John Nicholson Ireland (13 August 1879 - 12 June 1962) was an English composer and teacher of music. The majority of his output consists of piano miniatures and of songs with piano. His best-known works include the short instrumental or orchestral work "The Holy Boy", a setting of the poem "Sea Fever" by John Masefield, a formerly much-played Piano Concerto, the hymn tune Love Unknown and the choral motet "Greater Love Hath No Man"

Used to sing this in my all boys grammar school chamber choir. Even now at 37 years old I still remember the goosebumps I used to get singing this as a treble at the top of my lungs, the bass, tenors and altos behind me all giving it their best and the organ 64’ pipes blasting away in some of the UKs most glorious cathedrals and all their acoustic! Incredible times!

Hauntingly beautiful - I sang this with my college chapel choir in the early 90's and it has stayed with me ever since x

I first discovered this anthem when I sang it with my choir just before lockdown. It is definitely one of my favourites, and I can hardly believe that I have only just come across this magnificent recording now. Thank you so much for sharing. Listening to this was phenomenal!

Of the many versions of this featured on RU-vid, this one makes subtle and beautiful use of tempo fluctuations indicated in the score. In others they can seem contrived or arbitrary, but here they feel like a natural response to the text, which is, I'm sure, what Ireland had in mind. The orchestral accompaniment adds grandeur to the whole, especially in the magnificent fanfares. Thanks for finding it and making it available to us.

well yeah, others may be amateur versus this is London Symphony Orchestra & Chorus lmao! But yes, this is gorgeously and sensitively done, to the highest caliber!

I used to sing this as a little boy (solo included)! I never realised what a stunning miniature masterpiece it is. I never heard it orchestrated before. All that brass! Definitely sounds like music for a coronation. Love the chord on "into his marvellous..." and is that Bryn Terfel singing?

Beautiful little work. I hope you upload more John Ireland. Did Cyril Scot ever come up in your plans? His symphonies would be great to see with scores.

Lovely, it's a shame he runs into one of the themes from Elgar's "The Apostles", written some eight years earlier, at 3.58

@@BruceXuHasADream Well, since technically the trumpets are playing an E and the Choir is coming in on a D, I think it doesn't count lol
