The top player averages might be higher now but I still think Lowe has the best-looking throwing style ever. His darts thud into the board dead straight very satisfyingly.
The smoothest, calmest, BEST ever 9 darter we will ever see. Why, because it was the first-ever televised one, & i watched it .John Lowe wrote the 1st chapter of the darting world book..
When you consider the diameter of John’s darts coupled with how thick the wires on the spider were, this is statistically not only the first but the best 9 darter ever done I would’ve thought?and a nice chunk of change for the era aswell.
Lots of comments about his throw but what stands out to me is because this was not yet a well trodden path T17 T18 D18 is a unique way to complete a nine darter. I am sure some bright spark will find an identical route I have not considered but the 141 path now is very often T20 T19 D12.
The youth of today should watch this and not look at the scores but look at Lowe. Watch his throw. His arm raised at the same speed , to the exact eye level and the exact same time of release, perfection.
I was there . This took place at the Thames hall, Fulcrum centre Slough where i was working. I doubt i will ever forget the sound the crowd made when it happened.
Darts wasn't live back then, apart from perhaps the world championship final. This was put into a convenient timeslot during World Of Sport, some time between the racing and wrestling, and introduced by Dickie Davies with the words "we now go to the second leg of the fourth set, and there's no score (only Dickie Davies wold have introduced darts with such a stupid remark. ITV also had snooker's first televised 147 (Steve Davis Lada Classic 1982), but that was also recorded.
the funny thing is..thats the orthidox finish, before we knew what we know now...of course some of us still go the same way..but most of us go 60 first bc we see so many 9ers being hit with 60 first..but for u beginners watchin this for the first time..Do Your Thing!!..unless its the math concept your learning...other than that..just relax, try with every dart..and the results will come:)
It must have irritated the hell out of the BBC that, two years after ITV got snooker's first televised 147 (Steve Davis), they get there first with the 9 darter, despite BBC's huge coverage of the World Championships. In both cases, the BBC eventually got the first 147 and 9 darter in the world championships. I'm a bit surprised that ITV haven't rubbed BBC's noses in this. In fact, I've been in a quiz where they gave the wrong answer to the snooker one (they said Cliff Thorburn).
Listen to how quiet the crowd is (whilst they're throwing).......These days it sounds like they're having a party whilst a brass band marches around the gaff!
they guy who beat oshea is a dam good player i watch his match against hankey that was edge of the seat stuff do you reckon he will beat adams i think he will
There were far less established patterns of play back then. Lots of times, they played whatever was in front of them. If your favoured double was 19s, you went for that. Nowadays, that's considered risky and most would only go for it if they had to.
+GoteeDevotee , my main sport is road cycling and I recently got into darts. Before trying the darts game I thought the same as you do (some fat drunks in bars throwing darts at the wall), but it is a sport that requires your entire body to be perfectly controlled and you also need good math skills. It's a nice sport overall.
Agreed. I've played a lot of sport in my time, a few to a decently high level and I have to say, darts (snooker comes a close 2nd) is, by a distance, the hardest to get really good at, and I'm including golf in that.
