Brian Jones said that to Dick Clark on AB about Mick Jagger being a sex symbol for the men. Anthony K. Is so smitten by her he totally embarrassed himself. He's a dunce and Flea isn't. Fleas the star in this band. Anthony K. Is exhausting. Even Flea is annoyed by his band mates ego. Dudes a jerk.
When asked what her least favourite interview was: “The Red Hot Chili Peppers, because they were really crass on camera, swore a lot, appeared to be real troublemakers and then as soon as the cameras stopped rolling they would apologize and say ‘Are we pushing it too much? Should we tone it down a little?’ They were just putting on an act. They were my least favourite because they were faking the cool.”
@@pachucodreamsLol, it doesn't mean they were posers; do you understand that *most* bands are entertainers first? It's also possible she said that because of the backlash Anthony got for openly flirting with her. She obviously liked him, and it would be understandable she might say "yeah, it was just a put-on" in order to stop all the people bugging her about the interaction.
When 'Much Music' hit the airwaves, all Canadian teen boys suddenly fell in love with Erica. Professionally, she was so amazing in every way: well researched, genuinely interested in what she was asking and always found a way to connect at a more human level. As someone else stated here, she was so natural.
I forgot to say, Erica Ehm, you are perhaps among the best interviewers I've ever seen. Informed, smooth, unflappable, and in control 100% of the time. Excellent work. And big respect, Erica, for not allowing Anthony to touch you. What a punk. Great job, Erica. JAH BLESS!!
Why are you addressing Erica? this is not her channel and she is 62 years old now and likely doesnt watch youtube and doesnt give a f*ck about flea and keidis or this interview from 35 years ago.
@@EricaEhmseriously. I was quite young back at this time but man, in retrospect all the interviews I remember and have seen again since… you are fantastic and i think the world misses this level of tact and dedication and everything. And Jesus Christ you handled that unwanted kiss better than anyone should have to. I guess it was a “different time” but i can see your eyes. It was no different. Unwanted advances… from rockstars who clearly haven’t thought for a second you may seriously have a problem with it or have a husband or just any thought whatsoever. Yikes. I don’t know why people act like the effect is any different. Were people more like that back then? Maybe. Did it mean it didn’t suck just the same? No. My heart literally sank for you right after you said “back off baby” and you can clearly see you realize he won’t and then the defeat. Ugh. I have seen those eyes way too many times. Not from my actions thank god, but way too many. If I could have reached through time i would smack the shit out of those boys through my screen here. But you did wonderful. Always. And phenomenal dodge of those few awful questions.
canadians tended to be across the board. much better and much more professional, factual than american trash magazines and Music TV back then and especially now. Like Nardwaur, he had his little charachter he played but did amazing interviews with amazing questions and stories hes heard about the band and or its members that would even blow their fucking minds.
Its amazing that we are being able to watch all this ammount of priceless stuff. We had mtv in brazil, but it had its own production and foreign material did not get through, thanks mate!
The kiss portrayed a lot about Anthony, his assumption that she wanted it, and she said no multiple times, and he just kept on as if she wanted it. It says a lot.
@@bjeffrey1863 I 1,000% agree that the world has gone soft & I miss satire cause its the greatest form of comedy- but this ain't it. The woman is trying to do her job & they seem to only want to sabotage her efforts. This ain't political incorrectness, its borderline bullying. There's a difference.
@@bjeffrey1863Baloney! Stop excusing jerks who act very poorly toward a young tv personality who is only trying to make a name for herself. Sorry to be so blunt but I call em as I see em!
They were still kids. Look how young they look. They had just made the transition from underground breakout band with a couple of hits to releasing one of the biggest albums of the decade where every single song was a total banger and becoming international superstars. It was the most creative part of their careers. Every single song on Blood Sugar Sex Magik was a total banger. Not to make excuses but they were very young and on top of the world!
They were young boys filled with testosterone sitting in front of a very beautiful young lady,of course they were gonna act like fools…that’s what we do😂
I knew these guys at Fairfax in the eighties. Anthony was very arrogant, but also already pretty messed up . After decades of hard drug use, homelessness, and dizens of overdoses, he finally humbled himself and took the help. I think hes changed a lot, but he will always have that rock star confidence that can make him seem a little condescending.
Anthony still has unresolved issues. I know from fact (the ladies have receipts) that in Brazil, the band's photographer, David Mushegain, contacted "Instagram models", those young ladies had "family passes" to the shows and we're hanging out at the hotel. Of course some of them posted the photos on their social, without Anthony but thanking him and David. Because he can't go around forcing himself to kiss a woman on the check these days, that could get him in real legal trouble or even physical harm from fans that would take that as a consent sign. That's why he was with bodyguards in Brazil, people were chasing them everywhere. In my country none of this happened, he went with David to do a photoshoot in the General Cemetery. I don't think any fan met him there. They didn't "scout" ladies here. I don't know about Argentina.
Erica Ehm was a top notch interviewer and personality. I have such great memories of this era in Toronto with Much Music, she was very influential - a household name, Really, when I think about this period of music in Toronto, her and Michael Williams, Steve Anthony Monika Deol and of course Master T! are as part of the music scene as the music itself. I'm so glad I got to live through this time period.
I discovered her by accident a couple of years ago and was instantly smitten. I think I've watched every one of her Much Music interviews on RU-vid. She's gorgeous, intelligent, funny - if I'd been born in Canada or she'd been broadcasting in Ireland, I'd definitely have been tuned in every day! Plus, she did the best Kurt Cobain interview I've ever seen.
I THINK he’s saying that he wouldn’t do something for her but for anyone else he would do it for half the price. Implying that even less of a reward is better than working with her. That he’d take less just to not do something for her. But it is confusing, i agree lmao.
@@Danceeagle9725 you don’t need to try too hard to imagine since Kiedis himself wrote about his sexual relationship with a 14-year-old Catholic school girl when he was 23 at the time. And after he learned her age, he went and did it again 🤢
I met the interviewer, MuchMusic VJ Erica Ehm with her kids on Queen Street, right in front of the erstwhile Much headquarters. She was telling her kids about the old days. She did a crucial interview with Kurt Cobain in late '93. Anyway, she's super cool in person. Her kids were cool too. Canadian treasure, Erica Ehm.
@@evanburgess8428Well it was a pretty silly claim. He said she said if he didn't kiss her then she wouldn't go see their show, but then didn't want to be kissed? Doesn't add up.
@@NyQuilDonut Yes it adds up fine, which is why people who get birthday presents still act surprised despite having the same birthday every year. We will never know what actually happened, but this was about 30 years ago, social conventions were 100% different to today, and women were more of the opinion of "appearing" hard to get. The scenario "Make me look good and desirable to my friends!" was 100% likely back then. LIterally anyone alive back then would have noticed the differences over the years. The fact remains my claim is far more likely because... it is 30 years ago and she never said anything to contradict what he said. Of course, you can live in your fantasy world where everything is a crime according to imaginary conventions/laws 30 years in the future. And how do you square the circle of the fact he did this "joking" display, then she asked about his dick? Are you just completely stupid? Imagine you tried to kiss a girl because she had flirted with you, then she "doesn´t leave" but afterwards asked you how your dick is doing? Would this make you go "Ah, she clearly doesn´t like me!!!" or would you think "Hmm, she seems to be playful." There is a very odd set of people who seem to believe women aren´t sexually aggressive, and she clearly was, but all you see is a video of her deleted out of it and "an innocent victim" inserted. Absolutely stupid. There is nothing more stupid than people like you who don´t even understand the run time of these shows back then (It ended on time) and the fact VJs were renowned for trying to stage incidents of "wild behaviour" to pull in ratings. If you can´t accept she egged him on then you must be living in a dream world, she even talked about how girls must be ripping his clothes off. You dumb.
Blood Sugar was an awesome album. Saw them at Irvine Meadows in '92 and it's still the best concert I've even been to. It was day one of Lollapalooza and they came out in just their socks....not on their feet.
She suffered under some serious disrespect from the music "community" and "fans" back in the day. I remember a friend, a bartender at the Diamond, later the Phoenix, telling me of a night the crowd had her in tears. A patently untrue, unfair and undeserved characterization as a pretty airhead. Misogyny to the nth degree. Despicable.
I'm sure many women, even as late as the early 2000s, were expected to EXUDE some degree of sexuality by the producers. Especially, with musicians. In this interview, there is a slight "acceptance" of it on her part. I don't know that it was genuine, or a part of her thinking "this is a shitty part of my job". Not necessarily to flirt with Anthony Keidis, but to be objectified in any way. It's terrible that this was, and I'm sure still is, a part of being a journalist for a woman. I think all 3 of them understood that their conversation was a "gig". But, I'm sure an interview with Motley Crue was much more disgusting. Young male celebrities who are a sex symbol of some degree must be a drag for professional women to have to deal with, for the most part. Not as many would understand the situation and think to make some amount of "light" with it. The Chili Peppers are amazing true human beings. I can't imagine the obstacles that come with being such, AND being famous. Especially at that age.
One thing I always noticed was that every female presenter of a rock/metal show would always get criticized or extremely sexualized by the viewers. Same thing happened with Vanessa from Headbangers Ball... Female musicians don't have it any easy either. The rock/metal community was always misogynistic, unfortunately
@@s.l.s.l.1405 she was VERY good. Never made it awkward and knew how to get out of questions without stopping. If anything Her beauty is what made the guys talk so well with her.
Are you people blind?? She was friends with them and joking around. I’m starting to think the majority of these comments are from ppl who learned social skills from RU-vid videos
@@ShinyFlakesShinyFlakes THIS. (although probably the last bit at 14 minutes in she probably could have done without. That went a bit far and the offscreen bosses were getting ticked. But I don't see her as feeling anything about this besides the opposite of what regret is :) )
Anthony really behaved like a prick, kissing her when she had expressly refused, asking her about the color of her underwear etc… Flea was less so, but he didn’t try to stop Anthony and he also behaved like a prick in the end. That’s difficult to see after Me Too, one can only hope that these guys have matured a little. The interviewer still manages to act professionally and make her interview. Respect to her!
what she is saying is one thing, and what her body language is saying is another thing. she refused with words because of her job, but she was all bubbly and smiling at the same time.
@@loonaya So « she said no but she really meant yes? » When a woman says no, it means no, no matter what men and their fantasy want to hear. I see a young woman who is too shy and embarrassed for giving him the slapping he deserves. You seem to be blaming her for not knowing exactly how to react, instead of blaming him for acting like a pig.
Bro its flirting. They say no sometimes but it actually means try harder. They like the attention if ur the guy they are interested in. Its hard to figure out how to read them sometimes but this is a thing.@julienrp7511
The la's were interviewed by this great lady about 2 years previously and they did an amazing acoustic version of timeless melody and they were super respectful and Gentlemen. She looked very intrigued by the two Englishmen
I'd forgotten how cute Erica Ehm was and I miss those interviews of Toronto's 'MuchMusic'. She reminds me of a girl I knew in college who looked very similar and who was very funny and outgoing and they both had a kind of Marisa Tomei-like quality in appearance. :)
Absolutely. It wont shock me when these guys do eventually have all kinds of claims come against them. I mean the creep even admitted to sex with a minor...AFTER HE KNEW HER AGE! he is a scum bag.
Back in 1989....I was Student Council Pres of my high school, and we ordered a Much Music Dance Party w Erica Ehm. After the show, she was chatting with a bunch of us, and she was really sweet. And of course, Erica is such a cutie...and I had a HUGE crush on her...I was a bit drunk, so I asked her if I could have an autograph and a little kiss.....her reply?? "Yea, sure buddy...*eye roll* uhhhhh nooo...no way am I kissing a high school kid" after a bit of awkward laughter....I said...Maybe I can call you in about 15 years?? Her reply....I'll call you.ok?? I never got that phone call...ohhh well...I tried In all seriousness though...Erica was a great host and put on a great dance party. Really cool and funny and didn't mind chatting up all the high schoolers who wanted to meet her.
@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar Those were the days where softcore ruled and just pretty chicks like Erica in tight jeans and that sultry voice left much to the imagination. Now with a click of a button you can see everything. Took away that mystique.
It’s funny because before I became a massive RHCP fan Rush was my favourite band (probably because my dad liked them and we are Canadian) and what i immediately understood was how animalistic these guys were by comparison and that really spoke to my teenage self
Yea I was a big fan in the 90s and then just kind of quit listening. I got on drugs pretty bad and hadn't seen or heard RHCP since " Roller Coaster". This past year I was somewhere and heard Anthony's voice on a TV , it was the " Black Summer" video and I couldn't believe his transformation lol. The somewhat of a mullet and the mustache makes him look completely different ( also 20 plus years) but I still like them just as much as back then and I have a ton of stuff to new stuff to listen to but even the older stuff never gets old to me.
@Joaquin Diego I know nothing about that lol. Hopefully your not being serious but if he is I guess your right, there's nothing wrong with it. I know I heard a recent interview he was in and he was talking slightly feminine.
haha i watched this live over 30 years ago when it was broadcast! Haven't seen it again until now! I was a Muchmusic addict until the mid-1990s. Flea is as I remember him, this guy that just...well...I wouldn't want to have socialized much with.
There was a book on Much Music a few years ago where the old VJs were interviewed. They dished the dirt of which bands/artists were the worst interviews. The women said KISS (Gene and Paul) were total pigs. Lou Reed, Bryan Adams, and Guns and Roses were total A-holes. I think Red Hot Chili Peppers were mentioned too.
Bryan Adams dated a friend's daughter when he was in his teens and she said she couldn't stand him. Arrogant, rude, egotistical are some of the words she used to describe him.
As teens, we looked up to guys in rock bands as if they were prophets, hanging on every word. Now in my late 40s, I look at interviews like this and just see regular guys in their 20s who happened to be good rock musicians. Btw, that interviewer is a sweetheart. Wonder what became of her?
@JoKro lol, what an unhinged take. Your aggressive response to my innocuous comment is not my problem, it’s your problem and an indictment on how you were raised. Honor your caregivers better, do better. Get help, son.
It's crazy how time shifts that perspective, isn't it? Especially having been in bands when I was in my 20's and very early 30's, I look back on this and see so much of that same attitude I used to have about life and music and everything in between.
Same here, wasnt much into the chili peppers but the bands in the 90s I was into I was obsessed with! Now I'm 39, and I cant get into any music! The new stuff is all pop garbage and I'm tired of the old stuff .. sucks because music used to be my savior as a kid
@@izzydeadyet7336 I can’t stand this take. I’m 30 so I’m. It that far behind you. If you can’t find new music you like, you’re straight up not looking for new music. Some of the best rock and roll I’ve ever heard is happening right now. I don’t know how you’re missing it but do better and quit living in the past man. You’re backing yourself in a corner and pretty soon you’re just gonna be another “back in my day” guy you grew up hating.
I knew a guy just like Flea at a homeless shelter I stayed at once. Same look, voice, mannerisms, the works. Wow. What a trip. I guess it is true what they say about we all have a doppelganger somewhere out there.
Reminds me of grade school when little boys would give little girls a hard time because they had a crush on them. This is when RHCP hit mainstreem. Erica handled these clowns like a pro.
Anthony was trying WAAAYYYY too hard to impress that poor girl! She wasn't having any of it. Good for her! He flirted his way through the entire interview. What a bad boy!
She handled herself so well. They did get out of line. It would be interesting to have seen if she started discussing just how long they lasted and she’d have rated their abilities and such. Turned the tables on them and put them in the hot seat
@@La_br00tal_mija true but she was simply trying to play along and not seem as phased about them trying to call her out and make her uncomfortable and embarrass her in public television…it’s not quite the same. Which is why I was inferring it would have been interesting to see if she would have then embarrassed them how they would have taken just as well as she did
Erica was amazing - LOVED her on Muchmusic. Anthony is a pedo creep - I wouldn't want him touching me either. Him talking about sexual energy makes me want to vomit.
My band supported them in the UK in Manchester and London Electric Ballroom. Hillel was still alive, he was the only one who had a drink with us. I think that may've upset their manager as he threatened to punch our mate Dave Darling. Manchester there were maybe 250 people in the audience. London was sold out. They were jaw droppingly good, on the Uplift Mofo Party Plan tour.
Uplift Mofo is their pinnacle, the other stuff after Mother's Milk was regurgitation, if John wasn't such an enormous fan, they would've just splintered, that said, Flea, Navarro as session guys with Alanis, Anthony probably would've become an actor who released music, they remained relevant cuz of John and John's respect for Hillel is why he joined, as much as I like Mike Patton, even Patton would agree that the Chili Peppers from 84-88 were The Band (Megadeth/Metallica 84-88 were the Other Bands] pushing the sonic sound and Ministry's Stigmata)[and Rick Rubin's 1986 Beastie/RUNDMC/Slayer), The World Band, metal, punk, thrash, comedy and obviously funk. Knock Me Down gave way to all that crap on the Rick Rubin album. Higher Ground is an incredible cover, Nobody Weird Like Me almost anticipates Dave Navarro joining (the middle Jane's-y part). the 90s before computers made it easier to sound "Professional" computers are only good to make breakcore, hence John and Aaron and Chris' Speedealer Moms
@@ConstantContext You're certainly allowed to claim that for 'you' personally and subjectively that Uplift Mofo Party Plan was their pinnacle, but I think you'd encounter a lot of resistance from the majority who consider Blood Sugar Sex Magic to objectively be their magnum opus (even if you don't care for it and disagree).
"Do you know how many letters I'm gonna get?" Ah, times have changed. She may have gotten letters then, but now everyone can read those letters immediately.
