I couldn’t imagine the fear and pain the slaves felt in those final moments. Being starved and chained together underneath a ship is one thing…..but imagine when they realized they were about to be thrown overboard. My heart shatters at the thought. RIP to all who lost theirs lives that day 😞

Chained and packed atop others, while rats crawled and ate their flesh is bad enough. Bound through the transport, they released fecal matter which attracted rodents; hence diseased as the dialogue here stated.

@williamarthurfenton1496 5 лет назад
@Dorothy Crawley They ruled southern Spain only, and the Moors were from North Africa. He really doesn't have any black features, and indeed you don't have to look for any to find him attractive. As a mirror to what you say I very much like black features, and feel no impulse to find white features on a woman if she's African in origin.
@williamarthurfenton1496
@williamarthurfenton1496 5 лет назад
@Dorothy Crawley You do realise history is documented? English history goes back to the Roman times (and they talked about the Celts who lived there before) Not only that we have this thing called genetic markers, so we know peoples origins. Are you African-American? Have you done your DNA test to see what yours are? (as in usually countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon..etc) Look, you in fact disservice the massive African continent and diversity of cultures within it by warping history. It's about what is wrongly valued in what is, yes, a very European centred view of what so-called matters with The Enlightenment and technology. Well, to people who see things from a broader perspective, cultures like Native Americans, Aboriginal Australians or indeed various African cultures existed BETTER within their environment-- because they existed with it and didn't try and destroy it.
@williamarthurfenton1496
@williamarthurfenton1496 5 лет назад
@Dorothy Crawley Land ownership is again more of a European idea. It never belongs to anyone, and the only problem is attacking and displacing people, not living near them. I'm not American either. Anyway it's funny that it doesn't take much to bring out your true ideas and agenda here. Some of you Americans as well are kind of funny about claiming this and that heritage, either being (white)Irish or (black)Native, when in nearly every case they have almost none and more of other things. You're not interested in talking sense.

I absolutely love this movie. I absolutely hate the scene after this where Belle goes to her room and is having yet another moment of self loathing because of the color of her skin. I hate that she feels that way and that there are many people of darker hues who even today feel the exact same way. What saddens me also is the fact that SOO MANY people deny the hate that is in their hearts toward people of color and that a disparity still exists today in spite of having a man of color as President and all other strides made. Yes,we've come a long way but not facing the truth of our current situation of supposed racial tensions won't just go away if they are never dealt with and you can't deal with something you won't even admit is a problem and see that you're a part of it!

Preach. That scene you mentioned and also the hair combing scene r so beautiful and yet so tragic at the same time. Having to explain the texture of black hair and looked at as if we are aliens from another planet/that our hair is just too "wild, inconvenient" or that we must do everything to "tame" it, is emotionally taxing and it can make u feel other-worldly ....like poor Dido in this film. The implications and issues in this film are brilliant and the historical relevance and shift the court case presented were absolutely necessary toward the progression of equality in the world.
@monmothma3358
@monmothma3358 2 года назад
The fight against racism is important, and a disparity still exists. But I don't think it helps to insist people are racist and hateful when they deny it. There are at least three problems with that: 1. It's unstrategic. You'll push allies away, and you need allies in this fight. To a degree, people become what you expect them to become. 2. Fighting for POC to not have to loath themselves, but you want others to do it instead? How is that the right thing to do? 3. What if there are cases that you're wrong, assuming a person hates POC? Then you not only wrong that person, you make the world an even more threatening place for the POC who have to walk around thinking people are against them. I'm not denying racism, I'm just saying that in the cases you're wrong, you'll hurt all sides.
@kp361
@kp361 2 года назад
Racists don't tend to 'deny the hate that is in their hearts' - they embrace it. But most people aren't racist. There is no 'hate in their hearts'.

Although that particular aspect was true for all women of this time no matter their color. Women's lives were dictated by men, whatever their desires, whatever their position, was focused completely on what a man could gain or provide.

@leonamay8776
@leonamay8776 4 года назад
That was quite common for all women until semi recently. My great grandmother was married off (very young) to the man that was engaged to her older sister. He had come home too late from the war and was presumed dead so his fiancée had been married off to the next eligible gentlemen. But the family wanted to honour the agreement so they simply offered him their youngest daughter (against her clearly stated wishes) and he said yes. And that was that, her opinion was absolutely irrelevant.

you all are kinda dum... 😂 he said that because it's a huge mistake to marry out of one's class, basically if you are an aristocrat you had to marry an aristocrat, Dido was illegitimate and black she would be lucky to marry a reverend much less an aristocrat... in the real history she actually married a servant because no man of even low standing ever wanted her.. while her cousin was sought after by Marquess and Earls, but she ended up marrying for love to a rich aristocrat who is the heir to a title of Earl of Winchelsea

I believe thats when Dido's papa realized his reasonings for his judgements an his love for his Dido and Elizabeth does not differ from one another. He realized more now that Dido is loved by John. Shes no longer the child he took under his care, raising her, loving her as Captain Lindsey her real father would've if he was able too. As an adult she will face thw reality and he changed it before she started her married life. A true Father's act of love.

in real history he left Lady Elizabeth £40,000 and left Dido £500🤥🤥 not just that he acknowledged Elizabeth as his niece attended her wedding and guaranteed her money in a marriage contract, while he never let Dido married and she was old when she married a servant no contract drawn for her so all her money belongs to her husband automatically and he never acknowledged Dido as his niece... a true father's love for Elizabeth that is
