I wore out our 8850 jd. It was sold in a bad family feud. I'm mostly retired now, but I purchased a restored Tiger lll st 450. 1150 Cummins, Allison automatic. I purchased another 8850 that has a new motor in it, 3 hrs. It will be totally restored after awhile. I've talked to Ron at Big Equipment in Haver, Montana, and hope to have a restored Big Bud. Big G , greenline is making 60ft discs again and it will go great behind either one of them.
What a gorgeous, gargantuan, beast, the sheer power of that big Cat V12 and the wonderful sound it makes at idle or under load it just doesn’t get better than that. Listening to those two old timers describing how it was done they made it sound easy, that was some really inventive engineering skill applied there to get it all slotted in neatly - interesting comment from Bobby about the critical alignment issues being the hardest part of the challenge. Would love to have a go in that on a big sky field and feel that raw power under you. Magic stuff and showcases the incredible inventiveness and can do attitude of American farmers when a bigger tractor is needed.
21 feet per pass and at 14 years old I plowed with a Case (steering arm was outside the 4 cyl motor) pulling a 2 bottom plow. Started about 6pm and go round n round n round till 2am. You could light a cigarette off the cast iron manifold thats how hot the exhaust was. Loved every minute. Im now 65.
@@bigtractorpowerthat John Deere has a very powerful cat Diesel engine power sounds awesome 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
What an awesome tractor. I assume they removed a lot of the electronics that plagues John Deere tractors today. Our family (in the 60's) converted a TD9 International dozer to a Ford 390 V8 for power. I thought that was a puller until this. I am 73 now. Miss those days. Simpler times. Thanks for the video!
@@misterhipster9509. Very True Sir ! ! ! The Environmental Nuts would be figuring how to put a Solar Panel over the Cab. It would take a lot of Solar Panel square feet to equal that Cat.
We greatly appreciate Big Tractor Power attending our Indian Neck 2024 Plow Day. Jason video recorded all day long and kept us plowing until 4:30 pm. Well over 200 acres were plowed. Jason’s work is the best! His knowledge of tractors and farm equipment is so amazing and he has it all stored in his head. Thanks for your great comments about the Copy Cat. I have really enjoyed those about its power to weight ratio. Force times speed is power. 375 pounds of force at one mph equals one HP. 100 pounds of force at 3.75 mph equals one hp. This is why most tractors are built weighing 100 pounds per HP. When you double the speed to 7.5 mph then you only need 50 pounds per HP. Using Powertrain efficiency of 82%, 890 flywheel HP becomes 730 drawbar HP which equates to 36,490 pounds of force. The Copy Cat is well suited for modern day high speed work. Can the powertrain survive and does it have enough cooling capacity? I feel confident issues will surface. It’s just a great toy. We didn’t re-power it to work everyday. Thanks again to Jason and all of you who have commented. Ashton Lewis
A new bigtractorpower vid, a nice Easter Sunday treat. Very cool tractor and what a nice looking field. I've been subbed to this channel for years, I've been around farming/logging and all sorts of heavy eqip for lets just say more over 30 years than I'd like to admit, but I still get as excited for these videos and this kind of stuff as I did when I first climbed on the Case VAC and the 9n probably around 5 or 6 years old. Boy later when we got that Ford 600 I genuinely believed we had really made it big. Anyway just wanted to say how much I enjoy this channel and the great machines. Thank you
Last thing I had with a Caterpillar in it was an '85 International Eagle with an Eaton 13 spd. I swore that thing could pull the earth if you could keep the wheels from breaking loose. I can't imagine the power this beast has...holey moley!
DMI ran theirs at 630hp in freeze thaw. conditions trying to see what broke first on their disc rippers. 10 ,000 hours without issues aside from the 2 speed. So it is a pretty tough power train. As long as they run fast with a lighter load for the hp it'll probably be okay. They would have to weight it to 80,000 lbs+ to actually put 890 hp to the ground .
I worked in 9000 series engineering and the amount of cooling changes for the axles and trans was quite a bit going from the N14 to the 12.5L from the 8970 to the 9400. I can’t imagine the amount of lube changes needed to adequately cool the axles.
Great unit...I do understand why they chose to modify an older JD...a bunch of good reasons including no DEF and no limitations to working on your own tractor! Great job!
I did a lot of work baling there in N.C. when I saw the opening scene of this video I knew right away it was N.C. just under that dark soil is a yellow Baby Sh!t looking wet clay that is acidic and smells nasty. once you break ground tension you sink and ive seen track hoes digging out combines in the wheat harvest. they are always a week away from drought down east N.C.
Happy Easter. You were the first viewer of the video 😁. It was interesting soil. It change texture and consistency going across the field. There were big pivots in the field. Across the road there were potatoes planted. It was my first time filming cotton stubble being plowed. The soil plowed up well. They used the 10X 890 to disk and smooth out the field afterward because it took some good tractor to pull through. It rained the night before and there were a few sticky spots that made the tractor crawl just a little.
Is this up by Roanoke Rapids? I used to work as a life insurance agent and drove all over the Eastern side of the state from the Virginia border to down by Morehead City and Wilmington. It was a crappy job but I got to see a lot of the state driving 8k miles a month.
Jason, thank you very much. For traveling down East in the great state of North Carolina. As usual, another great video from you, my friend. Thank you. ❤❤❤🙂
That John Deere tractor is hugs plowing seeds in the grass sounds awesome blowing black smoke 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
Amazing tractor! I wish you could have visited with those two about their background training to develop such a beast from ground up. I find it hard to believe just a few phone calls provided all the info. to do the conversion. Thank you for bringing this to u-tube.
I spent a lot of time in an 8960 and even at it's stock horse power it was a pulling tractor. Can't imagine what 890 hp would feel like. With that kind of power you wouldn't have to hot rod it or lug it.
Such an awesome, beautiful Iron Horse monster. It would have been really interesting if the owners had been able to show the build of the tractor in a documentary format, with the behind- the -scenes, so to speak, of the detail that went into making this machine.
Hello Mr. Big Tractor Guy. Love your videos. I'm curious as to where/how you find all of the different equipment you find? Also, do you ever get up to the country I farm in. I'm in the South end of the Red River Valley. This area is planted with Wheat, Corn, Soybeans, and Sugar Beets. I'm sure you've seen everything in our area as everything is farmed on quarters, 1/2 sections or in some cases full sections. What is somewhat unique to our area is this is a heavily farmed area so most all fields are dead flat and square/rectangle. Kinda boring. It's not uncommon to see multiple pieces of equipment in the same field. The largest built planters by all the manufacturers are common. Again, just interested in your travels to find all the equipment. CJ
Nice work. It would be interesting to know if the original transmission and drivetrain needed to be modified to handle the additional hp/torque. It seems from the short interview with the guys that no modifications were needed which says alot about JDs engineering.
I gotta get out west of the state and plunder around…im from Floyd co…Prestonsburg area and we had little bitty gardens we plowed with old ralley front tine tillers…we got ahold of a bcs and was in high cotton the dirt would be like flour…i miss ridin on uncles ford gettin off to hook up attachments and diggin taters when time come…that tractor is a beast with that kinda power
I remember being around logging equipment about 10 years ago and a logging crew I was around had a chipper with a Cat C27 V-12 twin turbocharged diesel. This John Deere sounds really good and looks cool. Happy Easter Jason!
Hi Jason, Happy easter Weekend. I was excited to see a detailed Video about this tractor, since a saw it in one of your ploughing videos. It is a really amazing machine. Thanks for this. Best regards from Germany.
Are neighbors haf a Hugh self built tractor they call it bumblebee his name was Bob hunter from prince Edward County picton ontario canada I think it was 1200 hp made from a military payloaders from South America
