John Kasich on Climate and Conservatives | Amanpour and Company

Many individual states have forged ahead with climate action -- even during periods of inaction or indecision by the federal government. As Biden’s ambitious pledge places the climate crisis at the top of the government's agenda, it’s perhaps hard to remember that the environment was once a bipartisan issue. Former Ohio Gov. John Kasich is committed to raising climate change awareness, and explains to Walter Isaacson how he thinks the GOP has lost its way in the thick of climate denial.

In a "we culture" we would also have healthcare for all, but that would be called communist or socialist. If "we" cared for the future of youth we would have continued education. If we cared about the we we would have fair pay " $15 an hour". If we cared about each other people would get the vaccine. Good luck USA

Exactly. It's not socialism/ communism.(just the lack of understanding those terms is infuriating) It's being a civilized human society looking to advance all of us into a decent future. If we keep going the way Republicans keep wanting us to go, we'll be living in a toxic world with the rich in their comfy habitats and the poor and middle class living in slums. It's only going to get worse

Kasich quickly in five sentences placed all of the hope is for climate change in large corporations like Exxon to do something. Combined with rebated caron taxes, he'd just hand more cash to corporations. He's cleverly tucked this into well reasoned clean air discussion and religious talk. So, he's 1/5 correct.

A good point, but the party of I has been the Republican party; the I's that have millions, the party that fell for Ayan Rand's philosophies and Milton Friedman's economic thinking. The party of smaller and ineffectual or corrupt government that would not properly regulate the fossil fuel industry for decades, leading to the crisis we are in. The We has to actually be Us with an end to political corruption by wealthy donors.

Why is Kasich even mentioning cancel culture? And then pointing to the left of the democratic party? It is the GOP that stupidly introduced the bogus argument about cancel culture to begin with. And even if such a stupid concept even exists, it is the GOP that lies, denies, and attempts to "cancel" any ideas or people that they object to or that does support their rabid and absurd statements and propaganda. If Stop the Steal is not cancel culture .. then what is? If local party censures of elected GOP who voted to impeach Chump is not cancel culture .. then what is? If Chump and 4 years of over 37,000 lies and misinformation is not cancel culture ... then what is? Admittedly Kasich, Cheney, and a small handful of republicans are much better than the masses of incompetent and corrupt hatemongers than comprise the GOP of today such as Chump, Cruz, Johnson, Greene, Jordan, Gaetz, Hawley, and the rest. But the GOP has no vision, no plans, no solutions, no leadership, no talent, and no path forward to even attempt to deal with the major issues facing the country and the majority of the citizens today. The GOP buzzword so called policy of fiscal responsibility, smaller government, deregulation, law and order, etc. are nothing but meaningless political rhetoric. Show us the plans and details of what any of that means .... they cannot because they have none. Even when the GOP is in power and control, they implement and accomplish none of those so called republican policies.

He makes a good point about centering the conversation more on current problems with air and water quality, instead of distant consequences like polar ice caps, and the need to think in terms of “we,” but it’s incredibly disingenuous to say that there’s been any lack of public pressure on climate issues or gun control. The problem is that politicians are funded by “special interests,” such as the fossil fuel industry and the gun lobby- which makes them unresponsive to the demands of the citizenry and has created a tribal polarized society because the political fights are drawn along culture war issues rather than economic and environmental policy. Kasich knows this, and favors corporate interests over those of workers or society at large. And “cancel culture” is neither a new nor a leftist phenomenon.

As an Independent I see the political bosses in BOTH parties playing the voters against each other with culture war issues while they work quietly behind the scenes to give the big corporate donors whatever they will pay for with some good old dark money contributions. Not surprising really, as this is how government actually works almost everywhere in the world. Pay to play. Young people, people of color, women, LGBTQ people, environmentalists, small business owners - you need to decide what your priorities are and register everyone who agrees with you to register and vote. Then pressure your preferred candidates to deliver on your wish list or lose your support. Be relentless. You can no longer afford to believe that politics is dirty and it doesn't really matter. It is extremely dirty and it matters a whole lot! If you don't get involved, you can bet that those who oppose your needs will...

I'm glad to see Mr. Kasich, a republican, support at least some gun control restrictions - but a red flag law that requires you go to court to take guns away from an individual suspected of posing a threat to themselves or others fails on the question of timeliness. There has to be communal mechanism in place that can respond much more quickly to a potential gun threat. Setting a court date can take months!

Couple of things, Kasich mentioned that we need new infrastructure so electricity can flow both ways. We will need some infrastructure but electricity Doesn’t care which way it is flowing. It could flow from your solar electric system and synchronize with the wave form of the utility grid no problem. The real problem is the utilities want electricity to flow from their facility to you, and for money to flow from you to them. Forever. They like that very much and don’t want to change. Second thing, Kasich said he doesn’t know why the republican party has gotten away from following the science. Of course he knows the reason is money$$. The Republicans don’t have a monopoly on greed but they are the biggest shareholders. The world needs to start building wind turbines offshore and installing solar farms wherever it’s feasible. The cost of climate change will dwarf any costs of switching to renewables.

@4:00 John Kasich is making the common mistake of confusing climate/energy issues with environmental pollution. I wish our lawmakers would get this straight. They are both crucially important, but if we ignore climate, and only concentrate on pollution, well, we'll be healthier until the world can't sustain life as we know it, but the world still won't sustain life as we know it. And yes, Republicans used to hold conservation as a precious value, but nowadays all they care about is money, money, money. Lindsay Graham is now saying he believes that climate change is real. Perhaps they finally found a way to make money from mitigation methods. Good, let's get busy.

No mention of hydrogen. Green H2 is the future of mobility and stationary backup power. Hydrogen has an energy density almost three times that of gasoline or diesel. Fuel cell efficiency is 40 to 60% compared to 20% for an internal combustion engine Batteries are too big and heavy to power medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, take long time to charge, and lose power as their state of charge decreases. A hydrogen dispenser can refill a fuel cell vehicle's hydrogen tank in a few minutes, and fuel cell ranges are greater than battery ranges because hydrogen has a higher energy storage density than lithium ion batteries, both in terms of energy stored per unit weight and energy stored per unit volume.

Why does this wonderful man run as a Independent. A lot of Republicans have moved away from the GQP to the independent party.

Nonsense we all know that the Democrats leading right and have for years. And does he think it's constituents vote for him for his beliefs or do they vote for him to get in there after his beliefs and just vote whatever the hell it is that everybody else is voting for? Republicans that care about our environment should fight for change in the party. If the people we vote for just give up on their beliefs and just follow what Trump says when they get there, the Republican party never had a chance.

tax tax tax , take more of r money. that is always the answer to every problem. the gov will never have enough money even if they get it all.

It is our money and the gov spends it on our society.. you have to spend money to make money..we can't treat our own country like a rental property ..we want to live here and let what our parents built fall apart while refusing to upkeep it for our kids. You know who pays no taxes ..poor people in undeveloped countries. It should be like home ownershit not renting ..when the roof leaks and you own the place you need to fix it..Republicans are shitty renters in America

In relation to guns, I think everyone who own a weapon should go for a psychiatric evaluation at least every 2 years in order to keep their permit. I know someone who you can tell the brain doesn't work right, the perception is distorted, the paranoia is clear and own a whole lot of rifles and guns with scopes and all that is need it for war. He was in the navy for a while but was discharged because he want to tell everyone what to do including drill sergeants. He was in the Navy seal training when he got the boot. Still today have the ego of God a lots of weapons.

It's hard to recognize a Republican with an interest in climate-related tidbits. Perhaps he has some concerns. Correction, most Americans want progress, which is not extreme left! Get real!
