I think John is one of if not the greatest male vocalist of all time, so versatile and this song is an anthem. John can sing anything, a great performer, interacts with the crowd, loves his fans and gives them so much respect and an all round great human being. We love our John.

I’ve met him a couple of times (I’ve done the bagpipe bit on this song for a few of his concerts) and what you see is what you get. He loves showing off, he loves the attention he gets but is still very grounded and humble about his amazing talent. He loves sharing his knowledge with up and coming vocalists too

This is the concert he ended with his version of 'Help'. Queen asked him to replace Freddie when he died. He was 'Australian of the Year' once, but has always been very grounded and humble.

Yes, his voice is epic! The overall feel of this song is epic. I didn’t catch all the lyrics, but the feel of it was very uplifting. The one half English and one quarter Scottish in me was definitely captivated by the bagpipes.

For those who missed it, check out 7.37 to 8.37 where he loosens the microphone stand & then throws it in the air, cathes it then throws it onto the stage, & later flicks it up into his hand with his shoe, now that's some skill in itself!

Freddie Mercury apparently said John had one of the best voices in the world. There is also a story that he was on a shortlist to replace him and Queen's singer. Glad the rest of the world is finally discovering him. He has a lot of good songs.

This song came out in 1986 and is the unofficial Australian national Anthem. John has a truly phenomenal voice and you can hear why the group Queen asked John to be their frontman when Freddie passed away. John is 73 now and at home recovering from an operation he had last August for mouth cancer and we all wish him well. Great reaction. John is one of the best singers I have heard,the other is Adam Lambert at the moment frontman for Queen.Just goes to show how good they are when Queen ask you to be their frontman. Not many that could take on such a big task like that after Freddie. Been a fan of John's since early 80s been hooked since his music takes me to my happy place. While we have more than just one, if you ask any Aussie what the unofficial National Anthem is, 9 out of 10 will answer this song. It's actually where John's nickname of 'The Voice' comes from. He is also known as 'Whispering Jack' after his massive comeback album, where his new manager went and mortgaged his house to make the record. This song was the first single and after a fight to get it played on the radio, and the album went 24 times Platinum and spent 25 weeks at #1 on the Australian Albums chart. It was also the first album released on CD in the Australian market too. Baby, you are totally correct that John is right up there with the best male talent in the world. Queen were talking to him as a replacement to Freddie Mercury after his passing. John prefers being at home and his tours basically only cover Australia and New Zealand - his song 'Burn for You' explains that. He is a singer's Singer and many of the top talents in the world deely respect his work and want to work with him. It was quite affronting to many of us to have Celine Dion, who we recognise as a massive international talent, completely fangirling over John during her tour about 6 years ago when he is such a humble and private guy. We thought she was being a little over the top, but she absolutely adores him both as an artist and a person. Having lived in Australia for many years, I came to realise that John Farnham is the greatest singer ever, and this song is the ultimate anthem to define what peace on a world scale means. 'We're all someone's daughter, we're all someone's son, how long can we look at each other, down the barrel of a gun'. No other song or singer has ever said it better or with more conviction.

In the same concert - John's cover of AC/DC's Long Way to the Top. The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra had a great fun time playing with him. Every time I come across a Farnsey reaction I haven't seen before I have to stop and play it. You would really enjoy John singing a duet (Live) with his backing vocalist Lisa Edwards. The song is Angels. He has performed with Tom Jones, Celine Dion and other international artists. He was asked to perform with Queen when Freddie Mercury passed. He has an incredible vocal range, and more importantly, is a n absolutely wonderful, generous man.

Wow! What a great voice he has! He was lead singer on Little River Band for awhile in the mid 80s. Amazing voice! Oh love the pipes!

He was an apprentice plumber, he rides horses tohave fun and keep fit, he stays in tune jumping up and down on stage. See playing to win. This and help were the 2 encores after a 2 hour concert.

Years ago I spent an afternoon with him playing pool and hanging out on one of Queensland's resort islands. He's a heck of a nice man and enjoys having a laugh. His talents are off the charts. Yes, he is one of the greatest pop vocalists, ever.

I have remembered this song since I was living in England and I just can't get enough of it

I encourage you to look up some of his later performances of this song, (like the one with Brian May and Olivia Newton-John) where he was around 70(!) years old..he STILL has the pitch, control and power. It is awesome to hear and watch! And as a former monitor mix engineer, I can confirm that he is not using any kind of processing on his vocals.

I wish I'd had the chance to see him live. I believe recent illness has put an end to his singing days, but wow, did he make a massive contribution to Australian music and entertainment!!! This song is an Australian anthem. You have the message partly right, but it's also about peace and equality. 'How long can we look at each other down the barrel of a gun?'. I remember seeing a televised 'Concert for Rwanda' (a fundraiser for the people of Rwanda affected by the civil war of the time) where he made a little joke of that lovely hair, shaking it out of his face theatrically, like a model. The crowd loved it. He has a real talent for comedy, in addition to that freakishly amazing singing voice.

You're totally right about John Farnham being a great performer .. I saw him live in Melbourne back in the early 90s, and he really put on a show .. Lots of chat and joking with the audience, as well as a completely professional and top quality performance .. Wishing him all the best in his on-going recovery from mouth cancer .. His operation in Sept' 2022 involved removing part of his jaw, which means sadly he may never sing again .. But he'll always be legendary here in Australia.

I can remember my sisters going up to the local church in the early 70s to watch John arrive for his wedding. I was 11 when John had his first hit record and he is one of a few musicians that occupies a special part of my life. Thank you for the great reaction. I have always loved this song. I am one of the rare people who hate live versions of a song. He had an amazing friendship with Olivia Newton-John, and they sang many songs together, including covers of each other's music. He was also the lead singer of the Little River Band for a while.

You're The Voice was released internationally in 1987, but performed relatively poorly in the US; it was re-released in the US in 1990, after his song Two Strong Hearts made the charts whee You're The Voice spent 8 weeks on the charts.

Johnny Farnham as he was early in his career, was famous throughout Australasia for more than 10 years before he sang this song. He had a bad time during the 1970's after his Manager at the time ripped him off & he returned to his trade as a Plumber for a few years just playing a few clubs & literally singing at Weddings & Parties around Melbourne, his home City. A chance meeting between his wife Jill & her friend Gaynor Wheatley had John meet up with Gaynor's Husband Glenn Wheatley, probably the Premier Band Manager in Australia who also managed Australian Artist's & World famous Australian Band, Little River Band. But because John had been out of the Top Music scene for a few years, they had trouble getting John a recording contract. His 1st Album back called Uncovered (with songs such as Help, Please Don't Ask Me etc) had minimal success, but is still a very good album. But unbelievable as it is to believe, they couldn't get him a big contract. So they recorded this & John was going to mortgage his home for it, but Glenn wouldn't allow it & mortgaged his own to have this Album distributed. This song was the breakthrough comeback song for John & the Album Whispering Jack is still the highest selling Album in Australasia today. Needless to say it saved the Wheatley's home & some. By the way, he played Soccer as a kid as well as Cricket.

What makes this man so special is the way he can chat to his audience in between songs and be just as entertaining chatting as he is singing. He has this ability to talk to one person in the audience, but still get everybody else in the room involved. I’ve seen him live three times and each time was uniquely special.

He is one of the greatest performers to see live that you'll ever find. I've been to so many of his concerts over the years. This was a special concert done with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. His version of the Beatles' song "Help" from this same concert is fantastic and performed after he'd sung for hours.

Farnham has a lot of uplifting, socially conscious songs, like 'That's Freedom', 'Chain Reaction' and 'Have a Little Faith'.

Whats interesting is that this was actually the second time he extended his set - well after 3 hours of singing.

The more you listen the more he will surprise you.... he sings everything from girly girly pop to theatre, soul, rock..... from Jesus Christ Superstar to AC/DC and Led Zeplin covers. Almost every different genre reveals a new vocal talent. lol

I know its a bit rude to mention other groups when you are reacting to perfection like this, but i am sitting here and thinking if there was ever a perfect week for me, it would be to attend a Night Wish concert and later in the week attend a John Farnham concert. The audience participation for both groups is phenomenal, and the voices of the lead singers is just magnificent.

John was actually a plumber, He also had the name "Whispering Jack" named after his fantastic album. Not sure about the "soccer player" though he was born in England, Glad you enjoyed it... but wouldn't anyone enjoy a performance like this.

It's funny you mentioned queen and freedy as they as him to replace freedy after he died but John declined as didn't want to be away from his family that's why there's not much of him overseas but alot of international travelled to Australia to sing with him when they played here him and Tom Jones got on well sung songs together Ray Charles heaps of different artists and alot of bands wanted to sing with him as well He sing anything opera plays rock blues ect anything you can think of he sings it Cheers ladies 🇦🇺🦘👍

I have never thought of the lyrics as encouraging self growth. We come together and unite to give others, whether they are our best mates or perfect strangers, a leg up any time they are in a bind, which is often with regular bushfires, droughts and flooding rains! We are generally very supportive of under dogs and very outspoken about tall poppies and very accepting of everyone who comes to love this country, regardless of whether they have been here for 15 minutes or 50,000 years! One of my teachers used to be John's main sound technician. I often worked at the entertainment centre when farnham performed as well so got to see some brilliant concerts for free.
