Hey Tony, I absolutely loved this video I watched every second of it. I usually can't stick with videos that are over 30 minutes but this one I absolutely did. I played the 2010 version of mind games today just for the hell of it and I can't wait to get my box set. I agree with you about this album it definitely went under the radar. When I bought this album I was 17 back in 73 and I liked it right off the bat. I was really disappointed with some time in New York City but that sure as hell didn't stop me from buying the next John Lennon album. I'm still a bit confused about these hidden tracks being on the regular CD so I don't know. So anyway watching your video really got me pumped up for this box set. And don't forget Tony (BRING ON THE LUCIE)!😅

I know it was very long, but there was so much to unpack here, it would have been hard to cut it back and still tell everyone about each of the discs. I know the length of it will put some people off watching it. I think finding the hidden tracks on the CDs will depend on what player you have but I couldnt find them on mine, but blu-rays , no problem. Glad you are a fan of the Mind Games album, and I think when you get the box set , you will love it even more. Enjoy it when it arrives my friend

I'm going to talk to a couple people maybe there's a way that somebody could take it off of the Blu-ray and put it on a regular CD for me. But there's plenty of time to figure all that out. @@daytripper9222 I always used to order through Amazon and things always used to arrive on release day. this changed with the Revolver box set when they informed me I would get it 2 days later, and since then I have been ordering directly from the artists web sites which do arrive on release day, but are more expensive because I have to pay shipping. , So you might be lucky and get it next Friday - I hope so

I have had dates like this quoted before and ultimately things have arrived on release date. But Amazon are a bit odd these days in some respects. The high initial price that they persevered with for quite a while put me off an early order and I am sure they lost out on a lot of orders on this set. I did toy with the idea of cancelling and ordering elsewhere and if the trend for high initial pricing and delayed expected delivery dates continues I will look around. Like you, I get free delivery and that does encourage you to stay, but if standards in speed and packaging continue to deteriorate then it is perhaps time to consider alternatives. It is a shame when late deliveries affect your ability to discuss the music with like-minded collectors on sites like your own or other music forums. Thanks again for the updates on this set. It has been a nice encouragement as we all await its arrival. Have a good weekend.
@@davehealey2397 Yes totally agree and that is ultimately what Ive had to do. I dont mind not getting non-Beatles stuff on release date but for Beatles stuff I need to get it on the day. As for the silly inflated prices that Amazon initially post and then reduce closer to release date - I just dont understand that at all

Really appreciate the honesty of your review and the excitement !! I always thought Mind Games was very underrated ? The production was very 73, but too compressed, almost purely for a small radio 📻 listen I love the balance of the album and from what I ve heard the new mix sounds great ! It’s a fragile album, poetic and vulnerable ? It’s still an often played album and will be more so i feel Thanks 🙏

Great comprehensive review Tone! My copy of both the deluxe cd and 2 LP sets arrive early next week, but I couldn’t wait that long so I bought myself a new pair of EarPods so I could listen to the atmos mix in the meantime. Wow. What a revelation! The acoustic guitars on Out the Blue and I Know; the electric guitars on Tight As and Aisumasen; the bass on Out the Blue and Only People; the ad libs on Only People - suddenly this song is FUN and full of life - the vocals on everything!! Mind Games may have just been elevated from my sentimental favourite to my absolute favourite John Lennon album - at least until we get Walls and Bridges 😊 And don’t get me started on the elemental mixes 😳 I am completely blown away and that’s before I hear it on physical media. My excitement for this release has totally been validated. So much so, I’m off to have another listen. Have a great weekend mate, and thanks again for another terrific video.

Another brilliant video thank you Tone:) I must confess that I’m only just now doing a “deep dive” on solo Lennon and McCartney work - despite loving The Beatles for most of my (nearly) 46 years, I’ve made do with compilations for John and Paul until now - largely influenced by watching your channel! 😊 I’ve bought cheap used copies of Imagine, POB and Mind Games - so far I’ve got the original 1987 CDs and the Peter Cobbin remixes. Oh and I was very blessed to get the Lennon Anthology box set at a really good price from a seller on eBay. I remember wanting that when it came out in 1998 but I couldn’t afford it, so I’m really grateful to finally have it:) 🙏 I must admit (and I know very well that most people will disagree with this) I still like the original CDs (as with the Beatles catalog) there’s something nice about those old AAD CDs that’s missing with digital remasters, so as much as I like the Cobbin remixes, I’ll keep the old ones as well; as I have with the Beatles remixes. I’m hoping to pick up the 2CD set for this release too. Having said that, what I’ve heard of this new version of Mind Games, I really like. The packaging, book etc look amazing. I’d really like to buy the 6CD version but now that I’m disabled and unable to work (I’m honestly not complaining or looking for sympathy, just stating a fact) I cannot afford to buy expensive box sets nowadays, unless I manage to get one a few years later second hand, or if Amazon cut the price really low like they did with the Let It Be Super Deluxe last year (I got it with my birthday money for £45!) so I tend to go for the 2CD versions and stream the rest as we’ve got a family package for Amazon Music Unlimited (which sounds great, and you can listen to all the Dolby Atmos mixes via headphones using the phone app - this is great for those streaming-only Beatles Atmos releases like the Rooftop Concert, Revolver etc). I love physical media but you know what they say, “beggars can’t be choosers” right? 😂 I’m just grateful this is on streaming for those of us who can’t afford the big box, and as gorgeous as these books and boxes are, at the end of the day the music is the main thing for me. That said, I think the Lennon estate have been incredibly generous, not only gifting these sets to reviewers such as yourself (and I’ve said before I think it’s great that they’re acknowledging that you guys have not only spent a lot of money buying these records over the years, you’re also helping to promote these releases for them, so you deserve it!) But also keeping the prices pretty sensible. For everything you’ve kindly taken the time to go through, the cost is actually very reasonable. If anyone doesn’t have access to streaming but is looking for a cheaper route to the music, as I write this you can pre-order the Deluxe Edition on Apple Music for £34.99 which is a great price, and while you obviously forsake the nice box etc is a really good option, especially when you consider that the 2CD version is currently £19.99 to pre-order. Not only that, with the Uncut sampler CD, they’re effectively giving those who buy the 2CD version a 3rd disc featuring highlights from the box! This really is incredible, and I can’t think of another artist of John’s stature where they’re doing anything like as generous as this. Obviously I didn’t know John, I was only 2 when he died, but I reckon he’d have approved of them doing this in an age when a lot of artists and labels are charging a lot more for an awful lot less. Kudos to Yoko and Sean for all they’ve done with this release. Oh and thank you again to you for covering this because without your channel I would have missed a lot of brilliant music! ❤️🙏 PS Sorry for such a long comment!

Never feel you have confess or apologise for where you are in your Beatles journey here, my channel is for everyone regardless of how many records people own. In fact im quite envious of those who have still got so much great music to discover !. I also still have the original AAD 1987 CDs, I play them from time to time but I do prefer the more recent remasters and remixes. Im glad that you will be able to stream the entire box set whilst you wait for the price to come down - this is the great thing about streaming. If you go for the 2 CD version you will get the remixed main album and CD 6 the out Takes. I was really surprised to get this very generous gift from the estate , it's the first time for me which was really nice. Thnaks you so much for such a lovely comment, I really appreciate it and glad you are discovering some great stuff through the channel . cheers
Excellent review, Tone! I purposely waited to view this until I’d listened to the box set contents twice. First pass was with the Blu-Rays in Dolby Atmos, second pass was the CDs. Next full listen will be to the Blu-Rays with DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio. Same as with you, I have only been able to hear the hidden bonus tracks on the Blu-Rays. I don’t know anyone who has been able to listen to them (forget about ripping them!) on the CDs. (I have seen online that a few folks have been able to rip the CDs’ hidden tracks using MacOS tools but the first 2-4 seconds of each is not obtainable.) Since it looks like 99% of purchasers cannot access the CDs’ hidden tracks, perhaps it was a pointless exercise? Maybe they should make the bonus tracks available as free downloads? Anyhow, I love the box set! I bought MIND GAMES on vinyl when it was first released and the new remix is eye/ear opening! 😊 Thanks again for such an excellent and thorough review!! Mike

I did has a dilemma about whether or not I should have posted this review before everyone had their copies and in the end decided to because that's what all the music mags do and this is kind of the same just a different medium. But I fully understood that the review would mean more to people once they had the box set to refer to. Im not sure what the deal is with the CDs and the hidden tracks, apparently only some makes of Cd player will reveal the hidden tracks - I know that Sony is is one of them. I havent been keen on the whole concept of hidden tracks , I would rather have them just on an extra CD. Anyway, im glad you are enjoying the box set. cheers Mike

Mind Games has never been one of my favourites mostly due to the mixes, I think. I almost didn’t get the EP on record store day but I am so glad I did as the Outtake #5 of “you are here” has become my favorite John Lennon solo recording (I know that sounds ridiculous but I think it is true, at least right now). I could listen to it on repeat all day long. A beautiful, beautiful, stripped down 10 min version that transcends the album version. I am going to have an absolute Lennon feast when this set finally arrives next week!!! So excited. And much more so having heard what you think about it. But…. I wonder if you ordered the big one yet?

Another excellent review Tone!! I pre-ordered this box set as soon as it was listed on Amazon back in May and it’s supposed to arrive with free shipping on July 15th. To be honest I’m fine with that as I’m gearing myself up for the Stones on July 17th. I’m just immersing myself in all their music at the moment so I’ll be even more psyched for the concert. So unfortunately John will have to wait a while, but of course I’m really look forward to getting it. As you might remember I find it hard to make a favorite ordered list of Lennon albums as it depends on my mood. At a push POB and Imagine come in tied first, and then STINYC, Mind Games, Wall and Bridges, and Rock n Roll are all tied second. I bought all these albums between 1976/1977, so they are all a big part of my teenage formative years. Sorry if I told you all this before and I’m repeating myself, I think it’s an age thing 😕. My favorite stand-out tracks on Mind Games are the title track along with Freda People and Meat City. Tight A$, Out of the Blue and You are Here are also great tracks. All-in all a 10 out 10 album for me along with all his other 70’s studio releases. I don’t see this as a dip or a weak album at all. Lennon continued on his unbroken sequence of excellent albums!! Then again maybe I’m just a biased Lennon fan who can’t be subjective 😁.

Hi Tone This is a very detailed and very in-depth review. You did a hell of a job. The album itself sounds amazing. The songs I like the most are Bring On The Lucie, Aisumasen, Out Of The Blue, and You Are Here. They always were my favorites. For me, it has the best sound of the box sets, released by the Lennon Estate. The one thing I don't like is CD3 with the Elements Mixes. My favorites are CD1, CD2, CD5, and CD6. The Evolution Documentary CD4 is interesting to hear a song grow into the definite version. In general, the box set is worth the money, in my opinion. Take care.

I wondered if this was because the arrangements are a little more complex than the other 2 albums and probably with stronger musicians so there's more scope for sonic beauty. Just a thought. The Elements mixes are a bit tricky without the vocals but I enjoyed trying to sing along and keep in time without any vocals or drums

Hi Patricia Just a couple of minor gripes on the ultimate mix where a couple if things have been removed from the mix - unnecessarily in my opinion. I was also disappointed in the I’m the greatest evolution documentary but otherwise the 6Cd box is excellent. It all depends on how deep your listening experience needs to be . Its an album that has grown in my estimation since hearing the new mix and the rest of the box. If you get the 2cd or 2 Lp versions you will get CD 1 and Cd 6 from the box set/ my review. Hope that helps

1:08:40 - Meat City Single version - the short speeded up backwards voice at the end of the verse when reversed says 'play the album' and when you play that same part on the album reversed it says 'f##K a pig' which was in reference to the photo of John taken in the early 70's holding a pig making fun of Paul's Ram album cover.
All I could run to was the Uncut magazine with the "free" CD, and that probably cost more than twice what I paid for the "music for pleasure" cassette of the album that I bought in Woolworths back in the day! I was dubious about whether it deserved such a lavish boxset, but it all sounds absolutely great. Love the evolution documentaries - I get the impression there's more of John in those than in the rest of the other mixes put together. Above all, it comes across as a beautiful act of love from a son to his father, and I'd definitely invest in it if I could afford it! Thanks for guiding us through it.

I agree that the sax solo should have been kept in One Day At A Time. However, a flat transfer of the improved remixed album should have been included in the package. This method has been successfully done in all the Jethro Tull box set re-releases.
It gives the listener a choice, especially when having to listen to replaced instruments. Imagine replacing McCartneys' solo on Taxman with an earlier George attempt.
@@candelise Yeah I get that but we already have that elsewhere . I think the main point of this box is to hear the album in a different way. Mostly a better way but with a couple of clangers. The original is still there on every other issue of mind games so it hasnt gone away
I wasn't going to be able to buy the box set. 'Mind Games' had never been one of my favourite collections of JL songs, so clearly the Musical Gods were never going to make the pieces move into place. But then this happened: I kept watching you guys talk about all the music, and then I started to listen to MG on Spotify and had the lyrics to hand. It was like John was singing to me. The words are so sweet and tender and I realised I'd never really listened to the songs properly, not properly. And then the Universe shifted and the money is now remarkably available. Talk about positive visualisation, eh?! That's it for now, matey. I don't want to preach to the choir, but I've just come across the interview John did with dear old Whistling Bob Harris and I hadn't seen it since the 1970s on the TV - Tuesday night after the pub! I didnt order the 2CD but Im looking forward getting the 2 LP version next week and will be showing it on the channel. Yes I agree about the autobiography thing, I kind of alluded to that in the video. Its great that you have been improving your 'match fitness' it preparation for the Mind Games marathon you're about to undergo. With your question, do you have your speakers going through an AV amp or are the connected directly to your TV. An AV amp will recognise the format being sent to it from your blu-ray player so will play in 5.1 or dolby atmos. If you dont have a dolby atmos set up (I dont ) your blu-ray player will still play on that setting (the setting is set on the blu-ray by you) but will downgrade to 5.1 which is what I talk about in the video. So you're kind of listening to fake atmos but I still found this sounded better that setting it disc to play in 5.1. Enjoy the box set when it arrives and have a play with the sound settings and see what sounds best to you. Im not sure what happens if you have your speakers plugged directly in to your tv as I have mine going through my AV amp

I only usually buy box sets that are vinyl (just a me thing) and have ordered the double vinyl version of this. But it's not enough and now after looking at the 2 reviews from you I find myself happy to get the cd box as it just looks so good.
It's a real shame that the box set wasnt available on vinyl outside of the Cube as I would have gone for that as well. Ive also ordered the 2 LP version . Thats great that you are also getting the box set now. Enjoy it when it arrives Peter - I feel confident that you will
So, I looked into this only because of the "All hidden tracks revealed..." title... I fastforwarded around the 1h mark, only to find out he wasn't able to access those tracks on CD! Some revelation eh? Thank god I didn't sit through the hole thing! 😊
Well if you'd have watched it properly you would have come to the part where I clearly demostrate how to find the hidden tracks on blu-ray, you plank !

Nice review. Would it be ok to listen on a walkman with headphones? I have different versions of CD players. I have been listening to Mind games in my car. I also have stereo speakers too, that can play CD or vynl.
Im sure it will be Ok James but probably wont sound as good as playing through a Cd player attached to you hi fi . Give it a go and see what you think. As I said before, sound quality is subjective as we have different ears and devices , so whatever sounds best to your ears is the best way
i'm a little confused. On disc one on the regular album on the CD, not the blu ray, after meat city there's about 80 tracks of silence. Are those hidden tracks as well? How do you get to them?
Hi Brian, I mention this in the video, there are 78 tracks of 24 seconds of silence. I have no idea why but maybe this will be revealed at a later date but it's certainly very strange
I had the cassette (the budget Capitol reissue), and enjoyed the MG album. I wish there was just a single lp version as well, as I don’t need the bonus tracks or Blu-Ray.
Hi Tony. Have you managed to find the the videos of Make love not War and the promotional video with the spoof of the Queen on the Blu Ray. If you have can you please tell me how to access them please. Easy to find the songs. On the cd 2 and 3 drives my cd player a bit nuts to play the hidden tracks. In my older player they will not even play. But appreciate it if you have found the Easter egg videos. Cheers Tony.

Hi Tony. The promo ad appears after the third play of the mind games promo video played continuously. I think you need a blu- ray drive on a computer to access the Tony Cox Make love not war video. @@beatleytonesbeatleschannel

I will probably give the physical version of the album a miss. The reason being as you mentioned that when things have been removed. In my opinion is give the main album a better soundscape, but leave everything else alone. John intended all the instruments to be there, so leave it alone. ! If they want to experiment keep it on a separate disc !
Although I find it a strange decision to edit the ending of Aisumsen and remove the sax from One Day (at A Time), I would not consider these deal breakers and the benefits of the remix far out way my two minor quibbles
No idea but i noticed this too and mentioned it on my review video of the CD box set. 12 normal tracks and 78 tracks of 24 seconds of silence. I thought maybe this is one of sean’s games that gets says will unravel later but i cant imagine what it can be. Weird though
@@beatleytonesbeatleschannel - thanks - just working my way through the set. They seem very slow at ripping to iTunes. and iTunes often would not see Disc 2 at all. Had to shut the laptop down and restart. Just wondering if it’s the hidden tracks that it dies t like. But at least I managed to see the hidden track on disc 2 although could not import it into iTunes but managed to listen to the 9 minute song You Are Here and record it and then drop it in to iTunes. All a bit of a faff though.
@@emjel-yi9eg That does sound like a faff. I didnt have any issues ripping the CDs to my Mac using the Apple Music (what used to be called iTunes )App but couldn't see the hidden tracks doing it that way. Are you using the old iTunes app, maybe that is the reason for slowness in ripping or not recognising the CDs
@@beatleytonesbeatleschannel - no all up to date with software etc. what was interesting is that the CD that did not have a hidden track on it, zoomed through at usual ripping speed, so maybe it iTunes was trying to do something with the hidden track. But anyhow, I did manage to get all 5 which I have added to iTunes and now it’s a 7th disc in the set albeit with only r tracks. I have to say that I think the sound on the first disc is really great (haven’t got around to listening to the others yet) and the only track i still do not like on the album is the final track Meat City. I often think that the lyrics in places are a bit questionable and that he could have done with McCartney’s help (and vice versa on McCartney’s albums) which is what they did in the glory days of The Beatles. I see the album is a NEW entry at #10 in the mid week album chart so must have shifted several thousand copies.

With regard to your attention span, that is your issue. Get a comic book and read that then. Tone went to all this trouble to produce this brilliant and comprehensive review of the box set, and you can’t appreciate it because of your limited attention span. Get off the cell phone, get off the social media., and try reading a book. Yes, a book! Remember those things??
Hi Tone I bought this album around 1981 on the MFP label for £1.99 about £9 today so this puts me off buying the boxset 😅! and I always thought it one of his weakest albums. I'll stick to my gimme some truth 3cd boxset
