Last week, we sent Knockhill commentator Duncan Vincent along to meet up with double BTCC Champion, John Cleland in his home-town of Galashiels. Cleland, who has operated a Volvo and latterly a Jaguar dealership in the quaint Scottish town throughout his entire BTCC career, spent some time talking about the Super Touring era ahead of the iconic series’ return to Knockhill this weekend - Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th September - for the David Leslie Super Touring Car Festival, supported by EventScotland and Fife Council.
Cleland, never one to mince his words, chats to Duncan about this weekend, the cars he has in his garage and of course we touch upon one of the most talked about moments in British Touring Car history - that clash back in 1992 between Harvey, Soper and Cleland.
Tickets for the event are available online now - subject to pre-booking discounts. Alternatively, tickets will be available at the gate throughout the weekend. Free on-site weekend camping is also available - pre-booking is preferred, and you can also enjoy a Super Touring Car Championship grid walk on Sunday 11th September (only) for an additional £5 - limited numbers and Gold Season pass holders will be granted free access.

As a very young Englishman, that man was my hero growing up. I see a lot of Ash Sutton parallels today, but John will always be my favourite BTCC racer. All of them were legends in a great era.

So glad Cleland's son bought that Vectra as I remember it languishing in a yard at Swindon Cambelt Centre.

Bloody 'ell, he must've been raking it in the mid to late 90s. Had no idea he was running dealerships whilst picking up a manufacturer driver pay packet! Haha

If not for two bits of bad luck, he'd be a four time champion, and well deserved. Always worth the price of any entry ticket. My childhood hero!

I remember being there and watching Steve do what he did, I suspect Vic Lee was really pleased with the outcome as his team owner, well up until he went inside.

Never mind the final round in Silverstone the title was stolen from Cleland, by biased officials, several times that season. Particularly at Knockhill and the first Donington rounds. JC was the peoples champion that season! I remember one of the BMW works drivers, coming to the pit garage after and apologising for the way the title had been stolen. "That is not the way BMW should win a championship".

As an impartial viewer you went for a gap that wasn't there then (at 4:32) tried to push the guy off the track for good measure! Time to get over it, those boys beat you fair and square there..
