I think we all assumed Roddick was a dark horse at that years open given he had just come off an epic at Wimbledon and been in form for most of the year!
Andy was definitely still recovering emotionally from that ‘09 Wimbledon Final here. He said he came into this tournament with the most confidence he ever had, it’s just sad he ran out of gas here. But big props to Big John for taking advantage of a big win early in his career.
@@glutamin111 True, but I mean ran out of gas emotionally from Roddick. I believe he would have won this match if it weren't for the emotional scar left from the Wimbledon Final.
I think it was more of John Isner hitting big serves. I felt like Roddick was the better player, he just couldn't get past Isner's serves. This could have happened to any player
One of the best matches at the US Open. Andy had such a great chance of making it to the semis where Roger would have beaten him.🙏 Thanks for uploading this.
@@justallan5714 could be. But I'm visualizing myself as your average tennis pro and this guy 7' tall but shredded, not skinny, walks out on court with a known 150+ serve. After having the racket torn out of my hand once or twice, I think I might go "ah, sorry.. I just remembered, I have a dentist appointment..."
@@davidluck1678 Serve is not everything, and that frame would not only be positive. It would be extremely difficult to handle 7 best of 5 matches in two weeks. Not only needing to keep his only weapon consistent but also to recover physically.
Some things just never change. Roddick again lost due to a very poor approach shot and a strangely delayed start to the net. Throughout his career, his timing and decision making on these shots was very questionable. He was not a good enough baseliner and quite honestly he was never a top class net player. All these losses to Federer were down to him being blasted with passing shots and the fact that simply put Roger was a better baseliner. Hell he was a better net player than him as well.
@@bringitonbaby I wouldn't say that the generation was dead, but these guys did not have the guts to be consistently the best. I would name two players. Davydenko and Nalbandian. The Russian was immense. That guy was playing PlayStation tennis. He took the ball absurdly early, but he never believed in himself. I remember him challenging the best players on his day. Great player, but he definitely could not match Federer and young Nadal's guts. Nalbandian. Another brilliant player. For me, he had more talant than Fed, but again, he could not be that consistent. But that guy could do anything with the ball. Another notable player here is Coria. Also an argentine. That guy choked however brutally. That final in 2004 just killed him. After that he lost the 2005 epic final in Rome and he was done. The game was in transition at the late 90s and in the first 10 years of the new millennium. The courts got considerably slow and players had to change from the old serve and volley on every third point basically. All of the players I mentioned did not have amazing serves as well.
Roddick would have had more success had he kept the play style that won him a GS and got him to world #1. That was utilizing his big serve with powerful groundstrokes from the back of the court. After 2004, he reverted to simply being a pusher with bad movement who possessed a big serve. His big, flat FH became just a heavy topspin FH which didn't trouble anybody. Before 2005, Federer actually had to fear Andy's power from the back of the court. He could usually diffuse it, but he had to work hard to it. From 2005 onward, Federer didn't have to worry about Roddick hurting him from the back of the court. You look at their matches from 2005 onward, and the match always seemed to be on Federer's racquet. And it seemed to be the case when anybody played him, rather it be Nadal or Djokovic or Nalbandian or Davydenko.
@@sensational.tennis8483 of course i wish, but in any case its a boring match come on. They serve too good to enjoy the match. And i respect both of them a lot, they have their weapons and they are using them as anyone of us would do, BUT for me it is a boring match
