I was a young teenager during these launches. The networks carried them all. I played hooky for all of them. These were great times for America.

John Glenn's flight was delayed a number of times by either technical problems or the weather.I don't remember how many times Glenn got in that Mercury capsule only to have the flight scrubbed.Originally set for December 20,1961,he finally got to go on February 20,1962.It was all worth it.

Back then in the NASA's early space program even with all the technology at their disposal and careful checks and re checks it was a risky venture. Especially in the modified Atlas Agena/Centaur rocket booster. Much respect and Godspeed John Glenn. An American hero in more ways than one. And a distinguished Ohio State Senator. A great American hero!

All of these early astronauts in the Mercury program had to be just the right combination of brave and crazy. “What, you wanna strap me to the top of an ICBM and send me into outer space? Sure, let’s go!”

Wow;......Even the Atlas rocket, puny compared to the Saturn 5, looks pretty big in that last shot.

Actually Project Orion (along with the moon return and Mars missions) were cancelled last year due to funding cuts. New heavy lifters are still in development with possible manned asteroid missions slated for 2020 - 2030. Private industry is making serious strides as well. Our future as a space-faring species remains secure, if slightly delayed.

Basically yes - one that apparently stemmed from a short in an MC control panel rather than anything on board the spacecraft.

@irish89055 True, though it's also worth considering, as others have suggested, that had Shepard launched in March of 61 as originally planned (a final chimp test was substituted instead), there might never have been an Apollo program, the race having been won. (In full disclosure I've often heard this theory but have never accepted it. President Kennedy might have delayed Apollo but we still would have gone, just as we'll eventually return to the moon and go on to Mars. Eventually.)

You could sell it back then! With everything coming to life these days, it would be nice for once to tell the truth. No disrespect to Mr. Glenn he had to take a huge secret to his grave. He can see lignts from space? And what a beautiful shot him turning through space. How did that happen? Today's technology doesn't have that sharp picture. Ground Control to Major Tom, put your green screen up and turn your cameras on!! The thrust that fast would definitely look a lot different than what you showed America! There's MILLIONS of people like me that say, Not buying The Truman Show anymore!!!! 😎
