When Joh Coltrane played his beautiful music a lot of people could not hear what he was playing. And he was a high energy player when he played up temple music. I talked with John a few times. He was a soft speaking man, and very polite person. He was a kind man. A master of his horn. Many sax players have written and played his jazz licks but John played it CLEAN and very indepth with a master control of his horn. No one yet did it like him and as clean. He was out there. Just think if he would have lived 30 years longer. He was a constant seeker of new Ideas. I first heard him play Good bait in 1958.. I miss Coltrane .. Don't miss the TRane, John that's is jbsaxIII

I always liked how Coltrane and Sonny Rollins held each other in such high regard. Two legendary tenor men. I’ll admit I’m biased moreso towards Coltrane’s music, his tone, his ideas and compositions, but overall I keep thinking if I had to pick my top 3 tenor players, Trane, Wayne Shorter and Sonny. Pretty neat how Trane says here his favourite album was Blue Trane. My third favourite, personally.....after A Love Supreme and Giant Steps, but an awesome album nonetheless.
@stefanofratta7648
@stefanofratta7648 2 года назад
At the time of the interview I think that Giant Steps had been released 3 or 4 months before, and A Love Supreme was recorded at the end of 1964 and released in february 1965. No surprise he didn't mention them, i guess.

Hearing Coltrane's voice feels like hearing Jesus' voice. He felt like such a distant figure to me for so long I almost forget this was a human man who lived his life.
@humanbeing5300
@humanbeing5300 5 месяцев назад
This is an amazing insight, especially for musicians where Coltrane admits he is still learning. He is literally “searching” for the notes that sound correct to himself by experimenting. It proves that musicians that improvise are not really playing exactly what they want to all the time, they are winging it and figuring it out as they go along.

I have to say, it's been a pleasure to hear the sound of this wonderfully beautiful and talented musician He was an amazing human being & he is truly missed ❤️. However, I have to say, I do not appreciate how this interviewer was constantly interrupting John as he was speaking about certain topics. In my personal opinion, the interviewer (Carl-Erik Lindgren) did not display proper interviewing etiquette.

Those players on blue train are genius. Love to hear this on sounds like only a month after giant steps was released. A love supreme and village vanguard recordings in particular I can't imagine that incendiary quartet or quintet with dolphy village recordings wouldn't be highlights too him. It's a such a unique experience to anyone listening to that driving rhythm section. Just chemistry amongst them sounds like a united front to reach and innovate and allow Coltrane to play in a way that transcends so much, with such sincerity, and vulnerability almost.... while in complete command I can't compare it to anything. I listen to spiritual or Chasin the trane, India. Love him with dolphy blues and the abstract truth is one of my favorites, Oliver nelson , "stolen moments" is gorgeous 🙌 it's a masterwork of music. Trane's pinnacle is a masterwork or highlight in humanity to me. Checks all the boxes

John Coltrane just ozed talent. Blue Train is a classic record. I have a Analogue Productions stereo 2 45 rpm and it sounds great. I bought the mono 2 45 rpm Music Matters Jazz on the way in the mail. Secondly i have John Coltrane- Coltrane Jazz 33 rpm Rhino and it sounds very good. Also have a bunch of John Coltrane albums on CD too many to list here.

Interesting that the interviewer opens by putting him on the defensive. Not surprisingly, Professor Coltrane pretty much took a matter of fact approach and irrefutably demonstrated that his vision was so far ahead of the curve that not only was it beyond the general grasp of the interviewer, but continues to set the standard of excellence well into the 21st century. We still are not worthy.
@giusepperesponte8077

The interview wasn’t espousing his own opinion, he was reiterating previous criticisms from other critics, they are not his opinion. He said that in the video.
@MikeBlitzMag
@MikeBlitzMag 3 года назад
@@giusepperesponte8077 Well aware of that. It just seemed like an unusual opener. But putting it into context, that does seem to better address the perceptions of his work that availed themselves in 1960, although it is fair to say that the detractors are most assuredly in the minority in the modern day.

I had the chance to see Elvin Jones with his quartet in a small club in Montréal around 1982. After the first set, I gave hands with him and told him he was reminding me of Coltrane; his answer was « oh he IS a good man!! »…15 years after his departure, Coltrane was still alive in Elvin’s mind and heart!!
