descriptive words like that because of your perspective or how they have affected you.

its sad that the word itself doesnt define as "bad" or negative it just makes ppl treat people who have the problems that come with it negatively and not expect as much of them as possible ..idk you cant control words but you can educate ppl on who people are and that they deserve good and fair treatment too

I have a retarded brother. It was due to brain injury. There is no place for the brain injured. As a child i grew uo with a heavy realization. It was never going to be good. My brother will never be amazing. Anyways. It hits harder on the kid thsn the parents. My parents played through it and always just said my brother is challenged but so what.
@blackbird5634
@blackbird5634 4 года назад
We do need to balance some of the negative connotations around the word retarded because for many years it was used not just by mean spirited children and adults, but was considered the medical term for someone with special needs. One heard it from medical professionals who's opinions were sought about the various forms of retardation. Since then, of course more acceptable and socially friendly adjectives have come into use and this is an understandable change in language as times and sensitivities are focused. It's really important to hear Mr. McGinley speak about it and hear his valuable perspective.

I thought his point on derogatory language (though he made it a little abrasively) was right on. If you believe that using derogatory language is wrong, then that's okay. If you disagree - as long as you're making intelligent points and are only speaking for YOUR group, and not for others - that's fine too. Either way, be consistent.

When you deal with something on a regular basis and people have been pretty awful about it it is easy to become angry and frustrated. Reacting to it in a manner others may see as abrasive is perfectly understandable. Just try as he asks to respond to it with compassion and understanding. It will be greatly appreciated.

The crazy thing is I never once considered a person with special needs "retarded." A retarded person is a fool - an idiot. That's how I've always known the word and it couldn't be further away from a person with a disability. But of course I won't use it if it's a hurtful term.

Yeah but calling them something else is still a label. The word doesn't mean anything other than what people want it to mean. The negative connotation comes from the minds of people, not from the word itself. And all people are not equal exactly, that why we live in a democratic society where unlike communism you have to prove your worth, and if someone works hard enough and gets rich and respected, they become a part of upper tier society.

You may want to consider the possibility that blacklisting a derogatory term has a secondary benefit above semantics alone, for example, awareness.

ShootinItPodcast I know right! Why would we want to choose kinder words when talking about the special needs community.
@moralityisnotsubjective5
@moralityisnotsubjective5 6 лет назад
Why indeed would we want to show compassion and kindness to another person when it takes so little effort and is much easier to just be a terrible person, right? /sarcasm He doesn't object because it hurts him. He objects because it hurts someone he LOVES. Has anyone ever hurt anyone you love? Then take how that made you feel and them feel and apply it here. Then remember this in future try to be a little more kind in how you treat others.
