This makes me so sad that John was killed just when he was finally happy and content in his life. He was getting his creative juices flowing again and writing lots of music. He also had plans to go back to England with his son Sean to be with his family in England again and bond more with his oldest son, Julian. I hate that all of that was taken away from him because of 5 bullets.

To be listen to his excitement I can imagine in my mind, the sound, his voice, the joy that I should bring with me to this day. It’s like I actually really experienced it. I remember when seeing Bob Marley. The place was packed. The haze was all over the place. The security gave in. I went to the stage. 6 meter apart was Marley and the Wailers. He was swaying and dancing and playing. The sound. The smoke. What a happening! That’s what I transcribe into my mind for a concert with Lennon, but heavier. So sad. We lost a true Hero. Just for one day...
@TheJpgr1958
@TheJpgr1958 7 лет назад
What a wonderful concert that would have been !!! Can you imagine seeing John performing "I Am The Walrus," or "Strawberry Fields Forever" live??? But when this interview came out many many years ago, I always would wonder what his opening song would have been? I thought it would have been incredible if he opened with "Twist and Shout," but then he more than likely would've opened with "Starting Over," albeit, it's mere speculation on my part. But let's say he would've opened the show with "Starting Over." Picture the scenario....you're at the concert waiting for it to start, the lights go dim, the crowd goes wild, and then you hear those 4 bell sounds that is the beginning to "Starting Over." As his voice sings the lyrics "Our life, is so special" etc., the stage is still dark. But when he begins to sing the lyrics "It's been too long since we took the time," the stage lights up and there is John standing at the mic in his famous pose, playing his old Rickenbacker guitar he played when The Beatles first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show!!! Again, I know this is all pure speculation, but what a sight that would have been. Sigh.

@TheJpgr1958 7 лет назад
Hi tex moore. Thanks for the response. Although I stated quite clearly that the scenario I presented was pure speculation, I would have to disagree with you when you stated that it wouldn't have been that great. To have seen John in concert, and I speak for myself, would have been absolutely amazing for me. Now as to how he would have sounded..... His voice on "Double Fantasy" was very clean and crisp, he sounded very confidante in himself and how he's life was going at the time. So with that in mind, I believe that he would've sang well. But again, this is pure speculation on my part. As to him not doing any Beatles songs....again I would probably have to disagree. I think members of his band at the time would've talked him into doing "I Am The Walrus," or "Strawberry Fields Forever," as well as the promotors of the tour would've asked him if he would "sling" a couple of Beatles tunes into the setlist. The anger he felt towards the whole myth of The Beatles seemed to have subsided a lot which leads me to think he was more open to his past. But alas, we will never know. As to having Yoko on the same stage, well that would've been a given. I'm not a fan of her music, nor her singing, but the one song that I will admit she sings rather well is the tune "Born In A Prison" from the album "Somewhere In New York City." She doesn't screech in that one, and the lyrics are rather good, especially the lines "Wood becomes a flute when It's loved," as well as "A mirror becomes a razor when its broken." So if that song was in the set list, I would have enjoyed it. But again, all of this is pure speculation on my part.

I Loved and Love John Lennon, He was my favorite Beatle, He was the Beatles engine and pioneer of change. But sudden death puts us in a much higher place in the world. I’m not sure Johns tour would have been amazing? Yoko would have definitley sung half the songs. And Johns concerts we’re always rough around the edges. Aside from that it would’ve still been fantastic to just see him and listen. The only thing I can say is although I’m a John fan. Pauls concerts were perfection. I saw the 70”s wings concerts in philly and the Garden. But the concert in 1990. I literally felt my soul leaving my body like a spiritual Awakening. So I give Paul credit he’s a people pleaser! So for adding so many Beatle songs, He never would’ve done that many if John was alive. Anyway it still would have been great but we will never know? Luv you John!

Elsewhere in the same series of interviews he speaks very positively about Bruce Springsteen, taking quite an interest in whether he could handle fame, etc etc. Supposedly he really liked the sound of "Hungry Heart," a big hit in summer 80. Both were working very extensively with engineer Jimmy Iovine at The Record Plant in NYC. It's very easy to imagine John checking out the E Street Band on Iovine's recommendation, and once Bruce hears John Lennon is in the house, well ...

Lennon said a lot of stuff he didn't mean and backtracked on things he said. He admitted that himself in quite a few interviews. People seem to forget he was human, just like the rest of us - he could change his mind and things he said shouldn't be taken as gospel. He performed an old Beatles song with Elton John in 74' - in that sense, he was already doing what he said he'd never do. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aGkqm2MkyF8.html

“I was at a dance club one night in Bermuda” in June 1980. “Upstairs, they were playing disco, and downstairs, I suddenly heard ‘Rock Lobster’ by the B-52’s for the first time. Do you know it? It sounds just like Yoko’s music, so I said to meself, ‘It’s time to get out the old axe and wake the wife up!’ We wrote about twenty-five songs during those three weeks, and we’ve recorded enough for another album.” - John Lennon (as described by Brian Scott MacKenzie, 2017) He was a big fan of Cheap Trick as well. Rick Neilson and Bun E. Carlos played on a session along with Tony Levin of King Crimson, which yielded a much higher-energy version of I'm Losing You than what ultimately was recorded by other session musicians for the album. A version of Yoko's I'm moving On was also recorded. The session had to be cut short because Cheap Trick were leaving for a tour in Japan. I think it's a more than a little tragic that he died just as he was getting inspired by music again. I think that had he lived, and had toured in 81 with Cheap Trick, we would have heard some very interesting stuff. I'd like to think that some Scary Monsters era Bowie might have rubbed off on him, that the Remain In Light era of Talking Heads might have become an influence, perhaps some of the more accessible punk like Generation X or The Damned, as well as some of the darker Cheap Trick stuff like Gonna Raise Hell. I'd like to think that a record or series of records might have been recorded that would recall if not stylistically, at least the bile and energy that The Plastic Ono Band could muster. Can you imagine him working with Robert Quine, Ivan Julian, Lenny Kaye, or Richard Lloyd? Working with some different producers would have been interesting too, people like Ed Stasium would have known best how to harness that energy.

What Lennon missed out on was being able to, like Dylan, Young or Simon, go onstage with an acoustic guitar and lay it out... or play his songs solo and get the real buzz of performance Being a Beatle precluded him from that and he never developed those chops...
@Mayersam
@Mayersam 5 лет назад
i understand what you are saying but i wont say he never developed chops for it. I mean he fronted dirty mac on that one white album song wonderfully, even if we say he only felt confident on stage with the beatles. We have to understand he was an artist, and he during his time as a beatle and as a solo act never did anything that he did not feel was right for him! may be it was always on his mind and was waiting for the right moment. But what a wonderful thought, john lennon doing a small gig, with his acoustic guitar, piano and harmonica..playing some old and new songs and chatting away with the audience.

I read that John didn't want the Double Fantasy layout of every other song being Yoko's; he wanted one side John's songs and the other Yoko's. Double Fantasy was not as good as he thought it was. It bombed the charts everywhere. The music world had moved on by 1980 and no one really cared about the John and Yoko thing anymore, and I think John underestimated that. The album had three, maybe four worthwhile songs, total. The rest was forgettable, especially considering the quality of music other artists were putting out at that time. It was only after he was shot that the critics felt bad and sentimentally reevaluated the album.

@Velvet0Starship2013
@Velvet0Starship2013 6 лет назад
"Why this hate towards the Beatles?" Not "hate" ... and not just one simple explanation for both John and George's attacks. John had made very powerful enemies in the 1960s and 1970s and he was a rejuvenated threat in 1980. The Rolling Stones were always well under control (Mick and Keef hobnobbing with the Toffs). Half of CSNY were reactionary gun-nuts, so, no problem there. Dylan got his warning (Farina's motorcycle death, then Dylan's own close call) and he was very careful after that, sticking to abstractions, or local cases a la "Hurricane". But Lennon was unpredictable and not playing it safe and ready to re-assert himself, in 1980. The hit is obvious from the symmetry in the details of the Allard K. Lowenstein assassination: AKL was a left-wing politician, and former thorn in LBJ's side, who was killed by "an obsessed fan," in NYC, six months before Lennon was. A dry run to see if anyone would buy it? They did, largely. In the wake of Lennon's assassination, Bowie got the message, too, and backed away from lucidly political material after Scary Monsters. George, I think, was just the victim of a crazed stalker, since nothing about that failed attempt on his life seemed professional. There's usually a patsy to take the blame while a professional hit man (or a team) gets the job done; for notable patsies see: LHO, Sirhan Sirhan, James Earl Ray and the Hinckley kid. It's usually the same method because that method works... but only because people are too distracted/ lazy/ stupid/ gullible and/or full of pharmaceutical poisons to notice. _Here: have some more Kardashians and shut-up..._ PS That "Paul is Dead" meme is demonstrable horseshit. Sure: Saddam Hussein had body doubles, for example... but they weren't all expected to be able to sing well, play bass left-handed, write mega-hits with signature-type melodies and arrangements while fooling decades' worth of intimately acquainted friends and relatives. If it were possible to replace a talented (or even untalented) pop star with a convincing double, Queen would have its Faux Freddy and INXS would have toured, successfully, for decades after Hutchence's death. File "Faul" in the same clown-colored trash bin as "Flat Earth" and "Shape-Shifters". All of which is carefully-crafted nonsense to discredit anyone with a brain and some serious questions.

It’s sad how obsessed he was with competing with Paul or putting Paul down, even at that point. On the other hand, he was talking with Paul about getting together with him and Ringo on Ringo’s new album - according to interviews Paul’s given. I think John was very much about styling his answers for Yoko when he was with her, but differently when he talked to Paul. John even said himself that he tended to answer questions however he felt at the moment, and to answer the same question differently at other times. I don’t think he was trustworthy, in that respect. For whatever reason.
