On my "new" 1950 John Deere A, it sat for an unknown amount of years, and the history is unknown. This video serves as a tutorial on how to change the engine oil on a John Deere A, but is also applicable to the B and G models. You'll see that mine was bad! Sludge city inside that crankcase.

Thank you for a informative video. For a newly bought tractor without service history it helps a lot not having done this before. 👍👍

Great, I hope this helped. I’ve got some other similar type of videos on my channel that you might find helpful too. What tractor did you acquire?

Just wanted to say thanks for the video. As I get ready to change the oil in my 194 slant dash A for the first time I've watched as many videos as I could find, and yours has been by far the most informative. Keep the videos coming!

I’m glad to hear that! I appreciate the feedback. I hope your oil change goes smoothly and hopefully you don’t have any surprises. I may not have mentioned it in the video, but the oil comes out fast and splashes a lot. I like to lay out a bunch of cardboard and have lots of paper towels on hand and ready.

Better off to take the crankcase oil cover off and hand clean the inside of the tractor and scrape out anything that’s in there around that oil screen it will help in the long run and save a lot more time. Great 👍🏻 video! Keep up the good work 😁

You know them “ A “ Models have a Oil Check plug on the Side near the Belt Pulley. I always open mine and let it run out when filling crank case up.

I bought an 1950 A John Deere and someone else messed up and over tightened it and the stud goes around and around I would gess I will have to get in the crank case and put a new filter housing head on it from looking in the manual you said you dealt with this issue before any other tips that may save time or heart ache

I can't say that I have any particular tips for replacement. It's kind of a pain. I can say that I got my replacement head off of eBay for a very reasonable price.

For what I saw coming out of the drain, I would have run 1/2 diesel and 1/2 oil for about 30 minutes, then change all of it out. Next put about 1/3 Marvel Mystery Oil and oil a new filter,driving around for about an hour. Then putting in the final oil and new filter.

I would have not worn a white shirt, because I ruin them every single time. Are you going use that oil for a bit and then change it again before needed to help get more sludge out?
@TractorHoarders

Yeah, I’ll run it a little bit and change it again. Depending on what comes out, I may flush with diesel again.

Get a Original Owner's Operation Manual. Read it carefully. It covers all the basic, important service points. Quantities and types of oils needed. It also described "flushing" out the trans, engine because condinsation and sludge builds up . This was on new machines! So add decades if neglect and you can imagine the terrible condition that is hiding in there from no servicing. Dont forget greasing and removing front wheel bearings, cleaning and repacking- and greasing the Roll-O- Matic. Make a 10" high wood ramp to drive up with one trike wheel. That will leave the other trike wheel dangling in air for removal and wheel bearing regreasing and adjustment. Stack some 10" wide boards in a pyramid to make a ramp, use long 5" screws to hold all rhe boards together. PS, engine oil capacity is 11 quarts. If you clean the oil level petcock to let it flow better the extra quart would slowly drain out. Next oil change really bend your finger up and around inside that drain hole. You'll be amazed what else you find.

I've noticed that a lot of old A and B owners and a few others have removed the crankcase breather and filter, is this a good idea or does it make any difference? My A came with one and was kinda beat up so I made one out of a car crankcase filter and pipe nipple, painted it JD green and seems to work just fine...was just wondering why folks cap theirs off like yours is. Thanks for the video.
@johndeere1951a
@johndeere1951a Год назад
Older models have a tall breather filler. Later models have that short stubby oil filler cap. The breather is now in the governor housing with a vapor pipe running forward with a pipe connected to the valve cover. Improved positive crank case ventilation

I have a 1957 j.d. 620 / I bought from an auction, after paying the tow guy 350 dollars .I was anxious to start soaking the stuck pistons and maybe valves. But the oil that got thru past the rings. Came out the oil filter green cast oil filter cap u mentioned don't over tighten. Now I found out why it was parked for all those years. the previous owner over tightened it an seems very difficult to change that 2 piece stud thing so he left it sit. I just got it in the garage today to work on it. I think I'll tear it all the way down so there is a big opening with the block removed . does that sound dumb how did you replace the stripped stud for the oil filter?
@johndeere1951a
@johndeere1951a Год назад
The filter stud is part of the canister pressed up into the block. Watch a great British channel of a farmer restoring a B with wide front. His name is David, a sheep farmer in England. He has many detailed episodes on the complete restoration including explaining the oil filter canister with that cap stud. If you haven't already discovered the nightmare that awaits you, hold on for some bad news. Caution to all 2 cylinder owners, ‼️⚠️ Do Not Over tighten the oil filter cap bolt⚠️‼️always use a new rubber o-ring

I recently acquired a jd 70 diesel and cannot find an oil filter anywhere. Would you just go through John Deere to get one or do you know of anywhere else before?
@TractorHoarders
@TractorHoarders 2 года назад
Personally I’d go with John Deere or NAPA. The NAPA part number is 1242. I’ve had good experience with the NAPA Gold series filters and they come with the rubber O-ring. Sometimes John Deere sells the O-ring separate.
