That (turn for home), was when John Henry would show what he was all about... the willingness to work hard for the win ! Wow.. he was really something to see!

Thanks BC! It never gets old seeing the Living Legend race. Going down the stretch...once he had his sights on the other horse...kicked into gear! Look at how happy he looks finishing this race :-) Love you John~John!!

he beat lemhi gold, who had just romped in the Marlboro Cup and JCGC and was named the top handicap horse that year.

John Henry was purchased for $1,100. Oats and hay cost more than that. What a horse! The people's champion!

He won that for fun,he had his ears pricked,he did it easy,man what a horse.

It does need to be noted Lemhi Gold's Jockey Club Gold Cup was the one that was marred by a four-horse spill that sadly claimed the lives of Timely Writer (for whom it was supposed to be his last race before retirement) and Johnny Dance. Really one of the sadder moments of the sport. If I'm not mistaken, the track announcer at that time in the fall at Santa Anita (Oak Tree meet) was Alan Budhacal because Dave Johnson was busy with The Meadowlands in the fall then.
