This video covers basic fluid changes on a John Deere 720 (730). Capacities will vary on other 20 and 30 series two cylinder tractors (520/530, 620/630, 720/730), but the techniques will be the same. Oil change, fixing a leaking oil filter cap, oil bath air filter, first reduction gear, transmission, PTO, PowerTrol (hydraulics), and cooling system (radiator).

I want to thank you for this video. My dad just recently unexpectedly passed away and he told me over the summer that next summer he was going to show me all the maintenance on the tractors. Well that didn’t get to happen.l unfortunately. But I’m fortunate for RU-vid and people like you. I’ve been learning a lot and I feel comfortable doing most of the basic maintenance myself now.

Oops you forgot the power steering. Better make another video 🤣 love your content. So many happy memories of owning operating, maintaining and loving a 1957 720 diesel exactly like yours back in the 70’s and 80’s, with the exception that mine had the 4cylinder pony start which was great in the frigid cold of the upstate N.Y. Winters as long as you ran the pony long enough to keep it from getting loaded up with carbon on you. I also had a 1958 black dash 720 gas row crop at the same time and it was a great old workhorse too. For all around general usefulness and economy those 720’s were hard to beat in my humble opinion and will always be the favorite tractors I ever owned. The 720’s along with the 1966 4020 and 1969 4520 I had As my grandfather always said, Made me feel like I had the world by the butt on a down hill pull. Seeing your content makes me wish I had never listened to those doctors and given up farming for my health. I don’t think I have really been living since I did just existing. I might not have lived as long as I will but I would have lived a better happier more fulfilling life overall that’s for sure.

You didn't show changing the Fuel Filters. Would like too see that too. I just inherited my Dad's 730.

1st stage filter should be replaced every 450 hrs, 2nd stage only at major overhaul. Mine won’t be due for a while. Just open up the housing and replace it, then you’ll need to bleed the system. The last half of our sediment bowl replacement video covers bleeding the system

Really amazing job. You did forget the fuel filters though right? I am asking as I just purchased mine and am following your video. I also put created directions on msword with your pics. I do have a question, my oils were not that good, but ok. My PowRtrol still has a black thick slimey goo that is just a touch to thick to drain out by itself. Shocking to see it in a hydraulic system??? I am thinking of shoving a steam cleaner into the fill hole and letting it heat, pew and puke? What do you think? Did you want the msword doc? You can share it if so. Its handy.

There are two fuel filters, 1st and 2nd stage. The 1st gets replaced every 450 hrs or so. The 2nd typically at major overhaul. Regarding your powertrol, a guy could throw some diesel fuel in there and run your hydraulics, making sure that it gets heated up. It’ll probably require a full tear down as you’ll most likely find that the internal seals are junk. I highly suggest picking up an operators manual, loads of info in them on the maintenance of these old gals

Wondering if you might give me some advice. I have a 58 720 that I need to turn the oil pressure down on. Can you point me in the right direction on what I need to do. Thank you

Is there a gasket that needs to be replaced on the first reduction gear fill cap?
@oakwoodstockfarm7017

There is supposed to be a thin gasket there, mine doesn’t have it but I’ve never had any water get in

So I acquired a 1965 720 gas. It was my wife's grandfather's. I don't know anything about tractors but am handy enough to do the work. Just need pointers. Also where to go and find parts.
@oakwoodstockfarm7017
@oakwoodstockfarm7017 Год назад
This video will show you the basic maintenance, gas model will be same as diesel. A good resource for parts is Lind Bros Tractor, an internet search will bring up their website. Lots of parts and good to deal with
@rudycarlson8245
@rudycarlson8245 Год назад
Also, you can go directly to John Deere make sure though that you give them the serial number of the tractor that way they can track down the correct parts that you need.
