Fixed the engine vibration on the John Deere Model G that we picked up previously. Someone put the flywheel on wrong. But its fixed now and runs nice and smooth.
back in 1965 l bought my first tractor a 44 A l was only 14 and saved my money to buy this A at idle it jumped up and down like crazy!! took it to an old JDman down the road and he showed me how to time the belt pulley and flywheel!!! later on he helped me overhaul it and the bill was 48 dallors!!! rings ans valve job!!! l be watchin!!
Been chasing a vibration on my G. Can't figure it out for the life of me right now. I even had what I consider a subject matter expert come out and we looked over everything and can't figure it out. Everything is timed and installed right. Guess it will just present itself at some point if it's a problem. Nice looking G you have. To have the flywheel off means no one timed it after it was installed, otherwise the "L.H. Impulse" mark would be way off, or they misunderstood it. Glad it was an easy fix for you.
You read my mind. There is no way they could have timed the magneto (or distributor, in this case) with the flywheel oriented like that. They obviously removed the flywheel after it was already timed, and then reinstalled it incorrectly.
I’ve got the same issue with my 38 G. The original timing marks are all gone but with the left hand cylinder at TDC compression the counter weight of the flywheel is to the rear and the clutch drive disc weight is forward which from what I could tell was correct. But it shakes a lot at idle. The clutch drive disc was loose on the crank and there’s to much crankshaft end play so I’m not sure if that could cause it or not. I’m going to remedy those issues and see what I got then. But from reading some comments it sounds like I should check the magneto timing to
@@kyleszychlinski4034 I took my flywheel of to replace the oil seal again. I put the flywheel back on and it is not perfect but way better. Like I thought, must just be how it is sitting on the flywheel for mine.
We had an A that had that vibration BAD. We found that the fly wheel and crankshaft had worn out slots and it allowed the balance be off along with timing of magneto be off. Changed crankshaft and it fixed the problem. I can of liked the way it ran before the change. It made the tractor idle like a hit and miss engine.
Glad you got the vibration issue resolved. You’re right, a lot of people don’t pay attention to what they’re doing when it comes to these old tractors. That’s a great running G!
Can you tell me how to adjust flywheel end play that’s out of spec, or do a video on this? My JD H measures at .022, when spec is .005-.010. Should I be concerned about this? Thanks for advice.
I'm not an expert, but I believe you use a dial indicator to check what the freeplay is. Then you adjust flywheel freeplay by loosening the flywheel bolts and pushing the flywheel onto the crankshaft farther. Then tighten down the bolts to lock the flywheel in place.
Yeah, it's unfortunate it was our of balance. And there is no way to know how long it ran like that. If we ever dig into the engine on this tractor then we'll see how much wear there is. And I hope there isn't any damage to the crankshaft. We could check with our machinist and maybe he could magna flux the crank to see if there are any fatigue cracks forming.
