John was trapped in a blues nightmare...he's a funk rock guitarist who is super creative - and you basically make him play 12 bar blues rythm for the entire interview...nice
It’s been around for years. I saw this ages ago, but I am so happy it’s making the rounds again. Three guitar legends in an age lacking real musicianship. It’s beautiful.
Derek Trucks plays guitar like a soul singer. John Mayer can play blues jazz style like a virtuoso. John Frusciante can rock out and funk with amazing melodies.
@@theyrinthewalls There was nothing "weak" about the licks he played here at all... He obviously prefers the more grimy blues playing of someone like Hendrix than the clean bends and vibratos of BB King. It doesn't mean that one is necessarily weaker than the other...
This comment is 9 years old, but the internet is infinite and you might even get to come back tot this video somewhat fresh. With that said, i think what John mayer says afterwards is quite humble, saying that the slide can get infinitely more sounds than he can
I pretty much think John was pretty amazed at how could he play like that with a slide. He also has slide solos like Scar Tissue and Soul To Squeeze, so he surely knows how hard it is and knows what Derek was doing right there is practically impossible
Frusciante is amazing, and I'm not hating, but to say what you just said when Derek Trucks is in the room... You must be out of your fucking mind (or just not savvy). And I don't think Frusciante would disagree. Trucks was 27 here... and already arguably the greatest slide player of all time. Seriously, don't take it from me. Fast forward to 3:08 and listen for yourself. Normal slide guitarists do NOT sound like that. And take a look at Frusciante's reaction where he stops playing and just watches. John Frusciante is one of my all-time favorites, but he is definitely NOT way above Derek Trucks... or anywhere even close.
I hate it when people start hailing and overrating John Frusciante, the world really doesn't move around him nor around an opinion about him. He said he doesn't want to be like a god up on a piedestal himself... This is the kind of people that should chill.
Derek Trucks can just show up at a photoshoot, plug in, and get a tone that most would die for. What an absolute monster. Props to all three of these great players.
2:20 John Frusciante is so recognizable. What the other two are playing is more technical and complicated but I still like John Frusciante's unique style the most.
In John Frusciante’s playing, he’s influenced by so many genres. The other two are mainly blues players, although masters of it. This is why for me JF is 21st century’s goat!
john mayer is actually an incredible player. you might not like his pop songs but check out the john mayer trio, he's totally underrated as a guitarist
@@cosmogamer9914 I agree. He's so talented, but there's something about him that is just so powerfully uncool. Same with Joe Bonamassa. It shouldn't matter, but it does 😂
Thank you very much for posting this video! John is absolutely the most incredible guitarist I have ever had the privilege of witnessing play live. Ace Mr Rhodes Tracii Guns there all incredible in there own styles but my opinion, The way John improvise s his solos the loops the triads the Hendrix mixed with the slight Page style, the vintage tube amp crunch sound value's but most of all the man shares the feelings that come from his soul through that beautiful old Fender actually brings tears to my eyes damn! Sorry for the long response brings back awesome 👍 memories!
Mayer is the outlier here. He has everything you want and more while trucks is stuck in the he same slide world. They are both 2 leagues above frusciante
The 2 Johns are my favorite guitar players of all time, but I think they can’t be more different persons. Very interesting to see them in the same room.
It is not an offense! I'm just never understood how is it possible that someone who loves Frusciante likes Mayer too? The two people are so different, and not just in style... I think Mayer is an arrogant prick....sorry! (It's just my personal opinion)
@@alexnagy2044 well you for sure like artist, sport stars or actors that are awful people in secret, or is not that much well know. You can separate art from the artist
@@StanAlter Ok, subjektiv. That doesn't mean they're not real artists tho. Mayer got a great voice as well, not a big fan off his work - but holy fuck, can he play the blues
@@asfgsify John Mayer is a douchebag and he pretty much just copies older black jazz and blues players. I've watched many interviews and he's really arrogant. Perfect example of someone whos success came too easy. I hate to say white privilege but he's the poster boy for white privilege.
I know with social media, there’s been a ton of players to gain loyal fan bases and reach certain stardom. Mateus Asato being one of them. But these 3 here truly are the only ones we got on a mainstream level as guitar heroes.
Yep, he wouldn't be nearly as humble and actually show that he is more technical than both of them. Skip to 2 minutes in this video and look how technical Frusciante can be. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5pnkzgIaf6c.html
I’d really enjoy to see Frusciante and Trucks do an album together. Both of them are humble enough to perceive and appreciate each other’s talent. Imagine the mind blowing music too hot for streaming..
Mayer y Frusciante dos de mis guitarristas favoritos. Nunca supe hasta ahora que los habian juntado y jamás me lo hubiese imaginado. Ambos con dos personalidades y forma de tocar muy diferente.
The 12 people who downvoted this video knew they were going to downvote before even watching this. How can you click on a JF, JM, DT jam/interview and get the AWESOME content in this video and then hate it? My only complaint is this: -- where's the rest of it? Thx for posting, great video
Stew B John Meyer is sick but not a genius sorry. Gifted hands and clean as fuck but hasn’t brought much innovation into the genre :/ Just pointing out really
Killian Paul true he hasn’t innovated much but i was just stating facts. But I mean I’d say Neon was hella innovative, releasing that in 2000 is crazy. That style wasn’t really a thing back then. But regardless hes hellaaaaaa more technical than frusciante
Very kool. May we have a version with the interview removed? I don't want to take anything away from the interview, I want to hear what these fellows have to say, and I don't care about who the better player is. We don't see nearly enough simple jams on RU-vid and this is a very good one.
But to most guitar players he's barely above average.. I love chili peppers but come on. This video doesn't give it justice. JM and DT are a few levels above
