Freshly restored johndeere m first time hooked to a sled in the 3000 -3200 class placed third out of 10 tractors at 227 and some change . All stock tractor
The "Popping Johnny" sound. These are 2 cyl. Bore and stroke 4" each. The firing order causes the sound. Cyl 1 fires, 180 degrees later, cyl 2 fires, and then is runs on the flywheel for 540 degrees, repeated. Each "putt" is actually the sound of both cylinders firing. I'm guessing they made the cylinders 180 degree out, is to limit crankcase breathing on a dusty field.
I grew up on farmall's so never was around popping johnny's. One thing I've always wanted to ask is if yall use wide open throttle???? They always sound like they are idling whether its sitting still, going around the yard, or pulling a heavy load. I have a 1953 Farmall Super A I restored just for fun and seasonal work that arises ( fallen trees ect).. Glad I discovered this John Deere M it would make a great companion for my Farmall. ) I have a couple JD garden tractors. " Mighty mouse" is the 1983 JD 318 and " Big John" is my X485 Super Garden Tractor. Im glad i found your videos to inspire my next project. Thanks for the inspiration :) BTW if your not familiar with the JD 318 and the X400-X700 series Garden Tractors I suggest you do. The 318 ended production in early in 1992 and the throw away mower system began. The 318 was pretty much a real tractor....shaft drive, 3 point hitch compatible, loader options, and could pull a plow. I mostly use the front blade on mine and use it as a little bull dozer lol. Its amazing what the little beast can do! So much more than a lawn mower...they were mini utility tractors. I guess JD had to do away with machines that last 35 years.' The X400 series was relabeled the X700 series. NO change at all just the numbers. Gotta love JD huh??? LOL. So my X485 is now a X720. Anyhow they are JD's last real garden tractors. Large wide frame, 3 point hitch compatible, loader compatible, hydraulics, and can take about any implement you throw on it. 62 Inch mowing deck is even shaft driven. Man its so hard to explain to people that the JD they see in Home Depot isn't a REAL John Deere. Then at the dealer they just call it expensive green paint. NO....your paying for the upgrades that decide whether your green mower lasts 5 years or 36 years like my 318.
JohnnyRebKy Hello, thanks for commenting and yes pretty much all deeres get run wide open most of the big two cylinders run 975 rpm max but the variey a bit. My M is rated at 1650 rpm max but it makes peak power from my experience on the dyno around 1400 rpm or so.
The M30 crankshaft was 180 degrees out, to limit crankcase breathing. ( Unlike 2 cylinder motorcycles) So the exhaust putt you hear is 1 cylinder firing, followed immediately by the other, to make 1 putt. Then it relied on the flywheel to coast for the next few strokes until the next 2 power strokes.
