I was working with my JD 5085 and I pushed the 563 self leveling loader to hard. This is what happened.
I was raking debris out of a pile of top soil. The upper jaw of the grapple was extended out giving the loader 4 feet of extra reach. The extra reach translated into more leverage working against the curl cylinders. When I get the loader put back together I will post a video that shows what I was doing. If I had had the loader in float mode the cylinders probably would not have broken but I am never going to extend the grapple to such an extreme angle again to test out the idea.
I looked up the parts needed the next day.
To rebuild the cylinders it will cost about $1200 just for the parts.
To buy two new replacement cylinders is about $1500. Bummer.

My 4066R just popped the same 2 cylinders on the H180 loader. One of the rods broke in 3 pieces. I was doing just as you described in the video, but with a W. R. Long grapple. Raking large debris from old burn pile to burn again. Lesson learned. Thanks for the video.

I turned my cylinders into spaghetti once. Weird thing to see them twisting around like that

Ouch!!! A few weeks ago, I was pulling some small overgrowth up with my 790 in low range using hooks on my loader when I went to back up and drive away my front left wheel started locking up. Turns out I somehow took 3 teeth off the bevel gear coming out of the differential into the left front final drive. We just finished putting it back together yesterday. You know they won't break down if you don't use them that's part of owning one

1944johndeerel I tend to push my equipment to their limits and I break stuff a lot. In this case it was operator error.

well, those do NOT seem to be the "dark" coated rods they had been using lately. I noticed the went back to shiny surface rods. The rods/cylinders are weaker than the force back dragging can do. they look small for that loader IMHO. BUt, I have ben bigger rods at a 90 and > no break

Formula Firebird The grapple is a Bradco and the rods did bend before they snapped. They are only bent a little. I wiil show them again in part 2.

Robert Hill The broken cylinders were made in Mexico. Many of the JD parts are made in China.

WOW, I just posted a video on how I have been back bladding and have been lucky. Time to stop. I just lost a rear wheel due to a spacer.

buzzsah I watched your video and it was hard to see what was going on when you were back bladeing with the loader bucket. What I did with the tractor in this video was at a more extreme angle and the upper jaw of the grapple was extended out giving the loader 4 feet of extra reach. The extra reach translated into more leverage working against the curl cylinders. When I get the loader put back together I will post a video that shows what I was doing. If I had had the loader in float mode the cylinders probably would not have broken but I am never going to extend the grapple to such an extreme angle again to test out the idea.

mars1952 Sometimes we work them as i they were bigger then they are. I lost a rear wheel the other day due to the spacer lugs snapped. A fun day.

JD are junk! Poor quality machine, with a high-priced tag.

Oh well, they are all high priced, and they all break.
