Unmistakeably Coltrane...........regardless if he's playing soprano, alto tenor or a kazu! Brilliant!

That was my first thought: Coltrane sounds like Coltrane either way. It'd be cool to have heard him playing bari too, but jeez I doubt anyone ever recorded THAT eh? haha

Most of these Prestige Gene Ammons dates were more-or-less glorified "jam sessions"; however a common unifying element was the presence of the vastly under-rated pianist Mal Waldron (composer of "Soul Eyes", which was later covered by Trane on his Impulse LP "Coltrane!"), who served as ad hoc arranger and occasional composer (and whose other jazz credentials include the immortal live Five Spot sessions with Eric Dolphy, Booker Little, Richard Davis, and Eddie Blackwell). Also notable is the presence of the remarkable drummer Art Taylor, whom Coltrane later utilized on his historic "Giant Steps" sessions. Add in the fact that the liner notes of the original liner notes of the LP "Groove Blues" indicate that the alto sax that Trane was playing had been borrowed from noted jazz writer Ira Gitler; this may suggest that Trane's horn was "lost" or "stolen" (it is also quite possible that once Paul Quinichette showed up they decided that an alto was more appropriate for the arrangements)...but just remember that this was 1957 or so and Trane may have still been "sick" (if you don't know what that means in jazz parlance, well...). That being said, Trane kills it on alto. And a probable offshoot from these sessions (also look for Gene Ammons "The Big Sound") was the record "Cattin' with Coltrane and Quinichette", one of my first jazz records, purchased in 1976. Mal Waldron again on piano, with the venerable Ed Thigpen on drums (from the Oscar Peterson Trio, his only appearance on Prestige, as far as I know...), and a bassist that I have never heard of since, Julian Euell.

it does actually say so beyond the initial headline, and as the clip starts:. Thats Coltrane, probably the single best Saxophonist to ever pick up a horn, in my opinion anyways. Then theres Wayne Shorter, who, to my mind is almost up there with Coltrane. Pretty cool to hear Jerome RIchardson's flute on this too. To be honest I didn't know much about Richardson, apart from remembering his lil cameo on a STEELY DAN record, knew he was a sax player but never heard much of him, let alone to know that he played flute. Great player!

There is something to be said for that! Coltrane DOES sound great on alto. He maybe is better control than on tenor, perhaps? He also sounds totally, distinctly himself!

I think tranes tone on the alto was better than his tenor tone
@JL-bu8bz
@JL-bu8bz 2 года назад
Yes. Coltrane tenor tone is a shit.
@JL-bu8bz
@JL-bu8bz 2 года назад
For 2 reasons the alto sax sound better them tenor in the Coltrane hands: 1 - for fast players, like Coltrane, the alto sound better and 2 - the Coltrane tenor tone is a shit.
@brockbah2048
@brockbah2048 2 года назад
Nah Brecker proves tenor sounds better faster, and Trane hangs out in the left hand palm keys too much for alto, sounds shrill for me
@drewmfie
@drewmfie Год назад
@@brockbah2048 coleman hawkins? ben webster? illinois jacquet? lester young? in fact when you play very fast you have to sacrifice the fullness of your tone. and anyway "good tone" is subjective so who cares
