I finally watched this movie. I was utterly floored at how relatable so many of the scenes were. I am a biracial child adopted into a white family from birth. Everything she felt, I have felt. I feel as if this is the first time an accurate picture has been portrayed of someone like me. Though this story is from the past it speaks to the notion that society doesn't change much. It just goes through phases of darkness and then awakening.

@hydraelectricblue

Amelia Allen Oh absolutely I could eat with my family , but could I shop for food with my mom without people asking if we were together then the answer is no. You can experience exclusion in many ways like I said the exact method is different in a lot of situations, but the feelings are the same. As long as people see race as a marker of where a person" should " be in our society the problems will always be there. If those people in the supermarket had been taking cues from anything other than race it would have been obvious she was my mother things like me calling her "Mom" , but it was so hard for them to put me in a box I didn't belong they ignored every other cue.

@@hydraelectricblue hello hope you're doing well, this comment was year's ago but I found it relatable. I too experience the same with many people staring and asking questions especially at the grocery store if we were my mother's children. Some people really are rude and need to get out more.

It is evident racism is still alive and well, Sam Reid deserved a Bafta and Oscar as did Gugu-mabatha Raw, and the director. This should also have won an Oscar. This movie was a masterpiece in every sense of the word.

I saw this movie two weeks ago and wow it is such a well acted, well written, well delivered piece of cinema. It is not just about her color but it's a story very much wrapped within the layers of that time (women's rights, color, and historical facts). I cannot wait until this comes to DVD, it's definitely worth buying and keeping in a collection amongst the greats.

I absolutely could not wait to see this movie when it came out only to have a hard time finding it in theaters. I had to go to a small private owned theater in Manhattan to see this. It's still very underrated but the movie was executed perfectly. This should have gotten as much publicity as Pride & Prejudice and 12 years a slave. I cant watch it enough!!

As with "Amazing Grace", this is now two great period pieces from that era and the opening of eyes and hearts in the British empire. Both extremely well written and acted and highly emotional true stories with absolutely GREAT men and women who stood up for one of the greatest atrocities in human history. I think they are both brilliantly portrayed and cast -- the true height of movie making.

"The economic growth was based on slavery. Most workers were slaves, or indentured servants. It was "illegal" to be black and free, unless you were under the protection of a usually rich white household, like Belle was." *Some* economic growth was based on slavery. Not all. And there were lots of workers who weren't slaves out in the colonies. Irish, Cornish, Chinese etc. And if it was illegal to be black and free how do you account for Freedmen? Former slaves *legally* granted their freedom? And slavery was never legal under common law in Britain. Nobody's denying the horrors of slavery, but inaccurate sweeping generalisations aren't helpful.

Reviewing the film for History Extra, the official website of BBC History Magazine, James Walvin OBE, professor emeritus of the University of York noted that while the second half of the film centres on Dido Elizabeth Belle's involvement in the Zong case, in reality she was "nowhere to be found in the Zong affair".Much of the historical evidence is there - though festooned in the film with imaginary relishes and fictional tricks.

This movie was one of my favorite But when I do the research it's a lie. A movie to where white people tried to portray themselves in a good light..Dido Belle was NOT acknowledged by her father she was dropped of to the lordship but the question remains what her actually role she served them til she was 31 when the the lord died he never acknowledge her as his niece in his will he gave her 200 but then boost it up to 500 while he was living she was only given 5$ a month. Her mother at 14 was captive by her father gave birth to Belle when she was 15 she was his slave on his ship which he eventually freed her gave her a piece of land which she had ten years to build her a house. They never Belle acknowledge her as blood her dad had five other children and because they could pass for white he claimed them and left them everything... truly want to know why the artist painted the picture the way he did. That was truly an act ordained by GOD. The painting was placed in the attic for years and later on someone who inherited the house they discovered the painting which now sit in I believe in the Scotlands home or museum.

F that crap they didn't respect her they feared the position of that guy and to be a family pet is nothing to brag about her experience is greatly eclipsed by the lack of morals humanity and ethics of the people of that era her life is nothing more then a display of surviving not thriving how can one ever be able to have a life in that state and to give the impression that she was doing well is comparing her to other women of color in that era like a double bad is better then a triple bad lol her story is lost she was born and never lived allowed to survive but not thrive a gift provided to her by the Most High the gift of life but she was told lies to make her think she needed the approval of others for her life to have purpose and meaning I'm not impressed by how this movie was written because it makes it seem as if she was thriving when she was just surviving she was a child of rape....... if you are a women of color it didn't matter you were treated like crap struggling for food here is this guy who brings you bread or soup why do you like him is it due to your emotions or your situation its called Stockholm syndrome mixed with PTSD a person in that mind state who is being victimized is not providing physical exchange willingly but the movie is not for the truth of her life it is very watered down the only part of her life that is accurate in the movie is her name as for the rest it should have been left on the cutting room floor it's not telling her true story

@@thrshwll1526 Dido couldn't have meet John daviniere because he was a french servant/valet, he wouldn't even ever speak to Lord Mansfield he is a valet!! and Dido married him after the death of lord mansfield and when she was 32 years old... she also had no involvement with any case as it was unsuitable for gentlewoman to even know this stuff, she does menial task but Lord Mansfield had his own secretary which he awarded in his will. she can't even sit in dining room, she will never be present in any sort of party thrown by the family, in diary of Mary Hamilton ( she was cousin and close friend of Louisa, the Stepmom who marry Elizabeth's father) she visited Kenwood several times but throughout her diary she never once mentioned dido, even though she described every member of the family meticulously even the parish priest got mentioned, no she wasn't a racist as she was a progressive but improvished woman and part of blue stocking intelligent women. from her diary entry, we know Dido was hide away somewhere, and Mary Hamilton wasn't even guest in that sense, by being cousin of Louisa she is technically member of the family and no need to hide dido... and there are so many lies!!! even with this few FACTS we know about real Dido!! this movie can't never happened... she wasn't rich, she wasn't parade to find suitor, she wasn't involved in any case, she can't even meet servant valet john daviniere, she wasn't present in party, john daviniere wasn't a lawyer but a servant.
