This man, gave me an opportunity. Not directly. But he invested in Rice’s leadership program. A program i took via coursera. A program that helped me qualify “on paper” for leadership. Thank you John. I’ve been in leadership for 3 years now. Striving to help my team in any positive way possible.
"idea is nothing, execution is everything" I DISAGREE with this, Suppose that Mark Zuckerberg never developed facebook, instead he only made a weather app, an app that shows weather, do you think Mark would have become a super billionaire ?
Zo Wo Mark didn’t have the vision. Mark was brought in to execute. Someone else had the vision. The idea. Mark was sued over this and lost. He then changed the entire platform based on what he experienced through execution. But we can always agree to disagree. Everyone sees the world through different eyes
@@SurferTy Alright, now please tell me : we suppose now that Mark never made facebook, instead, he only made a weather app would Mark have become a super billionaire ?
Zo Wo ridiculous analogy. Nothing to do with real world facts.. No one brought him the idea of a weather app. We already had MySpace... someone else would’ve created FB if Mark didn’t.

@@Zo-hc2fn the point is that you have to execute the idea. The idea in itself will not earn money or any other choice of success metric. But the execution still won't be a success unless you do it extremely well with the right timing and circumstances.

I discovered Sir. John Doerr yesterday and I've be surfing the internet to learn more from him. He is an oasis of knowledge. I would be following him closely till in become better, like him and the zenith.
My guess is it's that what I call Mercenary CEOs are better at sustainability which deals with revenues and bottom line And founders are better at disruption which may be counter to the immediate bottom line

'John Doerr: Ideas are easy, execution is everything' Execution translates the idea into practical reality, does it follows that execution is everything. Now imagine the idea is easy and wrong, execution still everything? Imagine another scenario, two people with two different easy ideas. One is locate in Ethiopia in the Tigray region and the other person is locate in Geneva. To what extent execution is everything? Since you must execute in a structure, Tigray being a structure affected by a deadly conflict, execution can't be everything in this case. The specificity of the structure can be a condition of impossibility for execution
Ideas are easy--and so is self belief--takes nothing at all. Because there is ground base reality to consider as well. Not every strategy is a good one. I've heard many times--"if you believe enough you will be successful." That is not accurate. Like running to LA to become that actor with no backup plan. Luck is a huge factor in that fair or not, that is a reality. The idea that self belief is what makes the success driven successful is only a small part of the equation. The guru will tell you the universe aligns with you with self belief. Not true. Self belief + plan of action that is researched + massive effort----that is what makes success and sometimes ill luck causes failure as well. Most of the gurus, great or small say the same thing I tell my own subscribers--you have to plan well and engage in effort and constantly re-evaluate what is working and what isn't. Hope this helps someone out there---Charles
potentially extremely significant unique value. great session despite this glitch: someone invited John Doerr without providing fresh new whiteboard markers. uh, really?
I think this tool is great but you have to be really careful to separate ideation from analytics. Google suffers from "let's see the data" and can't really come up with new ideas is only able to make things slightly better...

While it is true an idea without execution won’t gain you a dollar. Execution on the wrong idea can cost you millions. Execution and the idea are equally important.

@@Zo-hc2fn You missed the point. Imagine he had the idea for Facebook but never did anything to execute it. That's an idea WITHOUT execution (worthless). Sooooooooooooooooo ... poverty in Africa is because of global warming? hmmmmm ... Human beings are fascinating. No matter how scientifically advanced they get they still behave as primitives; Always believing in some kind of apocalypse. It's charming in a way. It's crazy ... but charming.
Tell that to the Rapa Nui, or the Mayans, or whoever built Göbekli Tepe, or the Sphinx, or countless other cultures lost to the sands of time. It's actually crazy that human memory is so short.
What do you expect, his "partner" is the biggest climate fraud in history - Al Gore. He even admitted his green investments weren't particularly successful.
"Adding more carbon to atmosphere is going to affect agriculture in Africa"????Hmm! Doesn't it actually help more plant growth? Just threw me off with his "eco beliefs" when effects are not yet fully understood with almost all models coming up short. So if a VC made a bet in a field such as this, would he not try to influence policy by perhaps supporting unsubstantiated data? If oil companies could fund research to support their agenda the opposite camp must be doing that as well!
