Robert Aldrich's brutal Cavalry vs Indians western is a Vietnam allegory that pulls no punches when it comes to violence. However, there seems to be no definitive version, since Aldrich and star Burt Lancaster each prepared different cuts of the film which were released domestically and abroad, and then recut again, often to eliminate horse falls. Various video releases add and drop scenes, dialog and alter the music score.

One of the greatest westerns/movies, along with Hombre, that few people have seen. Neither film is the usual horse opera but a brutal thinking person's film. Perhaps that is why few people enjoy these films. Who wants to think while all you want is to be mindlessly entertained while eating popcorn.

Hombre was a very good film ,it stuck close to the novel by Elmore Lenard , When Richard Boone bullied that Soldier out of His ticket , Boone performance came off menacing and genuine . All the Characters had a back story. I don't have nothing to say about John Landis, nice anyway.

I have never read any of Elmore's stories but his writing for films is outstanding. His characters are not the usual one dimensional characters but shown as actual human beings. My favorite parts in Hombre is when the town sheriff explains to his lover why he emotionally needs to get out of the town, and ,later in the film, when the women complain about the men in their lives. I used to be married, and that conversation sounded reality based. Women will talk about their feelings and encounters more openly than men. That's a fact!

Vincent Fisher If you have to be a "thinking person" to be entertained by a movie, it's more like work to watch a film than it is being entertained. I just want to be entertained, and I get that by watching certain actors, or topics, than anything else. Fortunately, for me, Burt Lancaster made quite a few fantastically entertaining films before he died. If you'd like to be entertained, watch him in "The Professionals", "Valdez is Coming", or "The Train"!

What is so wrong with watching a movie that at least adds more than the usual Hollywood crap. I enjoy mindless entertainment as much as any one else but it's so neat to see a 2 hr. movie to attempt to be more than another popcorn chewing fest. Sorry for offending thee.

Good movie that showed just how brutal both sides were in the Indian Wars; sadly, this movie is almost completely forgotten now.

An underrated film from the early 70s by the great director, Robert Aldrich. Burt Lancaster is excellent in this movie. Ulzana's Raid is almost similar to Fort Apache.

@@kentallard8852 Agreed. The rider knew where the wire was going tight, so he was prepared for the horse to go down and be thrown. If the horse rolls over the thrown rider, well, that could be exciting and that is how some early stunt riders died.

While Ulzana's Raid is certainly a Vietnam parable, that aspect gets flogged too much in a lot of reviews. It is a first-rate Western on the terrors of making war on a culture that views violence and war and death differently then you do. The soldiers and the older scout are people doing their jobs. The Chiracahua Apache portrayed here go beyond racist stereotypes and the depictions of torture and mutilation of captives are not inaccurate. They are just so alien from the majority culture that violence seems the only resolution to their existence. In that sense, it works better as a parable to dealing with the Taliban in Afghanistan then Vietnam. Ultimately, if you insist on pushing the analogy, comparing the Vietnamese to the Chiracahua is a racist insult to the Vietnamese. They are a race of farmers, not warriors, and, whatever horrors the Viet Cong perpetuated during the long wars there, ulitmately, the Vietnamese won out by enduring.

@Evgeniy_Lange.
@Evgeniy_Lange. 2 дня назад

Just watched the Kino bluray of this film. Movie not nearly as great as Landis suggests in this video. Looks like it's made in a hurry and the action is poorly staged. Performances are solid but the photography is just okay. "Valdez is Coming" was a much more interesting movie than this one. "Ulzana" highly overrated. I will have to watch it again and listen to the commentary track. I'm anticipating "Soldier Blue" will be an equally disappointing experience after I purchase it on bluray in July. Someone else mentioned "Hombre" and that was a much, much better movie than "Ulzana's Raid".
