John Hiatt is Jerry Seinfeld meets Bob Dylan. In other words, he's my hero.

Not only can this man write a damn good song, but his banter is fantastic - all around great performer - he’ll always be one of my favorites.

I heard John Hiatt perform from a radio station studio one time, and he played something we'd never heard before. The radio dude asked him how many other songs he had written but never performed or recorded. "I don't know - ...three hundred?"

My newly discovered love of all things "John Prine" brought me here. This is my music and I'm wondering what in the hell was I doing in 1989 that caused me to miss it!!!

BRAVO John! Folks would be in shock and awe if they knew how many tunes John Hiatt has written that other artists have recorded. He's brilliant as are all the guys on stage in this video.

Jesus H. Christmas. Thanks RU-vid. Where I live and in my feed my favourite muso since late 1987 was a mystery to Australians. The Slow Turning Guy who sounded black and looked white. I bought mysterious black import Vinyl. Mysterious black import CDs. Not very mysterious tickets to the Melbourne Concert Hall where he supported Robert Cray's Strong Persuader tour, and got a standing ovation from an audience that started leaving just after the title track by the headliner. I left after three songs. Cray was drunk or stoned. The whole concert hall was there to see the so called 'support act', Mister J. Hiatt, and he was brilliant. I loved every minute of Mr. Hiatt, and was disappointed that Mr. Cray let us all down....I was a fan of his as well, but Hiatt was the man in one of the biggest concert halls in the world that night. The support to the support was better than Cray that night. Peter Wells from Rose Tattoo, going full on rockabilly rebel. I'm still slappin' a double bass, 30 odd years later..........

Man,I always love coming back to this little part of the internet. For me, simply one of the greatest performances ever. Thanks mbroders, for keeping this one going. Absolutely brilliant.

Jim Cim. I totally agree! I loves me some Springsteen and Newman and all the other wonderful songwriters. John has for some stupid reason, been FAR overlooked or passed by and UNDER RECONGNIZED. He is amazing in every sense of the word. He is my heart and soul. Truly. Thank you for knowing this fact. :)

I have just come upon this piece, I read the title and a handful of comments, but I have not yet listened to the song. I rolled those comments and that title around in my head for a few moments and it sounds like this guy might have been peeking in my windows are reading my --- stuff. Maybe another time. Interesting that when Hiatt talks about "that dark pressure to write a hit song," Prine and Ely shuffle nervously in their seats while Clark is as still and steady as a rock. Forget the central role played by the male sex organ in this song, that balance between art and commerce is the big taboo here. Great though it is i'm guessing this song didn't make a heap of money for anyone but what fantastic art. Love all these guys to bits. Esp, Prine n Clarke.

Met both Hiatt and Jackson Browne at an after concert party in Charlotte many years ago. Hiatt was funny happy dude who also just happens to be a heck of a poet.

This was recorded at the Bluebird Cafe in NashVegas for Tin Pan South. This first aired on 'Coast to Coast' on Showtime. Herbie Hancock was the host. I used to have this on VHS back in the day. I've played on that stage a few times. It's a small world.

The best. The others (also great of course) kind of drifting off there after the intro until he got into the "meat" of the song. Press it Print It Ship It. LOL I'm a huge fan seen him more times than I can count and never heard this.
