Thanks so much. People get intimidated by larger machines especially and I want people to know they can use a few hand tools they already have even on a $10,000 zero turn. Even though I'm moving to an inside shop space I will still make at least 1 video outside in the yard with reg hand tools to remind people. Thanks for taking the time to comment

Great video my drive belt came off yesterday. My John Deere is E-140, just 1 year old. Have cut about 20 times with it worked perfect. Its a pain to get that belt off like you said. I think John Deere makes hard for the regular person to fix it. Thanks for the great video, really good info.

these cheaper model deeres are still a great mower,you can easily get 20 years of service from one of them if you take care of it and do oil changes and keep everything greased,these drive belts are easy to change compared to other model of john deere models like the lt and lx series

make sure the carb is pointing up so you don't flood it with oil and make sure whatever you hold it up with is sturdy.. don't let it roll over completely as you could break the steering wheel or hood.. won't hurt the motor or anything and lastly make sure you have the strength.. they are not very heavy to me but I was a weight lifter and a bouncer for many years.. I am glad whenever I hear I gave an idea to someone.. glad you stopped by and took the time to comment.

100% right on Munky Wrench here at Eliminator Performance we have flipped a few riders on their side (oil dipstick down as you noted) without issue just to make the repair easier and quicker thus costing the customer less. The only things that we do prior to this is remove the battery (to avoid acid spillage). Additionally, we have an I beam in the shop and can hoist riders straight up again battery removed and possibly draining the fuel prior to the lift.

I added a lift winch in my garage a couple years ago. Bought it @ har or freight. Added extra supports to th rafters. When I want to use it..I'll use an uprite 4x6 post..acouple feet behind th winch for added support n safety..then remove it Come up with th overhead winch idea about 5 yrs ago to actually to help maintenance th mower deck with easier cleaning n blade sharpening👍

Some advise you maybe thinking about for your futures shop. Reinforce the studs in the center of the shop to mount a cross beam up high. From that beam you can mount a chain hoist or an electric winch. Being able to pull up the front or rear of a machine will make working on the underside of a mower or heavy heavy objects will be a huge benefit in ways you cannot yet imagine.

I have shown it in a few videos over the years.. i just lift it from one side with brute strength and I put a yard chair under the steering wheel to keep it from falling over.. I should build a proper stand but in 30 years I have never had one fall or break the chair.. I can still make you a specific video if you like.. let me know I will make it tomorrow for you thanks for taking the time to comment

Another useful video. For viewers and readers, the steering can be reset to straight from the top after removing the Deer badge -- remove bolt and reset wheel in splines accordingly. I'd like to get your opinion on starting a mower with full throttle. Seems the entire industry is going toward the Choke being at full throttle plus an extra nudge, whereas years ago the choke was a separate lever. Q: Will this full throttle start eventually create a problem? Also is it worth it to rig up a separate choke cable? I'm looking into this 2nd question but haven't quite figured out the linkage at the carburetor. Thanks!
@waynestefinashen239
@waynestefinashen239 9 месяцев назад
There are a lot of good videos on riding mower linkage on YT and we have seen many no starts simply because the throttle cable had slipped and was not totally closing the choke plate so cold starts just would not happen. Nothing wrong with this system and no need to install a separate choke cable just set the throttle cable properly.

So, mine makes noise when going forward and barely moves in reverse.....drive belt perhaps?
@MunkyWrench
@MunkyWrench 12 дней назад
if its making noise.. chances are its a pulley.. the nylon pulleys get worn out and dirt gets into the bearings.. i don't recommend the following but this is what I would do.. remove your cutting deck completely from the mower and jack up the rear end.. make sure its stable.. turn on the machine and have someone press the pedal to make the wheels move while you try to pinpoint the noise.. but your safety is number one priority so do that at your own risk.. if you have it turned on its side and you remove the belt completely you can spin each pulley by hand.. they should spin freely if they make noise or are harder to spin than the others you can replace.. they are cheap usually under $10 .. check the belt of course it could be worn out and if a pulley is bad it can damage the belt so its good to replace it and keep old belt for emergency.. hope this info helps .. let me know how it turns out

Hey , I have a D105. It won’t move. Dropped the deck. The drive belt is a bit loose, how loose is too loose? The fact that it doesn’t drive is probably answering my own question?
@MunkyWrench
@MunkyWrench 4 дня назад
Yeah part of belts wearing out is them getting thinner and stretching.. check to make sure its on all the pulleys and the pulleys turn .. the belt should not be tight but only slightly loose in the neutral position so it tightens well when pressure is put on it.. hope that helped.. thanks for commenting and subscribing it really helps and if you need me you know where to find me.. see you soon

@MunkyWrench
@MunkyWrench 4 дня назад
@colinhowlett1 I would start by removing the belt and spinning the pulley in question by hand.. I'm nit sure which model you have so it's hard for me to know for sure.. spin all the pulleys and make sure they are spinning free and not making any grinding sounds . Let me know what u find

Similar routine for belt on gear drive models?
@MunkyWrench
@MunkyWrench 2 месяца назад
Yes they are all BASICALLY the same.. slight differences between makes and models but basically the same.. if you look at the motor and the rear drive pulley you can usually figure out how the belt is routed.. the small pulley will give you a clue also .. look at each pulley and see if it has a flat face where the belt rides or a v.. and you will know if the v part of the belt ( inside) or the flat part of the belt (outside ) goes on that particular pulley and you can figure it out.. the worst bit is when you have a model that you have to remove the steering rod.. hope this helped.. thanks for watching

I have a JD LA145 mower. Issue won’t pull me up the hill and burning rubber smell and smoke coming from the front under the engine. My wife weighs 100lbs less than me and it pulls her up the but slow. I replaced a well worn drive belt, ensured no yard debris in the way of brake movement. The drive rotates but the belt doesn’t with me on it…I assume that’s the reason for the smell and smoke The belt seems tight when brake is not engaged. Is there a way to tighten the belt or any other suggestions?
@MunkyWrench
@MunkyWrench Месяц назад
My first thought is the drive belt is stretched and worn out.. the belt looses circumference or thickness as well as being stretched out over time .. if it pulls her slowly and the added weight won't let it pull you it could be lots of things however smelling burnt rubber usually means the belt is slipping on the pulley,, I would check the belt and all the pulleys underneath which could be nylon.. the drive pulley is metal so just check it for nicks or bumps.. hope this helps

Is my new trans belt supposed to be turning when the parking brake is engaged? It drives fine with power so I dont think it is loose. Maybe too tight? Its the right size.
@MunkyWrench
@MunkyWrench 13 дней назад
yes the belt is always spinning the trans pulley and fairly tight.. when you press the pedal to make it go it is simply attached to a rod and lever on the trans.. there is very little movement on that lever that increases or decreses the pressure in the pump to make it move.. when its in the resting position there is no pressure running through the pump .. I don't even use the break on my machines unless im on a hill .. the brake locks the wheel but has nothing to do with the drive system.. the belt is always spinning.. I obviously can't see your machine so this is just advice.. I hope this helps

I'm on my 2nd John Deere. First was an LT133 and now an E120. 1. They make it difficult to change the drive belt. 2. Why can't they use a belt tensioner instead of fixed guide wheels? Is there a retofit for this problem?
@MunkyWrench

It's a bad design across the board.. that's just one of the many reason I stopped liking Deere in the 90's .. unfortunately there is no way to change or retrofit the design. once you have done it a couple 3 times it gets easy.. I wouldn't own a Deere anymore.. but that's just me. Hope the video helps make it easier Thanks for watching

How do you remove the driving Shaft rod that holds the steering wheel on John deer riding mower
@MunkyWrench
@MunkyWrench 24 дня назад
most are more simple than they look although each can be a lil different. if your removing it completely you will need to remove the cutting deck so u can feed it out the bottom once its unbolted.. .. using a jack wont get it high enough so if you have a winch you can attach to the ceiling of your garage or a tree outside hoist it up.. or lay it on its side like I do but be careful you don't hurt yourself or the machine. you remove the steering wheel.. on the face where a car air bag would be is a cover you pry up with a screwdriver.. expose the nut and remove.. pull wheel straight up.. rock it or wobble if you have to or hit gently with a rubber mallet .. under the floor is usually something holding it on which has 2 to 4 bolts.. the bottom of the shaft will have a gear on it so mark it with a sharpie or something that wont wear off so when you put it back in you will be in the same spot.. mark the gear on the shaft AND the gear it connects to before removing so you know how it goes back on and be aware that your front wheels face the same direction as when you took it off.. the bolts for the steering column are sometimes under the entire frame between the machine and the cutting deck and sometimes on top of the frame under the battery box on the floor.. but they all work the same and once you locate the bolts it should be easy.. if you need more help just message or email me.. thanks for subscribing, thanks for watching

At my age, I didn't want to risk my back flipping mine on its side. I used a wooden A frame with a ratchet hoist to stand it nearly up on end. I made the mistake of belt dressing on the belts and they don't grip well anymore (two new belts). In order to make them grip again, I remove the battery while engine is running, push pedal down in neutral and squirt the spinning belts with gas. All of a sudden they grip tight again. I have to do that every time I cut the grass now. I thought belt dressing was a supposed to be a good thing.
@MunkyWrench
@MunkyWrench Месяц назад
I understand about being dangerous to flip them up by hand.. I'm actually about to set up a winch to pull them up straight by the front . I just like to shoe people they can do things without special tools sometimes.. I'm 50 yrs old and in my experience using belt conditioner on older dry belts on a car can bring new life and make them last longer. But for me only on a serpentine belt or say an alternator belt. Something without a lot of pressure that can slip without notice.. on tractor belts they do all the work with lots of pressure so it just makes them slip.. when u spray with gas you take the outer film of oil off temporarily but that conditioner has soaked through the belt causing it to continue. I'd say keep doing what your doing until u can change those bekts.. no Conditioner and save the current ones as emergency back ups

Is. There. A. Way. To. Tighten. A. Drive. Belt
@MunkyWrench
@MunkyWrench Месяц назад
Sometimes a spring will get worn out and not hold the belt as tight as it should but 99% of the time.. the belt gets worn out.. it looses thickness as well as gets stretched and that's why it is loose..
