The rests are leftovers from Niandra LaDes, recorded during various time frames during the writing and recording process for Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Some songs were recorded while he was clean, but he released it while he was deep into his addictions. Smile From The Streets You Hold was recorded between 1988 - 1996.
