Great video! Can truly see your desire to pass down some of the more valuable things a bassist can hang onto throughout their career and you are truly inspiring a new generation of young bassists including myself! Thank you John!

Such great videos John. I really resonate with how you approach music. I love how you talk about internalizing into the body and minimal effort for maximum gain. It is very gracious of you to share these lessons. Thank you!!! 🙏

Thanks John. That may be the most important jazz lesson too ! And For jazz soloing on any instrument even. And do it on a bunch of standards too.

Is it possible to ever get a private lesson from you? I don’t care what it costs. You are a legend to me and so was Ray Brown and I would sure cherish a lesson from you. Please let me know mr. Clayton. Thank you!

Do you have suggestions on how best to approach learning all of them.

practice brother......no secret....you get out what you put in.....also use a metronome.....it works!!!

Phillips thats the right idea. So many of these "lessons" tell you "what" you should learn, but then fail to explain "how." But allow me to try to explain. Turn your metronome on 60bpm. Start with C major playing the major scale, playing 7 tones up and back down to 1 then play the 1, 3, 5, 7 (C maj 7) , then start on the "2" or "D" and play 7 tones up and back down, then play the "1, 3, 5, 7" of THAT chord... in this case its (D min 7) D, F, A, C....and continue...get it?

I would say work a note a week, starting with C or F. Everyday slow and as a warm up

Practice each chord through the cycle of 4ths , minor 3rds embedded in a cycle of 4ths * , ascending and descending in semitones and also in whole tones . Have fun . 😊 * C(Eb F# A) F (Ab B D ) Bb etc

when I learn something new, I start by doing it out of time (no metronome). as slowly as I need to. it doesn't ever have to be stressful or difficult because you allow yourself as much time as you need to execute it perfectly. then as it becomes second nature, using a metronome while playing the things you learned will be easier.

John, hi. Thanks for your inspiration. I have developed a keyboard version of your arrangement to Star Spangled Banner (The one for Whitney). I always mention your name when I play it. Am I free to play it in public ? Cheers. Dino.

Sorry to be the voice of dissent but how is that a lesson? “Learn all triads and arpeggios in all keys” is akin to saying “just learn everything and you will be a great musician!”. HOW do we best learn these things? What is the insight here?
