John Locke is often regarded as one of the fathers of liberal democracy. In his state of nature, people are born with a Tabula Rasa, or blank slate. Because of this, his social contract considers the importance of governments existing to protect people's inalienable rights of life, liberty, and property.

John Locke, his 'Two Treatises of Government' inspired the writing of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 1789 and the other declarations of Human Rights of the time. The words of these statements are borrowed of the 'Two Treatises of Government.'

I'm curious. Where does John Locke mention the phrase 'tabula rasa' or 'blank slate'?

@@bradkeen1973 §2 Chapter 1 of Book 2 of "An Essay Concerning Human Understanding" "Let us then suppose the mind to have no ideas in it, to be like white paper with nothing written on it. How then does it come to be written on? From where does it get that vast store which the busy and boundless imagination of man has painted on it - all the materials of reason and knowledge? To this I answer, in one word, from experience. Our understandings derive all the materials of thinking from observations that we make of üexternal objects that can be perceived through the senses, and of üthe internal operations of our minds, which we perceive by looking in at ourselves. These two are the fountains of knowledge, from which arise all the ideas we have or can naturally have."

As an aspiring musician and painter, I always preferred to not take lessons or have others instruct me. I believe it would skew my personal "sound" or "image" I was going for. Basically, if someone else teaches me their method or style, I'll wind up making that persons art instead of my own. I believe tabula rasa validates those feelings I have.

This might be late, but don't worry about learning from others it'll help you appreciate art/music in a different way possibly way different than your own and thats why art and music is fun because of the endless possibilities, you always want to better yourself one way or the other. Learning someone's style doesn't mean you'll lose your self/uniqueness because at the end of the day even if you base your style on someone else's you'll eventually put your own spin on it, because we humans always strive for our own perfection consciously or unconsciously.
