This John Deere film from 1961 "Men, Ideas and Tractors" shows how new tractors are designed, built, and tested before being approved for mass manufacturing. The design and early manufacturing stages occur at John Deere’s Waterloo, Iowa operation (00:09). Engineers meet to compare designs and work out issues for the new generation of tractors (in this case, it is the 2010, 2010U, 3010, and 4010 models). Electronic computers are used to help work out problems (01:17), like gear design. Pattern makers take the designs from the engineers and make wood patterns (01:50), which are then used to make casting molds. The parts are then subjected to one or more tests, including crank shafts tested with extreme vibrations (02:39) and reflectoscopes locating defects (03:30). The wood models then become tractor mockups (04:28), engines are tested and data is collected (05:05), and other tests are applied to the tractor. Prior to field testing, the experimental tractor is tested against extreme temperatures (08:51). The tractors move into field testing at the Waterloo testing grounds, where engineers test turns, suspension, towing, and more, carefully recording the data from each test. On one test track, a truck that’s been converted into mobile laboratory is hitched to tractor so engineers can record data on the go (10:37). A Divco panel truck, such as that used by the Helms Bakery in Los Angeles, is towed behind the tractor as a data gathering vehicle. From Waterloo, tractors are taken to the John Deere experimental farms, such as the one in Texas (11:30) where further tests are conducted. Industrial tractors are also subjected to the rigorous field tests (12:25). Maintenance and recording data is constant, including recording daily temperatures at the farm with a recording thermometer (14:10). These experimental tractors work in all conditions for five cropping seasons, and only after hundreds of thousands of hours of testing is the design approved, leading to mass manufacturing of the tractors for consumers, giving America a “new generation of power.”

This video was one of several that Deere showed to over 6000 dealers and guests at Deere day in Dallas August 30, 1960, when they introduced the New Generation of Power 4 and 6 cylinder tractors. It was later part of the John Deere Day program for 1961, but was first shown at Deere Day in Dallas. Thank you for helping preserve this important part of ag history!

Yanmar and Hitachi of Japan makes alot of Deere tractors and excavator s and Liebherr of Germany made dozers for quite some time. CAT uses Mitsubishi Japan on small medium equipment. Little is made in America except Chinese take out food now... These are the beginning years of modern engineering..which many other countries copied our ideas and machinery. Awesome work Thanks.

Does anybody know what the point was to put the two front wheels so close together on some of these tractors? I can't see any benefit from that and would actually even think that this just increases the area of the field that is negatively affected by the tractor's wheels.
@CumminsDslPwr
@CumminsDslPwr 6 лет назад
They weren't called "Row Crop" tractors for no good reason. The normal crop spacing was 36" when these tractors were produced. The two narrow front wheels traveled in between 2 rows as did each of the rear wheels. When the tractor reached the end rows of the field, you applied either the left or right brake and turned the front wheels 90 degrees and the tractor would pivot around very sharply on the rear wheel of the side that the brake was applied so you could turn around and head back in the other direction in a very small area. You could literally spin the tractor around on one tire. That is the reason for the narrow front tractors.

Also when they picked corn the snouts of the mounted pickers came down beside the front wheels. Look for corn picking videos and you'll see what I mean.

Lot of the front mounted row crop cultivators were mounted so you could'nt use a wide front end. Later on they made the cultivator mounted further back. I still cultivate row crops with a front mount 8 row 30" on a 1970 4020 with a wide front. Love it too!

@tyfrank3427
@tyfrank3427 Год назад
It may have cost them a lot of money, but that's what put them on top. And the timing of it was impeccable. This came out when International Harvester was building their 60 series tractors which were troublesome at the beginning. IH made a tractor with new engines and hydraulic systems when they needed a new clean sheet design. The 460 and 560 tractors still used the older design for the rest of the tractor, but compared to the primitive 2 cylinder hand clutch John Deeres, this seemed like a big step up. The transmissions and final drives were of similar design of the H and M tractors from 1939 but the new engines had double the horsepower causing a weak point. Yes, IH fixed them, but John Deere introduced these new generation of tractors just in time for the weaknesses to really show in the 460 and 560 tractors. That put John Deere on top and they never looked back since.

Well, back then you used your BRAIN and COMMON SENSE and didn't do stupid stuff, and you were alright. If you didn't, well, Darwinism won out... Only been in the last 30 years or so that society has had the overwhelming concern to protect the idiot and the stupid from the consequences of their stupidity, and required the addition of all the safety equipment and stuff that is on modern machinery. Thing is, no matter WHAT you do, you cannot protect an idiot from themselves... people take risks and do stupid stuff sometimes without thinking, and no matter how elaborate or complicated the safety stuff you add, people will STILL find a way to mangle or kill themselves doing stuff that if they'd have just thought about it a moment longer and asked themselves "what if something bad happened" they would have done it the right way to begin with. And, sometimes accidents happen that nobody could foresee... dropping the front end in a big gopher hole or having a slope suddenly give way or something. That's about the only legitimate use of safety equipment IMHO... Oh well... Later! OL J R :)
