Jamal, I think you were born in a earlier time! I absolutely love your love for the older music & keeping it alive. PLEASE play 'Abraham, Martin & John' by Dion. A sweet touching song about Martin Luther King, John & Bobby Kennedy It was released in 1968💙
@@loadedorygun It's pretty darn sad but alot of artists can write about high ideals and really stink at life. John Lennon and Yoko Ono eere on yhe Mike Douglass show and they randomly called people to say they loved them. Meanwhile Julian is a young boy being ignored by his dad and later on after John dies Yoko Ono sold Julian his dad's things. He needed to borrow money. She should have given them to him.
John Denver actually did write this song but it was first recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary. Their version is beautiful too. Oh man! My generation had the best cars and the best music!
adding my voice to this one. fantastic song, one of my mom's favorites. she died on Thanksgiving in 2015, and every year since I play "Calypso" in her memory.
Sunshine On My Shoulder is one of the most heart wrenching songs. It was probably because of the movie it was in (Sunshine) but man, I want to cry every time I hear it.
@@StephBer1 The movie “Sunshine” was based on a true story. I’ll always remember I bought the album for the soundtrack. Combination of movie and song will make you cry every time. 😈🌹😈
Peter Paul and Mary's version actually entered the US Hot 100 in the third week of October '69 and peaked at #1 in late December. Though, indeed, it stayed on the chart well into the new year.
There are so many John Denver songs worthy of an appearance here: Annie’s Song / Back Home Again / Rocky Mountain High / Take Me Home Country Roads / I’m Sorry / Fly Away / Sunshine on My Shoulders. 🎧 💙
You could list 100 songs and not even get em all. Rhymes & Reasons. This Old Guitar. Eclipse. The man was prolific. He wrote a pretty good to excellent song more often than most of us change our socks, let’s face it 😂
Cass could sing anyone off the stage if she felt like it. Instead, in true professional form, she slipped into a perfect understated harmony. RIP to both of them.
I remember this song as a really little girl when my brother got drafted to Vietnam...crap the tears are just rolling down my face...RIP DOUGLAS PAUL ZERBA KIA VIETNAM 1970...Jamal honest to God i haven't been able to listen to this song since...until now...so thru the tears I thank you
This came on the radio as I was leaving my girlfriend’s house hours before reporting for induction after being drafted. Always brings back sad memories but a beautiful song.
As much as I love John's solo work, I think, because of Mama Cass' voice and how their voices so beautifully blend, this is my absolute favorite version of this song. Simply sublime.
This song always makes me melancholy. My father traveled a lot for his job and he would sing this before he left. So I smile and miss him dearly whenever I hear this.
I don’t know where you live, but I live in Texas and every time I play any song by Denver on my guitar at the VFW it becomes a sing along. So I’m in a hotel in Glasgow in 2017 waiting for my brother in law and sister to come down to eat breakfast. There is a guitar in the lobby and I start playing Denver, not singing just playing it. Before long I had two staff members, and a family from Belgium all singing the exact words of the song, “Country road, take me back, to the place I belong, West Virginia, mountain mama, take me home, country road. John Denver must not be too underrated because I played a Garth Brooks (The Dance) after this and none of them knew it, and not to take anything away from Mr. Brooks (it could always be my guitar skills) they shuffled off to breakfast, well all except the six year old that was fascinated with the guitar which had to be taken from him by staff when I put it down and went to breakfast with my family.
Underrated? Maybe today, now that he's been dead for over 20 years, people under 30 don't realize how immensely popular he was or how many of his songs were covered by other artists, but back in the day he couldn't have been more rated.
John was a man who spent his life trying to make people happy and save the planet he didn't just sing about it. He did everything he could and died way too young.
I saw John Denver in Memphis in 1973. He preformed with Memphis symphony with just him on a chair on stage. His back drop was several screens showing great scenes, and when he sang Rocky Mountain Hi, it made me so home sick for Colorado. John was amazing!
I saw him in Memphis, too, at the Mid-South Coliseum. Great performance. I lived in Colorado for a while later, on the front range. It's easy to see why it inspired him.
Oh boy, John Denver is a legend that isn't talked about enough. Love this song. I cry every time, every every time I hear it. It has so much meaning in my personal life & it was popular when I was a young lady. Thank you for the video.
John Denver, Karen Carpenter, Linda Ronstadt, Cass Elliot, Steve Perry, Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Freddy Mercury. You can't mistake their voices when you hear them. Great duet.
@@pabsts____3964 And, what's left of the "record business" i.e. labels, are less concerned with building long-term careers than "marrying" the latest pretty face with the latest Max Martin composition....generally (but no less truthfully) speaking. Get a hit? Great.....next?
This song resonated so much due to the Vietnam War. It wasn't about the war, but neither was Run Through The Jungle. Both these song as well as others struck a nerve at the time.
john Denver had one of the most purest natural singing voices ever. He sang effortlessly and genuinely heartfelt. There really isn't a song John Denver sang that is lously
John Denver "Annie's Song" "Rocky Mountain High"- He had trouble with censorship because it was assumed he was referring to drugs. He was talking about the "high " of being in such a beautiful place. "Take Me Home Country Roads" "THANK GOD I'M A COUNTRY BOY" - It was recorded LIVE. "Fly Away"- A duet with Olivia Newton-John. Not sure if this is the actual title of the song.
At least he didn't become John Cougar :) John Mellenkamp took a long route to be able to sing under his real name - John Mellenkamp>John Cougar>John Cougar Mellenkamp>John Mellenkamp
In his autobiography, he said he was worried about being John Denver because people might get him mixed up with Bob Denver. Gilligan. His friend and manager told him if he played his cards right, his name will live on a lot longer than Bob Denver's.
John Denver was an underrated artist. He is so amazing. He usually plays a twelve string guitar. One of the purest voices. This video was done a few months before I was born, and he’s one of my favourite artists. I miss him.
Jamel... This song will always make me remember that movie “Armageddon” & the scene where Ben Affleck lifts up his woman (Liv Tyler) as they’re about to launch into space & he starts singing it, joined shortly after by the late Michael Clarke Duncan (remember him in “The Green Mile”?) & Steve Buscemi in hilarious fashion 😂😂😂. This was one hell of a “Throwback” mate 🇦🇺✊️😁🇦🇺. INCREDIBLE 👏👏👏👏
@@tracygalley8713 .... It was only fresh on my mind for the fact that I had only just finished watching Armageddon just moments before this video came through in my RU-vid feed & then “all the bells went off” when the video started playing 🤜💥🔔
I am old enough to remember seeing that performance the first time it aired back in the late summer of '72, late on a Friday night, thankful that the first week of HS Freshman Football practice was finally over! I was absolutely blown away. As a rock and roll fan (Beatles, Stones Zep, Purple, early Elton, etc.), I had been unfamiliar with John Denver, although he was about to explode on the music scene with "Rocky Mountain High." This performance that night made me a fan and true believer. Sadly, all four of the performers on that stage (John, Cass, Dick Kniss-bass, and Mike Taylor-6 string guitar) are all now deceased, but what a treasure they left us.
Jamel, you'll love Jonh Denver's "Rocky Mountain High", "Sunshine On My Shoulders" and "Thank God I'm A Country Boy". He was huge in the 70's, sold over 33 million records
I was two months old when they did this performance. Grew up with Denver on the radio all the time. When did people decide he wasn't cool. I never stopped listening.
I grew up being a huge John Denver fan - probably saw him in concert more than 20 times. I've never seen this video of him singing with Cass, who I consider one of the greatest voices ever. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this.
Don’t think John and Mama ever did a studio version of this. But this is a beautiful rendition. The studio version you heard was probably the Peter, Paul and Mary version.
When I was five, my grandmother took me to see family in Boston. It was the first time i remember being away from my parents for an extended length of time. This song played on the radio on our way to the airport. To this day it still makes me cry and feel the loneliness and sadness that only a small child can feel when separated from everything they are familiar with.
I remember my Mom singing this song in the late 60s around the house. It is one of the first songs I remember hearing. But, I believe Peter, Paul and Mary is who sang it first.
You are an amazing man with a heart the size of Texas. Mr. Video. When he’s upset from the jerks in this world putting him down or giving him a hard time you show him you care. You give him support and encouragement. So selfless, caring and kind. This world needs much more of you. Yep, you’re one amazing man!
John Denver was a rare talent ..one of the few male voices that puts your soul at ease, and a huge part of the sixties and seventies music scene. Country Roads Take Me Home
This is a very famous folk song. John Denver, like Cass Elliott, started out singing in a folk group. Later on they both became pop stars. Just like Bob Dylan. So many started as folk singers, and crossed over to pop and rock, where the money was.
John Denver had one of the most naturally beautiful vices I’ve ever heard. I’ve loved him since my childhood and I’ll never stop appreciating the beauty
You should react to more John Denver music....it will mellow out this crazy life ...he was a brilliant song writer...Songs like Singing Skies And Dancing Water....Poems Prayers and Promises etc etc...I love his music.
Howdy! Jamel, you would love iconic folk troubadours, Peter , Paul and Mary. They too sang at MLK’s Poor People’s March on Washington. Their harmonies are dreams. “ Blowin’ In the Wind” and “ The Great Mandala” are good starts!
They have lots of good songs like you recommend, but when I was a kid, my favorite Peter, Paul and Mary song was "I'm In Love with a Big Blue Frog." LOL They also wrote "Puff the Magic Dragon."
The version you've heard is probably the Peter, Paul, and Mary version. They didn't usually write their own material but their covers were so great they popularized the originals.
Gosh, he wrote such wonderful songs. Got to see him in person back in the late 70s/early 80s. Of course, her voice in incomparable. Also, I really love this version. I liked the cover by Peter, Paul and Mary, but having the original songwriter sing it is always special.
". . .when music was pure. . ." Under that umbrella, listen to Seals and Croft, Cat Stevens, Dan Fogelberg, Peter and Gordon, Lynn Murray, Judy Collins, Arlo Guthrie, and any of the people/groups that got their start in the era of Folk music.
Now that the John Denver door has been cracked, Annie's Song is a must. There probably wasn't a studio version of this song. They were just both on the Midnight Special so sang it.
@@debbieomi No worries. I only remembered because it was the top recommended video on the left of the video. I noticed your comment and thought I would link it to you :)
Thank you, that was wonderful. Of course, Peter, Paul and Mary put John Denver on the recording map in much the same way that Patsy Cline put Willie Nelson on the songwriters' map (yes, John Denver wrote that song)
There, may not be a studio version of them singing this together. Denver wrote it. (She's kidding about writing it.) I imagine he recorded it solo at some point. The best known studio recording is by peter, Paul and Mary.
@@brendanwienand9836 I give credit where it's due. Yes PPM did a fine job but they did not perform with the longing the song was intended to portray. The way John wrote it. My opinion. Matters as much as the others so my statement was not obscure
Whenever I'm down or feeling sad, I put on the headphones, cue up John Denver, close my eyes and my troubles just melt away in the beautiful music. Adding Cass Elliot's angelic voice is sonic nirvana. No question that music was pure in these days- I cannot imagine any radio station today promoting two artists harmonizing so perfectly to the sound of a couple of acoustic guitars and a stand up bass. I miss this so much.
It's not so much that music was "better" back then, it was just different. In fact the whole world was different and we looked at life in a different way. Folk music was big and influenced popular music as well. I love that you seem to be able to "see" the music in the context in which it was created!! For your own enjoyment I urge you to listen to the cover of Seal's song "Fields of Gold" by Eva Cassidy. It's amazing when an artist takes another person's song and takes it to a different level!!
