RHCP was my favorite band when I was a kid since like age 8 or 9, but in HS I worshipped Kurt Cobain and Bradley Nowell and Layne Staley and went through my own almost death and when I was using as an adult John Frusciante's music and the way he survived and came out intact and talented as ever meant so much to me and helped me hold on. And it means so much to me today now that I'm a normal healthy adult, and getting the opportunity to see him with the band after thinking I might not ever get the chance is incredible!
Anthony is underrated, heavily, by RHCP fans. He's the personality of the band and the thing that connects the wild talents of John and Flea to normal people. That's a wild ability that very few people in the world possess.
Absolutely, people talk a lot of crap about Anthony Kiedis. He's such a unique personality, he brings so much charisma to the band. Backed up perfectly by Flea, John and Chad.
@@rainflowers1099yes, I've seen a lot of people admire John and talking crap Anthony, i saw them as a band. Without one of them no matter who. They're not Red Hot Chili Peppers.
John is the Heartthrob and Flea is the Hype Man -- of course these dudes are gonna get attention.. But, Anthony is Great and a Great songwriter. He is the heart and soul of the band.
John is one of them music legends that where to good to be true and passed away young but the madness is he's still alive. Not many left like him. We are blessed to have him.
How much of that has to do with his chance at redemption? We always ask for people to be rehabilitated without offering the chance at redemption that might service that end. People like the talent of pain but not to see the sufferers of its consequence.
This interview looks more like a couples counseling session. Anthony keeps giving John that look like “babe you never told me that bothered you.” It’s like all these answers John is giving is breaking news to Anthony. John’s honesty sets for a delightfully awkward interview.
Every single time I see them together it’s literally like a married couple in a therapy session it’s the funniest thing ever. Even their most recent interview together on Rick Rubins podcast it’s totally couples therapy. And I knew it would be.
Flea always suggests bringing John back. THANK YOU FLEA. This is such an amazing interview, the questions were so on point and they answer them so kindly and with such vulnerability....
i love watching anthony listen to people talk. especially his band members he always looks so focused and intrigued like he really cares about what they have to say
I love that about him! He’s a really good listener. Even today, with all the success he’s had, he still listens to people really intently and that’s its own form of respect. Really good quality to have.
He is a great communicator most lead singers are. If you’re not a good communicator you can’t be a good front man. Kurt was a bad communicator and while he could sing alright his stage presence was just a statue.
Kurt definetly wasnt a statue on stage. In his last year he was, but earlier he was a lunatic. He was a bad communicator off stage tho. @@ExcitedAnacondaSnake-hg8ec
It was sad times for the peppers. Anthony kept relapsing on H and C. John recently cleaned up from 5 years of H and C, as well as killing rivers and losing all his money. Flea was on a bunch of prescribed meds. They were all seen as losers within the industry, written off, until californication was a big hit.
If you’ve followed the band through it’s history, this is the most candid and honest interview, during this time, of Anthony and John. Can’t wait for the new album!
I was wondering when I saw the thumbnail if this was one of the interviews I've heard about where they talk about their addictions very candidly.....a struggle I've been through as well.....and reading this it's gotta be it.
Been a fan since freaky stylee. I Remember thinking they were finished after John left. Then I was watching tv around the time of this interview and they came on live and played scar tissue. I couldn't believe it. I was blown away at how good they sounded and it started round 2. I'm so hyped for round 3 with the new album 5/6/22.
I saw and met John on the Nutstalk tour in 1997 (just 2 years before this interview) and though he still seems kind of fragile here.....I cannot believe he turned his life and health around this much in just 2 years. In 1997 when I met him and watched him perform...my friend and I both felt certain that he would not be long for this world. It was bleak to say the least. John was extremely irritable and frankly looked like a dying man...and though at that time it is rumored he was off Heroin in 97...he was most definitely smokimg crack and still heavily using drugs....but his physical condition was staggering to see in person. I know there is an interview with him and Gibby Haynes from 1997 floating around on the internet and in that video though John is much more lucid than he was when I met him...he was still clearly having a hard time completing thoughts and would stutter and stammer a lot when he spoke. Watching these older interviews of him from 94, 97, 99 and now in 2021 etc....it really is nothing short of remarkable that he managed to pull himself back up. Definitely grateful he got through those dark years and that we have all been lucky enough to enjoy the man and his music for several more years.
A lot of people are familiar with junkies they know. They’ll be people using for 6 months a year or two maybe more, frequently running out of money. John on the other hand had an unlimited flow of money to shoot yo his arm. The avg junkie will be on cloud 9 after 30 days clean. But these 5+ year daily binges, you’re not ok for YEARS. Withdrawal hangs around for months. lethargy, depression follows…it’s horror.
Oh ok - that makes more sense. That interview is wild. My favorite part is when he says, exasperatedly: "A funk guitarist is not what I am." Hearing him state that so matter-of-factly 5 years after he had quit the band and barely played guitar is strange. It seems even then his memories of being a Chili Pepper and perception of his public image as a guitarist were still fresh and hitting a nerve. @@clinteastwood6875
The nutstalk tour? Are you kidding me haha. For years I also didn’t get the innuendo of red hot, chili, peppers, 🌶️ Edit: auto-spell check is utterly useless. One letter was off in “edit” and it changed it to WAIT. wt*?
John: They said John couldn’t handle the success Anthony: who said that??? John: hmmmm….Flea Anthony: AHEM!!! Seems there were still some unresolved issues back then.
@@DanRelayer_Ukraine It’s partly true, success especially in the field of art (not the modern pop stars) means you are obliged to act and live a certain way to keep that image and formula alive. Frusciante probably liked his own ritual of things where he could write, perform, explore and do drugs the way he had before. Also he was so younger than the other two who had lived out their younger underground years and were hungry for mega success.
His facial structure actually changed after he got off drugs because he had surgery on his nose and had all his teeth removed and replaced with dentures.
@@bendagostino2217 it's a miracle that he actually ended up looking better after his addiction, you would think the drugs would have fucked him up mentally end physically.
@@goldmantis5850 Drugs do fuck you up mentally, physically, emotionally. It doesn't mean you're destined to be a monster. You recover. You unfuck yourself in recovery. Sometimes it takes a month or two. Other times it takes the rest of your miserable life.
Hell if you've got a manager and record label that want you to not look like you just came off a five year crack and heroin binge they just send you to the finest plastic surgeons and oral surgeons where your busted dope face and grill are jackhammered into oblivion and your new showbiz face is spackled into place along with your new teeth and bam! You're back in business!
So happy to know that John is a part of band again! We are really blessed to have him alive...he is one of the best guitarist in the world! John inspired me to play a guitar, to not afraid of being myself... everybody having hard time sometimes, if he made it, we will made it too.. Love John! And thanks for this interview
Anthony's animosity towards John probably grew even after John left the band, and especially when Anthony realized what an actual loss it was, with One Hot Minute not being received as well as BSSM. Anthony had to learn to get over that for this to work again, and to be fair, he is a lot more humble here than he was in interviews during BSSM. That realization for Anthony would have hurt a lot, but it was something he had to go through if he wanted the band to continue. Whereas John was able to learn much earlier that having an ego is detrimental to one's creative process, even though that process almost killed him. It truly was so lucky for them and us fans that they both came out of it at basically the same time, otherwise we wouldn't have the music we have today. It's sounds cheesy, but the stars literally aligned for them to come together again.
@Kristin P As a teenager, Frusciante joined the band which he loved the most; he idolised Flea and AK looking up to them both as role models. They were older than him and should have known better than to allow him to become alienated. AK teased him mercilessly and the teasing became bullying. He was competitive and envious instead of being nurturing, supportive and kind. No wonder Fru suffered psychological damage and turned to pain killing drugs. He came through it building strength and determination, but my belief is he let his friends off lightly.
This is an amazing interview. The questions really push the boundaries but Anthony and John still try their best to answer. Rare to get such personal insights into the band's internal dynamics and real feelings.
I love that you can tell that there is so much love between the two of them, its like, sometimes falling out with someone can bring you closer in the end...you know because you get to appreciate the more fiery sides of one another... and if you manage to get back together, you respect each others boundaries more...or something, you know what I mean? this applies to all types of relationships.
Thx so much for share @Cenitri ! Really great time...period, (I just love this John) But damn, those themes The spell of "Lust and L-O-S-S xd & Flea's uncomfortable feels between rich people lol John was in a really good mood here. He also recovered mentally fairly quickly, it was good to see him like that, laughing pleasantly; Thank God! Can't wait the new album!!! 🙏🏻💯🎸🌶️✌🏻
Well once the first 3 minutes of the song pass, you've pretty much got the outro of the song which lasts a minute and a half. John was referring to that, I assume.
The segment at 21:35 where John is laughing is so precious it makes my heart hurt. What an angel. You can also still kinda see that he's the baby in the band and Anthony really tickles him.
Seems there was always tension between these 2 legends. I've been lucky enough to see them many times and you could sense it at live gigs towards the end of John's last stint. So glad he came back, the more music from this line up the better.
They just didn't seem to interact with each other. You could feel a tension between them. They are complete opposites character wise. Anthony is loud and expressive while John is very quiet and timid. I remember the last gig John played at Reading. It was a disaster John just seemed disinterested and wanting to go home. While Anthony seemed pissed off with him.
@@AllOuttaBubblegum123 oh man :/ i imagine john gets burnt out after a while . you're lucky you got to see them tho, i'm hoping to see them next year. without tension! lol
I was listening to By the Way album the day before it was announced that John had rejoined the band. And while I was listening to it I was thinking oh please let them get back together... Next day bingo!! True story 🙏♥️🎸🥰🙏
What a beautiful interview, and a great story of reconciliation. Chad not wanting drums on Road Trippin'...now that's a sign of a good drummer/ear...knowing when they're not even needed. Think I'm gon a play road trippin now 😆
John & Tony Flow are being very patient and generous to answer the best they could to questions that often comes from a very negative angle. "You need 4 years to make a brand new album" c'mon guy! You can see Anthony twitching at that point , with reason 😄. John has the best come back though "the recording took 3 weeks, that's very quick you know." That and "In the future we'll try to put out a record everyday" 🤣 I love this band so much!
It’s because there’s a huge language barrier. Obviously the questions don’t really translate as well. They’ve done a ton of interviews with this guy over the years, so clearly they aren’t unhappy with his questions.
I haven't watched all of this interview yet but to me this is what I would imagine marriage or relationship counselling to be like, ha... They have got through some heavy times as a band and with their friendship that now it seems like they're really trying to emanate unconditional love and I love that about the Chili Peppers!
God damn I love John Frusciante. He's been my role model since 1989. What a disaster 🤣 Seriously this man is so full of love...just naive af but still a beautiful soul who sees beauty everywhere and in everyone. We should all be so lucky to have friends like these
Hey he was no disaster and not naive. Communication is difficult for intuitive introverts. Very easily misinterpreted. It’s his failure to communicate, not the endless character defects unjustly ascribed to people like him (and me).
@@TheStarBlackit’s okay to admit that the dude was extremely out of it at this point in his life. The brain takes a lot of time to heal, and he had pushed his body and mind to the limit with his drug use. This interview is really not that far removed from the time he got sober. He still had a lot of mental hurdles to get through to get to the point he’s at today. Point being, yes he has meaningful ideas, but he was indeed babbling quite a bit during this video while trying to communicate them lol.
I feel bad for John being self conscious about his teeth at this time. He laughed at one point freely and you can see him remember to put his hand over his mouth.
Finally read Scar Tissue Anthony memoir...read it!! looking frwd to next year tour with John Back ..last time seen Chili's live with john was Mothers Milk tour LBC Circa 89,Chilis are red hot with John !
If you go to this channel and look a video of one year ago. It says John Frusciante in 1989. You're gonna see a pretty beautiful man. OMG he was beautiful!!!
Anthony keeps taking such deep breaths hahaha. It looks like torture for him. And no doubt that would be a tough conversation to have, much less with a camera in your face. Props to him for riding it out and being patient. A younger version of himself might have been more aggressive or agitated (I know I would have been when I was younger if a journalist had been pressing us like that).
I think it's probably one of those things where it's like, even though John chose to leave the band, Dave took his place. Kind of like if you choose to leave a relationship with someone you care about and they move on and find someone else, it'll make you uncomfortable seeing that person in what was "your" place. A bit of jealousy, in a sense, but nothing unhealthy or petty. Just a natural, human kinda thing.
@@axemansjazz6670yeah, that's what I've been thinking, that's why the look on his face looks like he's feeling offended at the moment they're talking about Dave. I like your thoughts on it though, very nicely put! :)
