He was splitting the field dividing off point rows to the left from main long passes on the right. He worked the short section and then the long section.

No but it only weighs 2,000 lbs more, uses the same engine and is slightly more powerful. I remember when it came out and I thought wow this looks so much bigger than the last generation, but their spec are just about the same.

A tractor in the 35000 lb range is capable of putting 300-350 hp to the ground without excessive slippage. For an engine that needs to be designed to run at rated power all the time you get better longevity if its running well below maximum hp. VS a semi tractor needing full power only on acceleration and up hills.(Pro Stock tractor pullers get 4500 hp out of that engine for 300 feet,lol) That 619 engine was used in multiple series of tractors as well as forage harvesters, construction machines, and stationary engines for ag and industrial applications. The 8960 had a Cummins engine. At that time 400hp was a large 4wd for the Midwest. Those needing huge went to Big Bud etal.

@@lynwessel2471 to me, horsepower is speed capability, not pulling power. Torque is pulling power. All motors have an rpm that gives maximum torque, without running maximum rpm. I'm understanding your post, and still not totally convinced that that huge displacement motor is necessary, and with proper gearing a smaller motor from a third party with better economy of scale would benefit farmers' wallet. It might be a touch slower, but it will do the work for less cost.

Really no point in debating tractor design from 35 years ago.HP is a rough number for comparison, pounds of drawbar pull is what matters to farmers. Thats why theres the "Nebraska tests", dont need to rely on manufacturers claims. Plenty of tractors available with Cat, Cummins, Mann etc engines if thats what you prefer.

@@lynwessel2471 no, I'm not debating 35 years ago, I'm talking about tractors sold today and in the future. And I'm also not talking about Cat Cummings etc. I'm talking companies with REAL economy of scale, like GM, Ford, and other high volume automakers.
