in scar tissue anthony described this time well. the touching thing i remember when anthony asked him what he needed and he said - sandwich with mustard. and anthony kept bringing them for him every day.
@@lrn_news9171 I disagree. Who's to say a junkie on the street isn't just as intelligent and articulate? We are all just humans trying to survive this crazy ride.
John is brave for having to have been that role model to the rest of the world but not only for the drugs but for being a human being. theres more to a human being than just being, what he says should be common knowledge. you can connect with him for many things, music, guitar, drugs, but i connect with him from a human being. glad we didnt lose him. we need more peopple like him.
Drug addiction is an illness......I am in awe of anyone who recovers from it on any level, because it so incredibly hard. To see john in these videos and to see him now....should be an inspiration to all who struggle with everyday life.
It was so painful seeing him this way. He lost his friend River Phoenix to an OD.....and instead of cleaning up....he dove deeper and deeper. So Happy he found his way out of that hole
It doesn't matter, I don't think of him of anything less then a good sport, great Guy and much respect to him for giving us free guitar lessons. Nobody does that. I think he's one of the best guitarists around and an a great person!

Wow. Watch the video for Can't Stop (He said during the recording of By The Way he was the happiest he's ever been) and then this one, it's like night and day. Different person.
@ThePencilCracker wow, it's unbelievable that john actually got through this, what a great story, heroin addiction is no joke I can't even begin to comprehend the torture he went through to get off that drug.
Cheers for your reply, I wondered about mental illness when i heard him talk about the spirits that spoke to him when he used heroine and the fact he says he has real conversations with his cats. Otherwise, he does make a lot of sense, even more so now that his mind is clear of heroine etc. Listening to john really opens my mind, he is a pioneer exploring the depths of the human condition through music and dimensions unseen. I am a student nurse doing mental health currently. thank you :-)
Damn... Its amazing to see how even gods like john have been through hell. Im so glad he went to rehab. Otherwise the RHCP would not have been the same.
Imagine if he had never used drugs to enhance his creativity. I agree he doesn't appear to be in great shape physically; however, for my money he definitely had his mind and presence about himself. One can easily sense just how truly aware he is. It’s apparent to me that he could have chosen a number of things to devote his energy to, anything he wanted to be; I’m glad he chose music and guitar.
Man. It doesn't even look like him. I would have an incredibly hard time watching this not knowing that he would turn into the person/musician he is today.
@retroguy02 the VPRO is a dutch broadcasting station. VPRO stands for Vrije Protestantse Radio Omroep (Free Protestant Radio Broadcasting Station), a bit of a misleading name which hasn't been changed since the 1960s. After the Netherlands secularizated the VPRO began to make arty and musically focussed broadcastings!
Oh my god that's a miracle ! When i see him during this interview and now .. he's an other man today i can't believe it =( John came back from very far he's a god !
I bet this is painful for him to watch. Got to hand it to him though, he got his shit together. He's possibly one of the most talented guitarists of my generation and it would have been a real shame to have lost him to some smack.
the most spiritually beautiful person without even realising it himself. i find him a guilty pleasure, i shouldn't like watching tho, maybe even be scared by him yet he fascinates me. the beauty yet ugliness of drugs enrolled into one.
niandra lades was recorded during bssm recording, but usually just a t-shirt was written during his touring with the band, which was one of the worst moment of his life
When he says "your role model, who you look up to, when they kick you in the thigh" Is he referring to when Anthony kicked him onstage in 1992 during their SNL performance?
2:21 it’s too bad that in a way it’s Anthony who’s to blame for putting John in this state. If it wasn’t for his egotistical bullying of John maybe he would’ve kept the drug use a purely recreational thing, like how Kiedis was for the most part able to keep it together be a part of the band.
Who would of thought at the time that John Frusciante would pull himself out of this? When I first saw this I thought he was gonna be dead within a few months, no doubt about it. But he cleaned himself up and put out some more great music with RHCP. Im glad he did...
I think he was referring more to being un afraid of being more women like style or doing things men would generally consider strange or gay without it bothering him rather embraceing and loving it, just being alive now and not thinking of consequences or caring what other people thought just happy.
looks like hes been awake for a week. I'm glad he didn't die. Some people can control drugs but for most it ends up controlling you. I'm done with them . I'm twenty five and its not cool or fun at all. Having a family seems like the coolest thing you can do in life. Rock on people
@ellomyloverperrycarr i was thinking the same thing,he's messed up but he's baring his soul and his true feelings that most people never have the guts to expose.instead of going to school and shooting people John turned to music, thank God he did.glad he's still with us.
I agree with everything that he said except what he said about being smart. Being smart is not memorizing something and it also isn't about "being able to trip out".
Hardcore addicts always feel like they are being so poetic and deep and this is glorified by their fans. Unfortunately looking back it’s just kind of sad and pathetic. I don’t mean that in an insulting way, just reality.
@kittenkilla123 He WASN'T feeling sorry for himself - that's the astonishing thing about this interview. He's defiant and convinced that he's on the right track. It's fascinating.
Hillel Slovak dies of a drug overdose, so to replace him they got another guitarist who had a massive addiction himself and could overdose at any time.
Sect paradox of life- As he may appear as a corpse... As there are many that appear "healthy".... Yet when their mind is an embodiment of which his John's body may project... That is what is truly disgusting... This is reality, I find this beautiful; his body is merely a metaphorical transportation fleshanism of his true energy and spirit... And as he may appear so destroyed he remains composed of such and projects, raw refined, wretched beauties.
