His accent is very american when he speaks Mandarin but he has a pretty impressive vocabulary to be able to form such complete and coherent sentences. Interviewer has his accent pretty good, woulda been fun to see a full chinese interview section haha.
I contemplated a Chinese back and forth, but there is of course the possibility of him not understanding me and then the interview just becoming a lot of awkward silences. Best to let him lead however he wants. He is supremely confident, and has no fear. If he lived in China full time for a year, he'd be conversational in no time.
I've got new respect for John Cena. I was expecting a Vanilla Ice, Mark Wahlberg type. He turned out to be intellectual, motivated, and open minded. His accent is not bad, and very intelligible in Chinese.
I’d say his mandarin speaking skills allows him tap into a huge market and make even more money. If you’re not multilingual, your earnings potential is limited.
@@tomtam8789 Chinese stars who only reside in their chinese market doesnt need to be multilingual... but those who are globally famous, can they dont speak english? That's why there's more chinese superstars than japan does, even korea have more multilingual stars than japan, japan really sucks. Among hollywoods stars, john cena is welcome to china, that's the different.
@@神-n6b Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Donnie Yen, and Sammo Hung all speak fluent english. Bruce Lee had the most impact as he was a US Citizen raised in British controlled Hong Kong.
@@dantegarcia7629 @Dante Garcia nonetheless, the level of commitment from someone who's so busy is very impressive. learning a new language in older age is incredibly difficult ~ i applaud him for his effort 👏
Lol no he didn’t learn to speak like that in just 5 months...he gave a whole speech in Chinese a few years ago to promote WWE so he’s been learning for a long time
Obviously Cena speaks with an accent, obviously his level of understanding is elementary at best, however I think it's notable he actually took the time to ATTEMPT to learn Mandarin, and in the short time he had living in the PRC, especially at his age, honestly learned/retained quite a lot. Many famous American celebrities have spent 6 months on location shooting major movies, and most never even try to learn the language, and most of the stories they tell are tourist bullshit like "In China people notice tall people with blonde hair" what a revelation. I commend Cena for his true honest effort to learn Mandarin. All things considered, he's really done quite well.
Jeezus Elementary?! Ive been studying mandarin for 6weeks and I thought I was at daycare level. So I guess I'm just babbling if he's at elementary because tha right there is years of studying
@1:36 awwww thats so wholesome when he slips back into Mandarin unconsciously. You can tell he genuinely tried very hard to learn as much as possible during his time in China, and he seems so excited to have an arena and captive audience so he can flex his Mandarin muscles a little, and most importantly, it is not because he is egotistical, but because he loves language and sincerely wants people from other cultures to be even more engaged with his performances yet also feel more connected to him as a human. You can see it in the way he harps about the appeal of Bumblebee too, he's so focused on the emotional touch, what hits the viewer's heart. It's really beautiful to see and very inspiring to an aspiring polyglot like myself.
He's known how to speak Mandarin for some time now. In fact, the man is fluent in a few languages. I love how people like to talk crap about him, yet he's quite intelligent and very business savvy. Haters are always gonna hate. He's invested his money well and knows what he's doing. Is he a GREAT wrestler? No. But he did his job for years and has mic skills. There are plenty of mediocre wrestlers that get by on personality alone. I, personally, am not a huge fan, but I will give respect when deserved, and he has mine. Anyone who has given what he's given to his fans, especially the Make-A-Wish foundation/children is pretty remarkable in my book. He will be a Hall of Famer for sure, and absolutely deserves that recognition.
Despite the memes, its really a great thing for a celebrity to learn other languages, especially the most spoken language. Him apologizing isnt really something he can control, China has done that multiple times (to minors even) and we shouldnt place the blame on him.
People don understand how difficult for any non-chinese to learn and master mandarin, from pronunciation to the same pronunciation with different words, with different meaning I give props to Cena, he must have spend a lot of effort to pick up chinese. I m more Impressive how good he is able to speak in Mandarin
eventhough im asian, this language is really difficult than any other language, pronounciation and adverb spesifically. for western people who understand china and able to speak without delaying speak it's amazed asian people.
Wow...quite amazing. To do it at that age, at that point in his career, while I can imagine him being pretty busy as a celebrity. To learn what he has learned in that time and the level where he's at shows he really puts effort in it. I'm impressed. Respect
I can tell he seriously learns the language not the "picking up some Chinese before picking up some Chinese" type. I understand everything and clearly he's making an effort.
Damn man! I wanted to learn why Cena apologized in Chinese (which I thought was a display of weakness) but this video of him actually speaking the language impressed me! I may have to change my opinion of him. Very cool!
superb by John, it's a very difficult language to learn and i'm very envious. Like everything John does, his full commitment and dedication is paying off. Also, very humble.
Im English and i study Chinese, and im definitely not fluent yet im probably at a similar level but maybe a bit higher as i studied for longer, he has a great basic chinese understanding and he has a good confidence especially to go out in public and regularly talk with non English speakers with it, something I am a bit nervous to do myself, I hope i can have his confidence one day as well
Sounds like the exact sane thing my parents would tell me. I have chinese roots, live in singapore and have been learning chinese all my life yet i cant speak any better than john cena, the man himself can.
What is your opinion on the current situation of its John Xena and China with the apology video for referring Taiwan as a country etc. this is only a question feel free to prove me wrong
Stu, I just found this older video of yours, you make a fabulous Hollywood reporter. I mean that. If the Oxford thing don't work out, and who needs Oxford anyways ;-) This is your calling.
Ha, thanks Stephen... Unfortunately I don't think anyone will be getting in touch with me anytime soon to do interviews with them. But thanks for the lovely message.
Globalisation is wonderful... we’re so used to seeing English 2nd language speakers of Asian descent conversing on RU-vid... now mandarin 2nd language speakers of European/American descent are conversing on RU-vid
I really love John Cena's enthusiasm towards living life and loving it in life, learning to tackle the challenges in life and his passion towards learning of a foreign language. Wish I could be like him, whether it is about learning a foreign language or living life full of passion. 他讲的中文虽然有外国人的口音,但是我觉得已经很好了,至少听懂他讲的中文。
He just totally abandoned the whole tone system and used American intonation to speak Mandarin. He looks very confident when he speaks...He makes people think he is right.
@@HawkSlam I assume you're talking about celebrities, not average people, so I would say yes, like Jackie Chan. He speaks fluent English, however, with a thick accent...
Jake Wood I wasn’t actually. Out of the three Chinese friends I have, one speaks fluent English with a mild accent, one speaks pretty good English with a thick accent and the other speaks decent English with a VERY thick accent. I would never criticise them for not imitating an American or British accent when they speak though, so I find it odd that you think John speaking with an American accent makes the Mandarin worse.
Surprise , Surprise! John Cena does speak a bit of Mandarin! By the Way , one of my Malaysian friend told me that , Cina ( Yes , spelt with an i ) is actually a word refering to Chinese in Bahasa Malaysia / Malaysian National Language! Quite a coincidence there! 🌍
So is there a real reason why /r/potatosalad is just John Cena? I was looking to fangirl over my favourite starchy dish, but discovered he's kinda wholesome. If not, very well trained in global PR.
