John Deere 520 Running The Winco Generator

So we had quite a storm system go through! There wasn't much rain (only about a half inch) but some very high winds downed a lot of trees and caused some damage with power outages throughout the area.
Usually we always run the JD 2355 on the Winco generator but with that on the manure spreader we thought we'd try out the 520. It did well! The 520 put on several hours then until the power outage was fixed.

Good to see the old green iron hard at work. Power outages on the farm is something I don't miss. We had a storm roll through about 30 years ago that had created a wide spread power outage for 4 days. We also had a Winco generator. We always used our John Deere 2040 diesel. For a 40 hp 3 cylinder, it handled the job well. The hardest task was starting one of our 10 hp silo unloaders, the 2040 would just grunt right through it. Sounds like the 520 took the load of your starting your milking system's vacuum pump quite well. This must have been the same storm that went through MN this morning that came from the Dakotas. Yeah those power outages are always a thorn on a farm! So much stuff that needs to be done on schedule! It was the same storm that went through Minnesota and moved across pretty fast, it hit us sometimes after 1 CT. Those 2040s were good tractors!

I only have a small 5kw generator but at least when the power goes I can keep the coffee pot and a few other things running.

No, just when the power was out that day. Usually we have a different tractor on it.

I have 2 520's. I never used my 520's on my Winco generator. I used my bigger tractors. It appears the 520 does nicely for you.

My favorite tractor for the generator is the Fordson Major. Only burns about 2 gallons of diesel an hour on the generator.

I think it's about 35 horsepower or so.

I’m looking into getting a generator head to run off of a tractor. I have neither yet, but I have a question that’s pretty generic that hopefully someone can answer. Take a regular generator you buy at the store for example. When you start the engine, it runs at a constant 3600rpm usually. Until a big load hits it. When a big power demand hits it, it throttles up for a second to keep up with the demand. How would this work on an independent tractor/generator setup? Do you just need a high enough horsepower tractor to where it just lugs for a second then catches up?

On the regular generator you talk about with the engine and the generator head mounted together the engine has a governor that controls the throttle to the engine and is set in such a fashion that it keeps the engine spinning at the correct speed to get the proper cycles out of the generator, 60 hertz. The generator head contains a voltage regulator that controls the output voltage of the generator. It is basically the same set up tith a tractor driven generator head. The tractor engine has a governor built into it as well so that it will keep, within its limitations,a certain rpm determined by the throttle lever position. So once you set the throttle of the tractor so your pto shaft is spinning 540 rpm or 1000 depending on your tractor, the governor of that engine maintains that speed as load changes.

Michigan Farming Oh Yeah! We used to have a JD 5200 (and that was about 45-50 PTO horsepower with a 3 cylinder) and that could barely even run the generator as well as the 520 with the milker going lol
