Black Excellence!! I've never seen a college band come close to this performance of Execution, formation and precision. Walter Harris (Doc) was "Legendary Greatness" rest well.
This was doing my junior year; 2nd year in the band. We would practice day and night, until we perfected it; sometimes without the band director. In New Orleans, we are taught (at an early age) about being the best and putting in hard work. Our band Director back then (the late Walter F. "Doc" Harris) would push us. I had the fortune of meeting him when I was a kid when he taught my Aunt at Carter G. Woodson Jr. High in the 1970s. Need less to say, where I was going to high school at . . . "The K." as we called it :-)
I am a St. Aug Graduate and Prep Graduates Family and 3rd Generation BandHeads, the fascination and awesomeness is: Kennedy was the only high school band and high school marching units which could be a Human Jukebox Jr and 'Lil SU. That required advanced skill and they were High School KIDS. That's damn near impossible to perform and excute like college kids. It's the band director and arranger who create the formula but without the talent and skill of the children it could not create and execute the solution (see the video). 100!
THANKS FOR RECOGNIZING THAT MY BROTHER...IM SURE ALL MY BANDMATE BROTHERS REALLY APPREICATE THAT. WE GAVE "BIRTH" TO THE HALFTIME SHOWS DONE AT KENNEDY IN THE EARLY 80'S THX TO FORMER JFK/SUBR DEDICATED "ALUMNIST.
Thank you for the completely. This was (I think my Junior Year playing in the Permission Section). The ironic part (for me), is that the band director (the late Walter F. "Doc Harris), taught at Carter G. Woodson Jr. High in the 1970's (in which he taught my and at CGW). When I was a kid, I went to CGW, played in the band and always wanted to go to St. Aug. to perform with them. We didn't have much money, so my mom and aunt, found out the Doc was teaching at Kennedy (through friends at our church, in which their son was due to be the Drum Major my Sophomore year at Kennedy). Doc meet my parents (in which he already knew them through my grandmother) and well, the rest is history; "Lord's of Sound"; 10,000 Watts; C/O' 88; miss and love you Doc; thanks for preparing all of us that passes through JFK for the future 🤎💯😇
To all the st.aug haters pull up Kennedy-Jam Tonight video and even though the video wasn't clear because it was caught in Hurricane Katrina........st.aug. didn't want NO PART of that and if anyone has a clear full video of 1987........Kennedy verses them please post the video to shut all the HATERS UP !!!!!!!
I MIGHT BE THE 'BIGGEST BAND HEAD " OF THE HGH SCHOOL JUKEBOX ON THE BAYOU.I MISS THE YARD,I PLAYED THE TRUMPET AND WHEN I PLAYED IT I MADE IT "TALK".EVERYONE KNW ME IN THAT TRUMPET SECTION...MY NAME IS PERCY.WE WERE THE THE 'DOMINATING MARCHING INTIMIDATING MOST MARCHING HGH SCHOOL BAND IN THE N.O. @@noa-qv6jb fah sho bro.. Everybody's watching Kennedy hard.. I'm not sure if you know how dangerous Kennedy was before Katrina, But Most people who know what Kennedy Band was, Know that if Kennedy ever get back anywhere close to where they was before Katrina as far as size and power, Everybody's in trouble.
@@EarthAngel504 Yea you rite! Periodt! They have to show these tapes to them. The ridiculous Gentrification in New Orleans is trying to wipe out the Marching Band Culture in New Orleans. Y'all goin make me do a youtube on this.lol
Back in them days from 1985 to 1992 everybody knew the pecking order when it comes to marching bands in the City of New Orleans:High School Top 5 was:#1 Kennedy, #2 St Aug,#3 Fortier,#4 John Mac,#5 ,Mc35 and Junior High Top 5:#1 Colton,#2 Bell,#3 Capdau,#4 Gregory, #5 Woodson !!!
yea. back then, up until Katrina, the High school bands were swole. now. After Katrina, these Highschool bands are literally smaller than the major Middle school bands. and I'm willing to bet money the top Pre Katrina Middle schools would probably smash the best top Post Katrina High school bands. You have no idea how far New Orleans bands have fallen.
Was it Mr Harris who came from woodson or the new Kennedy uniforms in the mid 80$ that made the K what it was or was it a combination of both inquiry minds wanna know?
Harris, open enrollment and Daryll Landry getting killed at John McDonogh in early 1982.Kennedy went over one hundred people when John Mack went down,John McDonogh last year of 100+ was 1984!!Kennedy was 100+ in 1983/84 and that's when they got the uniforms you see them with here. Most kids that went to John McDonogh younger brothers and sisters went to Kennedy in the Mid 80s.Ex.Dwayne,Rick,Kim Paulin went to the Mack in the 70s and early 80s where Scott,Roderick, and Philip went to the K in the mid 80s,Scott actually attended both the Mack and the K.FKM for Life!!
Rahloh McDonogh i had went to jmck in 86-89 my first year Mr Sanders was there but then he wasn't there they went down ever since,, in the back of my mind I always wondered why jhn mk had went down
Being a former Knight of the 70's, I give props the JFK. This was actually a good field show. Except for the lil mishap in the beginning. The band sounded good and looked good. This was a period when marching bands were very, very good in the city. From AJ Bell, Peters, & Woodson etc, made high schools that much better. As to who had the better high school band, I'll leave that for discussion, but I bleed Purple!
Gary Smith There are no "former" Knights. Once a Purple Knight, always a Purple Knight. If only the K had their own style and stopped trying to be lil SU.
It's been a year since some comments on here was made..but, I'd like to say we never once copied off of Southern University...Now, we called them a sister school. I went to the K I'm a JFK cougar for life... I'll band director and Southern University band director we're cool... so yes we had some of same field shows..
I know its been some years but at the time what did you expect when all the band directors all March for k and then March for southern and then came back to direct the band st.aug got they whole style from famu with a mixture of southern
You can easily spot cancerous people to be around, one who watch a whole 8 min. video but only talk about the 1 or 2 second of it if something bad happens.. It show the type of people they are and no matter what happen in your life,, while dealing with these people they will sit and wait for some bad shit to happen to you to hold it over your head and tare you down.. to those who the shoe fit.
Kennedy didn't have enough of a run to top st aug.....you could count on ya hand how many times they may have beat st aug....but on the field neva......
JFK/SU ALUMNIST ALWAYS GAVE BCK TO KENNEDY MARCHING BAND TO MAKE SURE NOBODY WOULD/COULD OR TRIED TO ATTEMPT TO OUT DUE ANY OF OUR HALFTIME SHOW PERFORMANCES FRM 81-84.P. BARARD(TRUMPET SECTION)
Man them cougars was unstoppable in 87 we opened up the French quarter fest it was in the new paper with the K coming down French quarters I'm class of 84 and I went to Gregory best 2 schools in the city The baby U all day
Roland Doucette played snare in 85 that might be Kennedy best ever drum section of all time for the Cougars fo sho I think Gregory D played snare for the K in 85 too
What you smoking enough of a run? Man Da K was right there in the 80's and just had the 90's on lock period. St Aug had the catholic school notoriety that's all. Being a public school was the only thing gave St.Aug more popularity over Kennedy. But the streets knew what the real was and what band was Da best.
